The President's Daring Wife
Chapter 8: Questioning His Capabilities
Chapter 10
Eve sprang to her feet, the earlier anticipation returning to her heart.
“Ethan.” She hurried up to him. “Ethan, you’re back. How could you spend the night at the company? Don’t you know that you’re making me feel like a bad wife?”
The irritation on Ethan’s face when he saw Mia disappeared, and now he was studying Eve like a foreign object.
“Eve! What is the meaning of this!?” Mia was almost yelling at her. She looked more confused than Ethan. In fact, she looked lost. “Have you lost your head, Eve? The person standing in front of you Isn’t Cole but Ethan Anderson.”
“So what if he’s Ethan?” Eve gave her a furtive glance before returning her eyes to Ethan. “Isn’t he my husband? Why do you look so surprised, Mia?”
“Eve!” From the corner of her eyes, Eve could see Mia’s fists clenching. “Are you even alright, have you lost your mind? Why are you acting weird?”
Eve could feel Ethan’s anger like the smoke of boiling lava. She could feel his anger toward Mia. And she knew he was only holding back because of her.
Mia had said worse things in the past and went scot-free because Eve had always defended her in Ethan’s presence.
As Eve did not answer her question, Mia looked more agitated. She stomped to where Eve stood with Ethan and grabbed Eve’s arm.
“Wake up, Eve!” Mia shook her. “I hope it’s not what I’m thinking. You even rejected my call yesterday, is it because of him?”
“Yes.” Eve didn’t waste time to reply.
“Oh my God, Eve!” Mia stared at her as if she’d gone crazy. “Don’t tell me you’re all over him now just because he slept with you once.”
“Is that a problem?” Eve raised a brow and waddled into Ethan’s embrace. While Mia facepalmed herself, shaking her head in pity.
“Oh, Eve, you’re so naive,” Mia lowered her voice and said softly. “I bet Ethan was good in bed, but believe me, there are other men better than him. I can promise you even Cole is.”
“Watch your mouth, Mia.” Ethan shot daggers at her. “Know the kind of things you will say in my presence.”
“I’m sorry if my words hurt your feelings, Mr. Anderson. But that is the truth. I can’t just watch you delude my best friend.”
Ethan could not handle his rage. He also wasn’t the kind of person that liked speaking much. Therefore, he pushed Eve aside and wanted to walk away, but Eve held him back by holding his arm.
“You’ve gone too far, Mia. How did you even know that Cole might be better in bed than my husband is? I advise you to watch your language, you can’t say such mean things in my presence.”
Mia’s jaws dropped, she almost tripped in shock. “Since when did you start talking back to me, Eve? Tell me you’ve really lost it.”
Eve shook her head and sighed. Then she looked toward Ethan. “Ethan, I’m so sorry for letting this lunatic wander here. And you can’t just stand still and let her question your capabilities. She’s gone too far.”
“Ahh! Eve, what do you think you’re doing!?” Mia exclaimed.
“She’s nothing but trouble in our peaceful home. If you let strangers act this way with us, I’m afraid it is going to ruin your reputation.” Eve didn’t pay Mia any attention as she continued speaking to Ethan.
“Hubby.” She tugged at his arm. “How about you teach her a lesson?”
“As you wish.” Ethan no longer looked confused. His rage had taken over. “Guards.” He called out to the bodyguards outside and two of them appeared immediately.
“Young Master,” they both said in unison.
“Throw her out and restrict her from ever coming back. If you see her near this premises, break her legs and throw her into the rubbish dump.”
“Ahhh! M–Mr. Anderson.” Mia’s haughty look was now replaced by the raw fear that showed in her eyes. “Eve, do something.”
Eve scoffed and looked away.
And as the guards dragged her out, she yelled, “Eve! You’re going to regret this! How could you allow them to do this to me?”
Mia’s voice gradually faded in the distance and Eve dusted her hands before letting out a relieved sigh.
“Such nuisance,” she grumbled. It was still hard to believe that she’d let Mia boss her around and do as she pleased with her in the past. The fact that she’d allowed Mia to insult Ethan several times was even more humiliating. Ethan had to endure the disrespect without having the mind to strike back.
“Erm, Ethan.” She took the briefcase from his hand and gave him a warm smile. “From now on, can you stop spending the night at the company? If your workload is too much, you can hire more employees. Just don’t tire yourself out.”
Ethan rubbed his forehead and shut his eyes. He looked tired. “Evelyn.” When he looked up, he gave her a helpless look. “If you need anything, just say it. You’d better not be up to something. This new side of you…”
“Say no more.” Eve placed a finger on his lips, shushing him. “I know you doubt me now, Ethan. You must think I’m up to something new…” She looked down and put on a sad look. “Why don’t you give me a little bit of time to prove to you that I’ve really changed? I won’t cause you any more trouble, I promise.”
Ethan lifted her chin and stared into her eyes. In his eyes were complex emotions.
“You’d better not be upto anything, Eve. As I’ve told you before, divorce is impossible between us. I could handle your tantrums, but this new side of you…” He trailed off and took the briefcase from her hand.
“I’ll repeat. Don’t try anything we’re both going to regret, Eve.”
As he left for the stairs, Eve’s eyes lingered on his back. Was she thinking too much that it would be so easy to work things out?
Things appeared more complicated than she thought. Instead of being happy, Ethan was only wary of this new side of her.
He said he could handle her tantrums, but now that she was acting so cool, he couldn’t tell what she was thinking or whatever she was up to.
It turned out, after all, Ethan didn’t believe her.
