The President's Daring Wife
Chapter 35: Take Up The Position As His Secretary
Chapter 37
Gasps spread across the area and the employees left their cubicles. Jessie’s expression fell and her lips parted. While Ethan looked at Eve as if she had grown two heads.
“Mrs. Anderson.” Jessie glanced at Ethan before staring Eve down. And she sounded confident when she said, “Mr. Anderson is my witness. Nothing is going on between us. We have made this clear the previous time, Mrs. Anderson, and you promised not to bother me anymore.”
“What is your problem, Evelyn?” Ethan flashed her a look of annoyance.
“Mrs. Anderson.” Jessie lifted her chin. “I beg you to please be lenient on me. I know you’re not comfortable with me working with your husband, but I must let you know that I have been working with Mr. Anderson for many years. And in those years, I’ve been nothing but diligent and professional.”
The employees gathered around and murmured, but Ethan’s glare at them made them run back into their cubicles.
“You’re thinking too far, Jessie.” Eve smiled and dropped her hands. Stepping forward, she stood beside Ethan and gently held his arm. “It is not that I’m being insecure about you working with my husband. And of course, I admire your diligence and professionalism.”
She emphasized the word ‘Professionalism.’
“But you’ve been working beside my husband for many years. You’ve been working hard, in fact. Am I wrong, Honey?” She lifted her head and stared into Ethan’s eyes.
“That is why I ask him to relieve you of your position, because it is not fair,” Eve continued.
“What isn’t fair, Eve?” Ethan asked and Jessie gave her a questioning look.
“Keeping her by your side for all these years is not fair, Honey.” Eve gave him a sweet smile. “Jessie seems like an ambitious person, you shouldn’t just restrict her as your secretary. Send her to other departments, let her explore and gain more experience.”
“Y–You.” Jessie’s expression paled.
“It isn’t like you’re going to decrease her salary, Ethan.” Eve ignored the girl and intertwined her fingers with his. “And come on, Honey.” She tugged at his arm. “Look at me. I’m your wife, and I’m jobless. What do you think other people will think of me? Even though you’re well off, I can’t rely on your money all the time.”
“What are you driving at?”
“I’m not asking you to fire her, I just want you to transfer her somewhere else. And I’ll gladly take up the position as your secretary, my dear husband. Now, isn’t it all balanced?”
“Ah!” Jessie trotted forward on her heels and exclaimed. “I’m not complaining about being your secretary, Sir. Please don’t relieve me of this position. I’m working hard and I promise you I’ll work harder. Sir, please don’t make this decision.”
“Awwn, Jessie.” Eve gave her a sympathetic look. “You need the relief, I promise you. And as the president’s wife, when I’m his secretary, I’ll tend very well to every one of his needs, even those you’re not capable of. Or are you looking down on me, Jessie?”
“No, Mrs. Anderson, please don’t misunderstand.” Jessie shook her head and looked toward Ethan. “But, Sir. Please reconsider.”
“This is for your own good, Jessie. Or do you want people to look down on your Boss for not letting his wife work? Tell me, Ethan. What position suits me best in this company apart from being your secretary?”
“Mrs. Anderson–”
Eve held up her hand before Jessie could speak further. “Honey, I’m listening. What do you think about my proposition?”
“You really want to work?” Ethan asked.
“Uhuh.” Eve nodded and caught her lower lip between her teeth, blinking Innocently. “I don’t want to be a lazy wife, Honey.” She straightened up and kissed the side of his lips, inciting a gasp from Jessie. “So, what do you think?”
“As you wish,” Ethan said before looking toward Jessie. “From now on, you will manage the finance department, Jessie. Do a good job.”
“Ah!” Jessie squeaked and fell to her knees. “Sir, please please don’t. I’m not complaining, I still want to be your secretary. Please don’t send me out.”
“My wife needs the position,” Ethan said flatly.
“Oh my, oh my, the finance department!?” Eve held her cheeks and exclaimed. “Aren’t you so generous, my dear husband? I hear they handle all the money in the company there. And as the manager– Oh, God. Congratulations, Jessie. Even I am jealous.”
This time, the employees all left their cubicles and they watched in astonishment.
“Everyone, Jessie here has just been promoted to a higher position,” Eve called out. “From now on, she will be the manager of the finance department. Isn’t that something to marvel upon?”
“The president is very generous.”
“You are very lucky, Jessie.”
“Oh, God. Imagine the payment.”
“I bet the salary is on par with what she gets as the president’s secretary.”
The employees praised and clapped.
“M–Mr. Anderson.” Jessie’s lips trembled. “P–Please don’t.”
“You’re dismissed.” Ethan looked down at her. “Go to the HR department and begin handling your transfer.”
After saying that, he turned around and entered his office. The employees continued praising as they walked back to their cubicles.
“Jessie, Jessie, Jessie.” Eve stepped forward and snatched the documents in her hands. “Be lucky that I’m being lenient on you. I only showed you mercy because of your years of hard work. So don’t cause any trouble for yourself, and leave very quietly. If you try any nonsense again, believe me, I won’t be merciful twice.”
She straightened up and hugged the document against her chest, smiling sweetly. “Have a great time at the finance department, Jessica. While I have a great time taking care of my husband full-time.”
Eve waved the sobbing girl goodbye before skipping into Ethan’s office.
“Honey.” She met Ethan sitting behind his working desk and she dropped the document in front of him. “Weren’t you going on a business date with a client?”
Ethan rubbed his forehead, shutting his eyes. Then he opened them and glared at her. “You just made me lose my secretary. Eve, are you sure you can do this job?”
“You should be the last person to underestimate me, Ethan. I’ve been a straight-A student right from kindergarten. Do you think I’m a dumb person or what?” Eve folded her hands and put on an offended look.
“That’s what you seem to be.”
“Argh! Ethan.” Eve strode forward and glowered. “Is your tongue made of a knife or what? Why can’t you say something sweet at least once?”
“Why did you go to the hospital alone?”
Eve quickly changed her demeanor when he said that. Seemed like he was still mad at her.
“I was so worried that something is wrong, Ethan.” She lowered herself onto his lap and played with his necktie. “I couldn’t sit still. But now that the doctor has reassured me, my mind is very at ease.”
“Stand up.”
Eve ignored his command and went on. “She even prescribed me drugs that I should take. See…” She pointed toward the couch where she had dropped the bags. “I also bought some nutritious food to make me more healthy. I don’t mind sharing them with you.”
“Stand up, Eve.” Ethan gave her a hard look. “If you want to be my secretary, you must act as one. Stop being childish in my workplace.”
“That’s not fair.” Eve pulled at his necktie. “Aren’t I your wife? And sitting on you is not being childish. It is being romantic.”
“Get up.” Ethan brought his hands down to push her away, but his palms touched her knees and she winced.
“What is this?” His eyes went to her knees and he lifted her dress.
“Evelyn!” Ethan growled. “How did you sustain this injury!?”
