Chapter 23: Could She Handle It

She wished they could end the conversation already, but her hope was far-fetched, the real discussion had just started. Because even after they all finished eating, they kept on talking and would ask her some questions in between.

She also learned that the whole family first resided here in Country Z, and her grandfather’s two brothers moved to Country V where they set up their own families.

Cedric had also studied at the same school her brothers had studied at abroad. And if she had studied there, they would have long met before now. Even though he was a few years ahead of her.

They’d also said that they would take her back to Country V with them after the engagement.

“You’ll stay for a few days and get to know other members of the family,” Cedric’s mother said.

“And you shall get to take a tour of the companies,” Said Cedric’s father. “That way, you’ll get to make acquaintance with the board directors.”

That night, Lucy tossed and turned on the bed thinking of their conversations. How would she be able to assist him in the companies matters? She didn’t even study business or anything related to that area, they very well knew that. And would she be able to be a stay-at-home wife?

It was as if they had already planned how her married life was going to be.

The Next Day.

The enormous skyscraper that stood in the city’s center glowed with lights. Various decorations hung from each balcony of the hotel. Securities lined up in front of the huge glass door. And other guards paraded outside the gates which were ajar.

A wide range of cars streamed into the hotel. And inside, was the large hall which dazzled with so many decorations.

The round tables spread across the hall were decorated with white clothes. And several chairs, already occupied by guests, circled around the tables.

A tall orchid of white and pink roses stood at all corners of the room and many more flowers were spread in the center of the hall, making a large circle.

Waiters walked around, dressed neatly in their uniforms, taking trays of drinks from the long desk which was spread with many kinds of food and desserts, and distributing them to the guests.

Upstairs, in the dressing room.

Lucy sat in front of the mirror as the makeup artists applied the final touch to her makeup. Her long black hair was packed in a messy bun, decorated with crystal hairpins that twinkled and glowed. And several strands of hair hung down the sides of her face.

“So pretty.” One of the artists commented with a giggle after they were done and Lucy smiled.

Staring back at herself in the mirror, she really did look pretty.

Gina who had also got her makeup done helped her out of the chair as the makeup artists packed their things and left.

“Lucy, you’re going to break hearts tonight.” Gina sized her up in disbelief.

“I know right.” Lucy giggled.

The silver dress she wore was decorated with stones that glittered against the light. The dress hugged her figure across the bodice and flowed down to the floor, trailing a stream of sparkling crystals.

The door opened and her mother walked in. The middle-aged woman teared up at the sight of her and she held her hand. “You look so beautiful,” she said excitedly.

Lucy chuckled and lowered her head. It wasn’t like she was getting married. However, her mother would burst into sobs at any happy occasion.

“Here, let me put this on you.” Her mother took out some jewelry from her bag then put the dangling earrings on her ears and wore the necklace around her neck, then gave her some bangles to wear. “Tonight’s going to be perfect.”

The woman sighed happily as she made Lucy watch herself in the mirror.

“Argh, Lucy… I can’t take this anymore,” Gina whined and pouted. “I better get going before I lose all of my self-esteem.” She quickly bid them goodbye and left.

Her mother chuckled and released her. “Everyone has arrived, come down soon. Go get Cedric, he’s in the next room.”

Lucy nodded and her mother also left. She gave a last look at herself in the mirror and took in a deep breath.

After calming her erratic beating heart, she sauntered out of the room, her heels clinking against the tiled floor, and a tall figure in a dark gray suit appeared in front of her.

“Brother Cedric.” Lucy gave him a timid smile before looking down.

“Very stunning,” he whispered and lifted her head. “Your beauty is blinding, My Love.”

His eyes held hers in a soft gaze and he slipped an arm around her. “Let’s go.”

He took her to the elevator with his hand on her lower back and her heart pounding rapidly.
