My Late Sister’s Husband

Chapter Eight

Chapter 8

Chapter Eight

As the days passed on, Katrina’s fears didn’t cease increasing.

Aaron’s advances on her were always inevitable. He became bolder each day, and sometimes, she felt helpless and mad.

She was mad at herself that she was allowing this to happen. Because eventually, his goal was only one thing. To get rid of her.

The idea of changing rooms was out of the question. Katrina had tried to bring it up and Aaron didn’t give her a chance.

He had acted considerate toward her. Was this the tactic he used with her sister?

Katrina supported her forehead with both hands, a foreboding headache looming ahead.

One week had passed since she visited Aaron’s office and found that one clue. And she was growing impatient. She didn’t have much time left.

Just yesterday, her boss had phoned her and threatened that she might lose her job if she didn’t resume work early.

Katrina had only taken a leave for a few days prior to the wedding. She planned to return to work immediately after she was done executing her mission.

And right now, the future seemed cloudy ahead.

Her leg had healed and Aaron didn’t waste any opportunity to touch her.

Although they hadn’t gone all the way yet, Katrina was afraid that it might happen soon. Her body rarely cooperated with her these days.

Aaron’s footsteps broke her out of her thoughts and Katrina sat properly on the swing. She was in the yard just outside the house.

“You’re up early,” He said as he came forward and sat beside her.

Well, Katrina was up early because last night she couldn’t catch any sleep. Not after responding to his kiss. Her greatest mistake.

Although she didn’t stay up as much as before every night and would doze off, last night had been just like the first nights she was here.

The only difference was that she had been awake those nights because of the fear that he might harm her. While last night, she had actually been awake because of the guilt.

The guilt that she had committed an unforgivable mistake. The guilt that she had let her sister down.

“Yeah.” Katrina shifted a bit and forced a smile. “I didn’t want to miss the fresh breeze of the morning.”

“That is good.” Aaron nodded and spread one arm across her back. He held her shoulder and pulled her to him until her body collided with his. His action seemed deliberate.

“You’re not going to work?” Katrina asked. She couldn’t shift away from his embrace and she found herself melting against his body. Her head was once again muddled.

“Have you forgotten?” Aaron chuckled. “Today is the weekend.”

Definitely, Katrina had forgotten that.

And today being the weekend meant that he was going to spend the whole day with her, right?

She didn’t like that idea.

Aaron rubbed her shoulder, then his hand traveled up to her hair and he began stroking it.

“Do you know what day it is today?” he suddenly asked.

Katrina shook her head and stared up at him.

“Today’s the exact day we got married.” Aaron continued.

Today was Saturday. Katrina wondered what was special about that.

“And it is the exact day your sister passed away,” Aaron added.

Katrina’s senses were instantly on alert as he said that. What was he trying to insinuate?

Silence descended and she held his gaze. Maybe there was fear in her eyes or maybe not, because the slight smile on Aaron’s face never faded.

His words sent shivers down her spine and a bad premonition in her heart.

Her lips parted but no words came out. And Aaron used his thumb to trace the outline of her lips.

He opened his mouth to say something, but the silence was broken by something else. The ringing sound of his phone.

Aaron released her shoulder and Katrina quickly put a distance between them. He sprang to his feet all of a sudden after bringing out his phone.

And he glanced at her then at his phone before he strode away in a random direction.

Aaron’s sudden action shocked Katrina to the core. For the first time, she had seen the emotion she had long been searching for. Aaron was acting suspiciously.

If Katrina hadn’t acted fast, she wouldn’t have known the direction he took.

Aaron headed to the parking lot, never glancing back, and she tiptoed after him.

The phone was still ringing and when he reached the parking lot, his eyes wandered around. Katrina ducked behind a car and concealed her presence.

And Aaron answered the phone and placed it on his ear. As he did that, Katrina quickly brought out her own phone.

He didn’t whisper, his voice was loud and clear, and she recorded everything from the start to the finish.

.

Katrina’s heart broke and her cheeks dampened with tears as she listened to the recording.

She had run back to the house and locked herself in one of the extra bedrooms when Aaron was done making the phone call.

Aaron didn’t also come into the house. She had heard the sound of his car leaving immediately. He was in a rush.

“She doesn’t suspect anything.”

The recording played in the background.

“We have to finish the job as soon as possible.”

“Killing Cassie had been an easy fit, we can’t make any mistakes, we have to act fast.”

We.

Aaron mentioned we.

Although Katrina didn’t know the mysterious person he was speaking with on the phone, she didn’t have the time to investigate that. She couldn’t waste any time.

If Aaron’s words held the same meaning she had suspected, then her life was also in danger. And very soon, she was going to end up like her sister.

Katrina did not linger in the house.

She left the room and ran upstairs where she picked up the photo and one of Aaron’s car keys.

And she drove out of the house with a speed that scared the wits out of her. She drove straight to her parent’s place.
