Chapter 41 (SELFISHNESS)

The cry of Jeff woke everyone up in the apartment 6:30am. Grandma left her room to go check up on him and to her dismay, no one was there to attend to him.

She carried him up from the bed and cuddled his in her arms.

“No one attended to you right, so sorry my little boy.” She sat down on the bed cuddling him to her chest. “What’s Harry doing?” She stood up from the bed and left the room to make milk for him to drink.

“He’s so hungry.” She held him to her chest after feeding him the baby formula and within some minutes, Jeff fell asleep again. She quietly dropped him on the bed, covered him and left the room quietly.

She turned the door handle of Harry’s room and barged in angrily. Harry was still sleeping, he sprang up after she slapped his leg.

“Grandma, what is it this time?” He grumpily sat upright. “Harry, are your ears blocked?” She pointed to her own ears.

“No they are not,” he said rubbing his eyes. “You are not deaf right? Didn’t you hear Jeff crying?” she asked him again. “No,” he said.

“Then you are really deaf. How can you tell me you didn’t hear him crying? My room isn’t close to his and I heard his cries but you and your Mum didn’t even go to his room to know why he was crying.” She inhaled.

“Harry, you have failed as a father. You needed that child so bad that you opted for a surrogate. You finally got him but you followed your Mum’s orders and took him away from his mum.”

“You know what, tell me here I can find his Mum. Jeff needs her. He would starve to death if he’s not with his Mum.” She stormed out of the room.

“I don’t even understand what she’s saying.” He put his head on the pillow and closed his eyes. He heard Grandma entered his Mum’s room and started shouting at her.

“This woman is back with her troubles,” he sighed, shaking his head.

“Mum, keep your voice low.” Evelyn covered her ears with a pillow when Grandma didn’t stop yelling at her. “How dare you covered your ears when I’m talking to you?” She fling the pillow from her and threw it in the floor.

“Mum please. Allow me to sleep for God’s sake,” she pleaded. “How can I let you sleep when you and your son have deprived me of my own sleep. I would have been sleeping now but here I am. You and your son left that poor soul in a big room alone, he was crying but none of you went to check up on him.” She scolded her.

“Mum, no one asked you to go check up on him. It’s the maid’s work and they should be the one to be scolded not me.” She rolled her eyes. “Oh really? It’s the maids job right? Isn’t Jeff your grandson? Evelyn, I’ve been saying this for a very long time now. I’ve been saying this since you were growing up, you are so evil. You have no human feelings, you do things that please you.”

“How can you think of doing something as evil as this to a little boy who knows nothing,” she sighed. “Mum, stop saying that to me please. I’m fed up with it. You can go live with your favorite child and leave me alone. You don’t even like me but you chose to stay here with me,” she scoffed.

“You think I’ll leave this house? Never. Just bring back that girl wherever you take her to. Jeff needs his mum,” she warned her. “I won’t bring her back. Why would I even do that? She’s just a surrogate and her work is done.”

“A surrogate but she loves her child and doesn’t want to leave him behind. Evelyn, I’m giving you from now to next week. Bring back that girl or you taste my furry,” she snapped her fingers and left the room.

“What’s all this. Can’t I at least have some peace in this house?” she sighed. “I have to do something about that girl fast before Mum find out she’s living in this house.” She covered her head with a blanket and closed her eyes.

8:30am after Naomi and the rest has left the Quarters, Emily went through her things searching for the diary. She has been thinking about the last word Naomi said before she paused. It was about the pregnancy and she wanted to know what happened after that.

She was lucky the diary was inside Naomi’s bag and she quickly brought it out. Emily locked the door so that Naomi won’t come in to find her reading the diary. She sat on the bed and flipped the page to where she paused.

“Here it is.” She smiled. ’ dear diary, I found out I was two months pregnant after my husband died. I left home after the burial to another city in disguise of going to school. I left Harry and my two girls with Mum and disappeared. As fate would have it, I delivered a boy and a girl Seven months later but unfortunately, the twins were sick’ she turned the next page.

‘I would have take them back home and no one would suspect me because I gave birth Seven months after his death. I would have been the most happiest because I finally has a son of my own but I left them with a stranger and returned back home like nothing had happened.’

“What a wicked woman.” Emily shook her head.
