Chapter 39: A Disaster

Lucy shook her head but nodded quickly. ‘Argh.’ She should leave her alone already.

“I don’t understand, do you mean yes or no?” Thea asked in confusion.

“Ahem, Thea.” Jai cleared his throat to grab her attention. “Where did you say you’re headed to?”

“Oh, the company downtown we’re almost there,” Thea answered. But her attention was not diverted even a bit. And she turned her eyes back to Lucy.

“Jai, is your sister mute?” She asked in confusion. “Why does she keeps shaking her head?”

“Ehm—” Jai was about to answer when Lucy nodded again to indicate that she was right.

“Oh.” Thea make a sound of pity. “But she’s so pretty, poor girl.”

She even patted Lucy’s hair and Lucy shuddered. This nice side of Thea even looked more scary than her usual evil side.

“Of course she is.” Jai chuckled.

“I can see why you don’t post her on social media. Tsk tsk tsk, you must be so ashamed to have a mute relative,” Thea went on. “Does she attend a regular school or you know, one for the irregular kids. What grade is she?”

Now, that really hit deep and Lucy’s fingers curled into fists. Did she look like someone that was supposed to be in highschool? ‘Urgh!’ how she wished to strangle that dump girl with her acid mouth.

“You can’t speak about her like that,” Jai stated.

“But you know mean, Jai. I don’t usually get curious. But I really am, right now.” She chuckled. “Anyways, let’s talk of more important things.”

“Like how you’re searching for a job. Or how you recently broke up with your boyfriend.” Jai chuckled but his tone was strangely harsh.

“Yeah the job.” Thea clicked her tongue. “I’ll land this one without a doubt. Heared that the CEO’S hot. You know, some popular Casanova. It’s already in the bag, I assure you,” she said proudly.

“And thanks for your concern, but I don’t really feel anything about the break up. Besides, I have a bigger fish I’ve set my eyes on.” She continued, seemingly not minding his tone.

“Oh.” Jai’s lips twitched at the sides. However, Thea was not done speaking and Lucy was afraid by the time they dropped her, their ears would be bleeding.

“Speak about breakup.” Her voice rose to a higher frequency. “Have you heard the latest gossip in town?”

“About what?” Jai frowned, and Lucy dreaded what was coming next.

“About the all high and mighty princess of the campus.”

“Oh, that…” Jai trailed off and glanced sideways at Lucy. “I don’t know, talk about something else.”

“Of course you know.” Thea laughed. “My friends made me watch it live on TV even though I didn’t really want to. Who knew it could turn out to be fun.” She gave a long laugh and leaned forward. “You should see how dramatic the whole thing was. It was a complete disaster. Took a ring from a guy, and kissed another guy minutes after. That was so legendary. She’s exceeded my expectations, I should give her credits for that.”

The car was once again filled with her laughter while Lucy tried so hard to keep her fists to herself. She shut her eyes so tightly they hurt. And her heart burned with something. Anger— anger and also shame.

Dramatic. That was what her engagement turned out to be. And also legendary but in a bad way. What more disaster could someone wish in their life? Was that what everyone thought of her now?

The enormity of the situation was too hard to handle. Maybe if she arrived at City X, she should make that her permanent resident. Coming back here wouldn’t do her any good. Even though the media was shut, people would never stop speaking of it.

Her father was right. She was a disgrace to the whole family.

“Thea, don’t you think it is more appropriate to gossip with your girl pals? Now, will you keep your mouth shut?” Jai gritted out.

“Geez.” Thea leaned back and folded her hands. “Come on, it’s such a juicy topic. Even the old folks are speaking of it at the moment. No one has ever seen such disgrace in the city. That’s what happens to the likes of her. Always attracting guys like flies. Who knows if she’s going to kiss a dozen guys or even put on a dozen rings on her wedding. Those spoilt brats I’m telling you, that’s what they’re only good at. Causing trouble now and then. I knew this would happen, with all those scandals she kept causing in college.”

“You’re so toxic.” Jai sighed helplessly and gave Lucy an appologetic look. “We’ll get to the company in a moment, just hold on,” he said to Lucy but Thea thought he was speaking to her.

So she let out another high-pitched giggle and flipped her head to the side. “You’re such a sweetheart, Jai. You’ll be the one I’ll call immediately I get the job. Maybe we should hook up sometimes, I like mysterious guys. They now totally my thing.”

“Oh, really?” Jai taunted and he shook his head with a deep chuckle.

Lucy kept her fists clenched and she remained silent through out the right. Those words kept playing in her head. Being reminded of them was like cutting another raw wound in her heart. Were those scandals really her fault. Where they what led to the predicament she was currently in?

What if Thea was right? And her mother’s words were true?

But how could she understand a situation she didn’t even have the power to handle?

When the car pulled over in front of a huge company, Thea got out and said her high-pitched reply.

The car sank into silence and she opened her eyes to find Jai staring at her with worry-filled.

“Are you alright?” He tried to hold her hand.

No she wasn’t alright. A lump formed in her throat and she could feel tears burning in her eyes. Those fears that were threatening to fall. And those tears she didn’t want to show anyone, anymore. It would only make a look weak and feel vulnerable than how she was at the moment.

And that was the look he was giving her now. Pity. She hated it.
