Chapter 17 Too Bizzare

Violet's ears must be tricking her.

Was that really her daughter's voice?

Apart from Mimi, there wasn't any other kid on this Island.

Mimi!

Violet staggered in relief, holding the window's frame for support.

How could she have mistaken?

That was Mimi's voice.

“You’re an adorable kid…” Came the male's voice. “Of course, I like you… But I'm not your Daddy.”

Clyde!

Violet's heart sank, her hope plummeting.

No way!

It mustn't be Clyde who saved her daughter, right?

No- it couldn't be.

Although relieved that her baby was safe and sound, this realization awoke Violet's anxiety.

She didn't even have time to celebrate, despite the happy tears rolling down her cheeks.

What if Mimi kept on pestering Clyde that he was her father?

What if her baby's determination drove Clyde to investigate?

What if he discovered the truth?

“W-Why… Why, Daddy!?”

Mimi's sobs brought Violet back to the present.

“You keep pushing me away. Liar! You don't like me! Did I do anything wrong? Bad Daddy!”

Mimi's rapid sobs and hiccups pained Violet's heart.

Why was Mimi so convinced Clyde was her father?

Neither could she understand nature or how the human brain worked.

Did Mimi feel the same connection too?

Violet thought the strong bond was only between her and her daughter.

Why didn't Clyde feel that connection?

“It's okay, don't cry.” Clyde's deep voice was reduced to a soft murmur. “Do you want to return to the hospital?”

Hearing that, Violet frowned.

What hospital was he speaking about?

Did he take Mimi outside the Island?

If it had been the Island's clinic, they'd long find the girl.

Now it all made sense.

“I'm not a kid, Daddy.” Came Mimi’s voice, grumbling and sarcastic. “Even if my asthma starts again, I'll use this tube the doctor gifted me. Want me to stop crying? Stop pushing me away!”

Asthma?

Wait a minute.

Violet couldn't believe her ears.

Her baby did not have an asthma,

When- When did she catch it?

Thrown into another wave of shock, Violet was lost for a few seconds.

Standing there, she digested her daughter's statement.

No!

She shook her head rapidly, fresh tears suddenly leaving her eyes.

Violet didn't need to be told what happened.

She only needed to put two and two together to realize…

Her baby must have caught it during the sandstorm.

Violet sobbed, grief compounding her heart.

Disregarding every rational thought, she barged into the room, her vision blurred with tears.

“Mimi!”

Sighting her daughter sitting on a chair, Violet hugged her tight, her rapid sobs increasing.

“I’m so sorry, Baby!” She wept bitterly. “I'm a bad Mummy, I'm very sorry!!!”

If Violet hadn't been careless, her baby wouldn't have caught this illness.

She battled with asthma for as long as she could remember.

It was the most heart-wrenching experience.

She'd never wish this situation upon even her enemy.

“Baby, I'm very sorry!!!” She went on, weeping and apologizing. “Can you please forgive Mummy?”

Mimi made a sound of discomfort, and Violet noticed she was hugging her too tightly.

When she released her, Mimi pulled away.

Her lips trembled as she wiped Violet's tears. “It’s not your fault, Mummy. Aunt Freya told me not to, but I sneaked away.”

Huh?

Violet paused.

Why?

“Why did you run off, Baby?”

“I just wanted to find Daddy and ask him to apologize for pushing me away.” Mimi blinked her teary eyes. “Daddy still doesn't want me.”

So it was because of Clyde.

Violet thought her baby would stay away after Clyde pushed her away once.

How could her baby be so adamant that he was her father?

This was too bizarre to be true!

“Violet?”

The deep voice didn't belong to her baby but the man towering in front of them.

Violet stilled, her tears freezing.

Overwhelmed by her emotions, Clyde's thought had slipped her mind.

Was it too late to run?

Violet didn't dare look up.

Her heart suddenly racing, she kept her head lowered, hugging her daughter.

But Clyde squatted down to their heights.

His cold fingers touched her chin, trembling a bit.

Then slowly, he lifted her chin, forcing her to stare at him.

Recognition flashed in his eyes, accompanied by a shocked look.

“Vi…” he trailed off, his voice barely audible.

Violet's heart stopped beating.

The same aqua blue eyes.

The same sculpted handsome face, deeply engraved in her memory.

For five years, she'd tried every possible means to forget him,

To wipe his face off her memory.

Staring at him sent her into a trance.

It brought back memories of the passionate moment they'd shared that morning before he left for work.

Not long after,

Violet felt a stomach ache and decided to go to the hospital,

Then the doctor broke the most unusual news to her.

She was pregnant!

But then, she found her husband cheating…

“Violet Harris…” Clyde's exclamation snapped her to the present. “It's really you!!!”
