Chapter 48 (PRETEND)

Emily entered the kitchen, she didn’t see anyone there and she smiled.

“My time to shine. Michael and Naomi won’t starve again.” She brought out some eggs and bread from the fridge and placed them on the table. “Let’s make bread toast.” She made a lot of it until the bread got to the half of the bag.

“I can’t finish this. Maybe I should take some to Michael and Naomi.” She made tea in a flask and put some of the bread toast on a plate and covered it with another plate. She ate her portion first and when she was done, a maid entered the kitchen.

“What are you doing back here?” She went to open the back door but it was locked. “How did you get in here, and who told you to prepare anything?”

Emily put the empty plate and cup in the sink and washed her hand. She cleaned her hand with a tissue and threw it in the trash basket.

“It’s you again.” She leaned her back on the wall and folded her arms. “You know what, stay out of my lane or I’ll punish you for disrespecting me the other time.” Emily pointed at her.

“Do your worse, I’m not afraid of you. Wait until I tell Ma’am Evelyn you are here.” “You can tell her whatever you want to say. She can’t send me out of here.”

The maid looked at the plate and jug Emily was trying to carry from the table.

“What’s that?” she asked. “Oh this are left overs from what I eat. And don’t even think I’ll give it to you,” she smiled. “Who are you taking that to?” she asked. “My friends.”

“Your friends. I don’t know who told you, you can come in here and do whatever you want. You know what, I’ll go tell Ma’am Evelyn.” She went out of the kitchen and Emily scoffed.

“I can’t follow the back door since this little devil is here. I know what to do,” she snapped her fingers and left the kitchen.

Grandma was in the sitting room when the maid passed her and went upstairs. As she was coming down with Evelyn, Emily was already speaking to Grandma.

“Grandma, can I bring the left overs of my breakfast to my friends? I don’t want it to go to waste,” she asked politely. “Of course you can,” Grandma said.

“Which friends?” Evelyn asked coming down the stairs. Emily lifted up her head, she stood upright looking at Evelyn.

“You’ve got problem with that?” Grandma asked her. “Yes Mum. No one takes good out of this apartment to the servants,” she said. “So you mean she should dump the food?” Grandma chuckled. “Yes, let her dump it. Those servants can’t eat what we eat in this house.” She turned to Emily.

“Go dump the food in the refuge bin.” She commanded. Emily knew why she was doing that. She knew she was going to give the food to Naomi and Michael.

“Emily won’t dump that food.” Grandma looked at Emily. “Who are you taking it to again?” she asked. “My friends at the Servants Quarters,” she said.

“What’s their names?” Grandma asked. Emily looked at Evelyn and grinned. “Naomi and Michael.”

“You know what, you can take food to them anytime you like and you can invite them to come visit us anytime they feel like.”

“Yes, Grandma.” Emily left for the kitchen. She came out with a tray containing the plate of toast, a jug of tea and two glass cups. “I won’t take long,” she said to Grandma and left.

“Why are you doing this, Mum? Emily can’t be given the go ahead to do whatever she likes. I don’t like this, Mum.” Evelyn went back to the room angrily.

“And you, come here.” She gestured to the maid to stand in front of her. “What did you say to her?” she asked. “I’m sorry.” She apologized with her eyes fixed on the floor.

“When next you repeat this, I’ll make sure I fire you,” she threatened. “I won’t do that again. I’m sorry Grandma.” She apologized. “Sorry for yourself. Now listen carefully and make sure you tell your partner what I’m about to say now. None of your should tamper with Emily because if you do, you know the next thing. Pretend she doesn’t even exist in this house.”

“Yes Ma’am.” “Now, leave.” Grandma commanded and she hurried away.

Michael and Naomi sat in front of the Quarters. None of them say anything to each other as the both of them were lost in their own thoughts. Emily chuckled softly, she wondered why the twins didn’t go to the garden with their colleagues.

“Hey.” They raised up their heads at the same time. They were so lost that they didn’t even know when Emily walked up to them.

“Emily!” Naomi stood on her feet excitedly. “Look who’s excited. I thought you said you won’t miss me.” She said and Naomi stamped her feet on the ground.

“I missed you.” She wanted to hug Emily but Emily stepped back. “Easy!” she said. “Like seriously, you don’t want to hug me?”

Naomi didn’t even notice the tray in Emily’s hand.

“Look, I brought this for you,” she said and they became more happier. “Emily, you are the best.” They sat down and the put the tray in between them.

“Wow!” Naomi exclaimed. “It’s our favorite,” Michael added. “Awn.” She watched them. “I’ll take this.” Michael picked the one in front of Naomi and she quickly grabbed his hand.

“No it’s mine.” Emily watched them argued. At first, she thought they were playing until it got so serious. “Wait, I know what to do.” She took the bread from them and picked up the other plate.
