Chapter 58: What’s Your Name

Greg leaned back against his chair and swiveled it round, to face the large floor to ceiling window, and get a look at the frenzy city blue.

A small laugh, almost self-fulfilling and self-mocking, made it’s way out of his lips and echoing back in his chest. He couldn’t still wrap his fingers around why he always ended up knowing more than he should. They said opposites attract. However, in his case, the opposite seem to be the norm. Sometimes, he chased after threatening situations. But most times, dangers came knocking at his door and revealing themselves in the strangest of ways.

A loud bang at his desk snapped him out of his thoughts and he swiveled around so fast, but in those few seconds he had pulled up the veil that he always wore. That veil of smile that cascaded around every kind of emotion he was dealing with. Either gloom or happiness, the smile was always there as a shield.

When turned around, his eyes were met with the woman who was glaring so hard at him and trying the best she could to intimidate him.

Greg widened the play smile on his face and used both hands to support the back of his neck. That infuriated her further. But that was what he liked. It was what he liked to see. He couldn’t wait for her to finally get fed up and live him alone. His mother thought a fiery big assistant was all he needed to put him in his place. Well, even Greg didn’t know what would turn him into a completely different personality. At least, not yet.

He allowed his gaze to fall on the new stacks of documents she had dropped on his desk and he let out a tired sigh. “Why can’t you go through them first, Mrs. Wood. My fingers are all aching already,” he said in a whiny voice, waving his fingers to her.

Truthfully, he didn’t feel anything. But Greg was just not used to having this pile of work. He rarely even visited the company in the past. However, Mrs. Wood, as hard as her name and as heavy as well, she was determined to make his life hell. That was by the way, her mission.

Her glare took another degree and her huge hands clenched into tight fists. Greg already saw it coming. And in her deep grumpy voice, she thundered, “You left work when it was not even closing hours yesterday. There’s a lot of papers that required your signature. Yet, you didn’t ask for a permission. You didn’t ask for a leave. You just left. Is that what you were supposed to do!!!?”

Her eyes blazed into him and her chest heaved up and down. Greg wouldn’t be surprised if the woman suddenly launched an attack on him.

He left work because he had something more important to take care of. And why did he even need permission to leave his own company. He was the CEO— well, technically, he was now the chairman. A position he wasn’t proud of. And he just had to be gifted with the cruelest assistant ever. An assistant that turned out to be conspiring with his own mother.

“Mrs. Wood, why don’t you take a seat and relax?” He made his smile wider. “High blood pressure is on the rest nowadays, don’t you think you’re overworking yourself?”

Greg would very much prefer she went out and continue with her bullying of his employees. He couldn’t care less. At least, since she came the work place was more productive. No one dared to slack off. But having her breathing down his neck was definitely not what he planned to keep on with.

“You don’t tell me about blood pressures young man.” Mrs. Wood slapped a palm on the desk, jolting him. Her bulgy eyes glared more and her expression was stern. She could very well pass as an inspector in a thriller movie. “I already have one, and I’m proud of it. Now get your ass off that damned chair because you have a meeting in ten minutes.”

Greg had to admit. The only thing he liked about this woman was her proper use of provocative language. She had that gift of finding the actual slang to use, a stark contrast to her age. It was a rare occurrence which amused him. He couldn’t stop wondering if she received training in the art of bullying. That amused him.

Without waiting to be jabbed both mentally and emotionally with those abusive words, which he nonetheless found intriguing, Greg gave her another grin and rose to his feet.

“And I’m going to look into it. Whatever the hell made you leave yesterday. I will find it and see it to its bloody end,” Scoffed Mrs. Wood.

That made Greg stopped in his tracks and he let out a chuckle. She was speaking about his newfound pet at home. Well, too late. He was smarter. Because the first thing he did when he arrived this morning was to wipe off every record the surveillance cameras took yesterday. He was one step ahead.

“Go ahead. I don’t mind.” He gave her a careless shrug and walked past her out of the office.

On his way to the conference, she left his back and stopped following him. Fortunately, she had found something wrong with one of the secreties and giving the unfortunate girl a piece of her mind. She instructed another secretary to follow him with the documents.

The girl was a newbie and she seemed to love her new job. She not only scurry behind him but came to walk shoulder to shoulder with him.

Greg’s lips twitched into an interested smile and he glanced sideways at her. She had on a plaster of makeup on her face. Too much makeover. The long extension on her lashes almost reached her cheek bones. The fiery red lipstick was no different from blood.

“What’s your name?” He quirked a brow.
