The President's Daring Wife
Chapter 14: Other Men Won’t Be Competent Enough
Chapter 16
As expected, Ethan headed straight to the study room. Eve didn’t go after him this time. She went straight to her own room and entered the closet. She picked up every cloth on the racks and folded them before dropping them into her luggage.
Several minutes went by while she emptied the closet. When she was done, she came out to the living room and packed all the cosmetics and perfume from the vanity table into a box.
She entered the bathroom and packed all her toiletries.
“Madam.” Elena entered the room and her expression paled. “M–Madam, what is happening? Why are you packing?”
Eve straightened up and placed both hands on her waist, panting heavily.
“A–Answer me, Madam. Please don’t pack and go away. If you and Young Master have a little misunderstanding, you should try and sort things out. Marriage is not a bed of roses, it will break his grandfather’s heart if you separate.”
Eve flicked off the sweat on her forehead, struggling to catch her breath. “Help me, Elena. Also, get the maids.”
“Madam–”
“I’m moving to Ethan’s room.” And she should have thought of getting the Stewardess and other servants’ attention before she started packing. Now her waist ached like hell.
“Oh, Goodness. The Young Master’s bedroom?” The Stewardess’s expression brightened.
“Yeah.” Eve nodded and picked up a box. “Please get them fast, Elena. I’m so tired.”
“That’s great!” Elena clapped her hands, smiling. “Leave it to me, Madam. I’ve come to call you down for lunch. Go ahead and eat, I’ll take care of the packing.”
“Thank you, Elena.” Eve breathed out heavily and staggered out of the room.
At the dining table, she gobbled down a lot of food. Ethan didn’t come down. He must still be in his study room. The Stewardess must have served him his food, no need for her to bother if he’d eaten or not.
By the time Eve finished eating, the Stewardess appeared in the dining area. “We are done packing, Madam. If you need anything else, please tell me.”
“That will be all, thank you, Elena.” Eve stood up and left for the stairs. She didn’t need anything more, but she needed to wash up.
She sweated too much that the fabrics of her dress clung to her body as if she was dipped into a swimming pool.
When she reached the bedroom, Eve wiggled out of the dress and tossed it in the basket before stepping into the bathroom. A warm bath was all that she needed, as today’s drama had taken a huge toll on her nerves.
Eve stepped out of the bathroom, yawning. Damn! Her shoulders still ached as if she was the one beaten with the golf club.
The bathrobe extended down below her knees, and without caring to remove it or dry her hair, she slumped on the bed and dozed off.
“Eve. Eve. Evelyn!”
She could feel rapid taps on her shoulder.
“Evelyn, what are you doing here?” Ethan shook her.
Eve’s eyelids weighed like mountains and she fought to open her eyes. “Urgh! What is it?”
“What are you doing in my room?” He asked.
“Urgh!” Eve groaned out loud and forced herself to sit up while rubbing the sleep off her eyes.
“Is it morning already?”
“No, it is the middle of the night… And you missed dinner.” She barely heard his last words as he said them hesitantly. “What are you doing in my room, Eve?”
Eve stifled a yawn and covered her mouth. “What kind of question is that? What do you mean by What am I doing in your room?”
“Eve–”
“I’ve moved in here. That’s the answer.” The sleep was no longer in her eyes and she could clearly see his feature in the dimly lit room.
Outside the glass windows, the moonlight shone brightly, casting down its glow in the room.
The fresh scent of soap mixed with a cologne filled the atmosphere around her. And tiny drops of water dribbled from his hair and trickled down the side of his face.
“Ethan…” Eve shifted close to him and held the sleeve of his pajama shirt. “What happened earlier wasn’t my fault, I promise. I swear I didn’t know that Cole was going to come.”
Ethan remained silent, so she went on. “Cole was here under the pretense of giving me back the purse I forgot at the antique store, but his real intention was to hurt me. We weren’t being intimate, and if you hadn’t arrived on time, he would have crushed me to death.”
“How do I know you’re not lying to me?”
“From now on, I’ll never see him or speak about him. He doesn’t love me anyways, he did all that to help Mia destroy my life.”
“You know my history with Mia, Ethan… It turned out she bears a deep grudge against me. If I haven’t realized the truth, she would have successfully gotten her wish.”
Silence descended, and Ethan gazed into her eyes through the darkness.
“When did you find out?”
Eve lowered her head, chewing her bottom lip. “Erm… Well, After reading Mia for a long time, I came to the conclusion that she might be a manipulative person. So I decided not to associate with her anymore.”
“Do you believe me now, Ethan? I promise I won’t cause you any more trouble, and I’ll no longer request a divorce.”
“I don’t believe you.” Ethan shook his head.
“Come on.” Eve tugged at his sleeve and whined. “Must I have any other reason for wanting to stay with you?”
“Yes.” Ethan didn’t bat an eye.
“Okay.” Eve took in a deep breath and said. “It’s like this… Ethan, after finding out a few days ago that you’re so good in bed, I became afraid that if I leave you, all the other men out there will not be competent enough. Now will you save my poor pride from shrinking and keep me with you forever?” She batted her lashes.
“If you say no, it means you agree that other men out there are better than you.”
“What if I said yes?”
“It means you believe that I’m telling the truth and you’ll give me a chance to prove my loyalty. From now on, we’ll be like a normal couple.”
“Evelyn–”
“How about we sign an agreement?” Eve jerked up and moved closer to him. “Let’s draw a contract and sign it. I, Evelyn Maxwell, promise my husband, Ethan Anderson, that I will never ask for a divorce. Any attempt to do that will bring me consequences, and I’ll have to answer to the court of law. Your lawyer shall be our witness. I’ll spend many years in jail as punishment.”
