Chapter 31: Who Are You II

The woman’s next reaction was dropping the small board in her hands and looking at her with horror-filled eyes.

“W–Who are you?” She stammered.

Lucy was releived that the woman did not scream but she was also apprehensive.

“Wait.” The woman gasped again and continued. “A–Are you an angel?” Her hand flew to her chest and she quickly took a step back while shaking her head rapidly.

“N–No please. I’m not ready to die. Don’t take my life now. I– I have children to feed and a family to take care off. If you leave me now, I swear I’ll…”

She kept on mumbling and Lucy would have laughed if it was on a normal day. But her prank days were over. She very well knew that.

“I’m not an Angel, Ma’am… I– I am here to get some clothes,” she finally said.

The woman stopped walking back and narrowed her eyes. “Really?”

“Yes.” Lucy nodded. Then she did the stupidest thing she would ever think of. She pinched herself and she winced.

“See… I’m only a human like you.” She added while rubbing the place she pinched which had already turned red. But her action payed off as the woman patted her chest in releif.

“But what are you doing here at this time, Young Lady?”

The woman’s eyes was now filled with confusion as she walked forward and sized her up. “You look like you don’t belong here. Are you a celebrity?”

Lucy shook her head, trying to put on her best smile. “I’m here to get some clothes.” Her eyes wandered the place again while the woman’s eyes followed her.

“Clothes?”

Lucy nodded.

The woman’s expression brightened and she made an oh sound.

“Please help yourself, Dear. There are many categories of clothes here, you can have almost every design and color you want. And believe me, they’re all at affordable prices.” She instantly activated her advertising mode and took Lucy’s hands then led her inside.

When they walked past the counter, more clothes came into view. Lucy did not care about the colors or design, she only needed something comfortable to wear. She settled for a pair of jeans and a purple cotton blouse.

The woman complimented her sense of style and she chuckled for the first time. Her bubbly personality reminded her so much of her Mum. How was she coping now? She wondered. Her mother must have obviously fallen sick after witnessing what happened yesterday. She must be heartbroken at the moment.

She sighed, and turned her attention back to the woman who had probably said something.

“Are you okay, Dear?” The woman asked with a frown.

Lucy gave her the best smile she could manage and asked for the changing room. And the woman led her toward a door at a corner.

After getting inside, she slipped out of her dress and got changed. The clothes she had chosen were her exact size and she finally took in a breath of the air. Her stomach grumbled and she grimaced.

Walking out of the room, she found the woman waiting for her with other sets of clothes to try on, but she was really satisfied with this one.

“This will do, Ma’am.”

“I agree with you.” The woman nodded with a satisfied grin. “I bet everything here will look great on you, Miss. I’ve never seen such beauty my whole life. That is why I thought you were an angel back there. Ahhh, my poor heart.”

Lucy laughed softly and shook her head. Then she remembered the matter at hand and she lowered her head.

The woman asked her again what was wrong, and Lucy fidgeted with the dress in her hands..

“I don’t have money,” she whispered. Saying those words, a realization dawned on Lucy. She really didn’t have money. It was the first time those words have left her mouth and the intensity of it scared her beyond measure. How was she going to survive without money?

Her father would in doubt freeze her account. She was completely done for.

She pushed those thoughts aside for the moment before focusing again on the woman who looked at her with a deep frown.

Lucy continued with her initial plan and went on. “S–So… If you could please accept this.” She lifted up the gown. “I promise I’ll pay you back. No, you can even have it. I– I just wore it once.”

She quickly changed her mind. The woman might sell the dress and get her money back.

Lucy felt guilty, having to part with the dress. Gina’s sister-in-law, Maya, had put so much time and energy into making it, even though she was heavily pregnant. But she had no choice.

The woman stayed at the gown in a trance. And Lucy hopped she accepted it.

“Y–You mean I should take your dress?”

Lucy nodded.

“But It’s a designer’s label. What am I supposed to do with it?”

The woman seemed like she was speaking to herself this time as her widened eyes darted from the dress to the ones in her hands. She was probably comparing them.

“No, this isn’t fair.” She shook her head quickly. “If my eyes aren’t playing tricks on me, then this dress can practically buy this whole shop. These diamonds are obviously real.”

Then she looked up at Lucy as if suddenly realizing something and the dresses in her hands fell on the floor.

“Who are you?” Her brows furrowed.

Lucy wished the ground could open up and swallow her up. Then maybe this misery will end. Her stomach grumbled and beads of sweat trickled down her back. She was lucky enough that the woman did not know her or her story, otherwise, she might have chased her out long ago.

Now, what was she supposed to say, being faced with this question? She just wanted something to wear, before she could think of what to do next. She was helpless enough.
