Chapter 30: Who Are You

“No.”

“Not her.”

“Dad—”

“Case dismissed.” The man stood up and gave them a stern look. “If I were you, I wouldn’t want to cross her. You know what happens when she’s angry… And you know you’ve pressed her buttons this time. You wouldn’t want to step foot into the mansion any time soon or even try to reject this offer.”

The twins grimaced and sat back on the couch. They couldn’t believe they would really fall into their parents trap this time. The couple had been anticipating this kind of opportunity for a long time. Now, they would be stuck with work, work, and plenty of work.

They glanced up at their father who had on a serious expression but they knew quite well he was actually celebrating inside. What king of parent laugh at their sons’ mystery for God’s sake.

“I have concluded everything with the shareholders. You can start sharing your tasks from now. And none of you should even think of slacking off,” their father said before storming out of the office. Even slamming the door, to make himself seem intimidating enough.

The twins sighed heavily and relaxed back on the couch. If it was their mother, the woman would have taken more dire measure. The fact that it was their father that broke this news, they didn’t want to imagine how hopping mad she would be at the moment.

“How should we share the work,” George said and Greg chuckled as they weren’t even given the opportunity to object. Their parents really had them this time.

“Let’s make a bet,” he answered and George also chuckled.

“Speaking of a bet,” George murmured. “Have you heard from her?”

Greg rolled his eyes and sighed.

“You didn’t.” His brother added.

Lucy strolled in the dark empty street with both hands wrapped around herself. The bitting cold wind scratched at her skin and the discomfort of her dress increased every minute.

Her eyes darted around the place. After walking out of the residential area she had bumped into the old taxi driver again who gave her a ride here.

She recalled the man’s words. ‘Reporters will flood to you the moment you are sighted. News of what happened has spread across the city. And now that her father’s company is on shaky ground as a result, it is the hottest topic in town.’

True to his words, after just taking the route that lead downtown, their car had drove across a stream of reporters who were hovering around her brother’s company.

She had caused that chaos. A pang of regret hit her whenever she thought of that. The decades long reputation of her family had been destroyed in one night due to her.

Her hands were tied and her heart ached because of that. There was no way she could convince her family of Cedric’s true colors. She should have listened to the warning alarms in her head on that night and shouldn’t have fallen for his lies. Then maybe, just probably… Things wouldn’t have turned out this way. If she had put up a fight before it was too late, luck might have played by her side and her family might have believed her.

Anyways, things had happened and couldn’t be undone. There was no use mulling over it now.

Lucy breathed out a sigh and lowered herself on a bench she spotted nearby. Her feet were sore and she was famished and exhausted. She was even surprised that she was able to pass through the day without eating anything. But then, it was grief that filled her stomach the whole day.

The street lights flickered now and then. The houses in that area were mostly for mid-class citizens. And many shops lined the street and some were still opened.

Lucy scratched at her arm which had started itching. She needed to get out of this dress. Her hair had loosened from the bun and flying everywhere down her back. She was sure anyone that saw her now would thing she was a ghost. And she really did look like one.

The purse was still in her hand, luckily, she hadn’t misplaced it. She looked inside and sighed. Only her freaking phone was inside. Luckily, the taxi driver didn’t demand money from her.

She looked down at her dress and an idea came to her mind. The sight of it reminded so much of last night and the engagement. And where was her shoes? She wondered. As she had walked out empty feet from Greg’s house this morning.

Greg

Her body shuddered at the remembrance of his name. Hopefully, they wouldn’t cross paths again.

Lucy’s hands wandered to her hair and she rearranged it, trying to look as presentable as possible. After that, she pushed herself up from the bench and continued walking along the street lights.

The sounds of dogs barking suddenly came from a distance and she increased her pace with a pounding heart. Her eyes roamed from shops to shops, houses to houses, and Lucy found herself walking into a more crowded area.

She halted as the noises increased. Even at this hour of night, people were still roaming the street and carrying on most of their activities. Many more shops were lit up and she noticed a supermarket far ahead. No, she couldn’t let anyone see her like this.

With a stroke of luck, her eyes caught one of the shops and without thing twice, she hurried toward it, avoiding people’s gazes.

After getting inside the shop, her expression brightened and a sigh of relief escaped her lips. She hadn’t seen wrong. Every counter, every rack, and every glass cabinet was filled with clothes, bags, and shoes. The shop was also empty and it seemed like they were about to close as a woman came walking in her direction with a closed sign in her hand.

The woman stilled and gasped on seeing her. Then her lips parted and Lucy thought she was about to scream. She braced herself for whatever it was that would happen next. But then, nothing…
