Chapter 9: Be Like A Normal Couple

Ethan was already out of his bedroom by the time Eve decided to join him upstairs. He was now in his study room, and Eve knew better not to disturb him.

In the past, she would use this opportunity to interrupt his work and rain insults on him all day. Those were some of the few times she’d seen Ethan’s real anger.

If there was something Ethan was most punctual about, it literally was his work.

And Eve never stopped angering him whenever he was home. She had a strong feeling that she was the reason why Ethan became so disoriented that he even lost his company in her past life.

At that time, his brother was already arrested, and his grandfather was on his deathbed. The family fell apart and so was the family’s fortune.

Eve turned around and headed back downstairs. There was not much to do in the house, she also never interacted much with the servants. And now she regretted it.

Eve was already thirteen when her grandfather found her and brought her to the city. While she was growing up in the province, she wasn’t treated that exceptionally.

She also had a lot of friends back then. But allowing Mia to influence her, she became haughty and looked down on others.

When it was lunchtime, Ethan didn’t come down. As today was the weekend, he was surely going to spend his whole day in the study room. Wasn’t working all day going to affect his health?

Eve went to the kitchen and met the house Stewardess serving Ethan’s food. She was about to take it upstairs to him.

“Let me take it to him, Elena.” Eve helped her arrange the plate and utensils on a tray. She also brought out a juice and water bottle from the fridge and settled them on the tray with two glass cups.

“M–Ms.s, Madam.” The Stewardess’s shock was evident on her face. “No, please let me do it. The Young Master has instructed me to bring it by myself.”

“Are you defying my request, Elena?” Eve asked gently, picking up the tray.

“No, Madam, I dare not. But…”

“Don’t worry. I’m only going to deliver the food.” Eve offered her a smile, reassuring her.

She could understand that the Stewardess was skeptical of her taking the food to Ethan. Because whenever Eve went to Ethan’s study room, it meant trouble in the house.

Every servant in the house witnessed how she would yell at and argue with Ethan.

On getting upstairs, Eve headed to the study room and knocked softly at the door.

“Come in.”

After a while, Ethan’s voice came from inside.

Eve plastered a smile on her face and pushed the door open. And on sighting her, Ethan shot up to his feet and strode toward her.

“Not today, Eve. I’m very busy, please go out.” He failed at trying to glare at her because there was a hint of helplessness in his tone.

Ethan must have thought that she’d only come here to interrupt his work.

Eve sighed and showed him the tray in her hands. “I’ve only come to deliver your lunch, Ethan.” She walked past him and placed the tray on a small desk in front of the only couch in the study room.

“If you don’t eat it now, the food will lose its warmth,” she turned around and said, unsure if he’d even heard her.

It was as if Ethan had lost his tongue. He stood rooted to one spot. He only moved when Eve sat down on the couch.

“Where is Elena?”

“Elena is downstairs working in the kitchen,” Eve answered him.

Ethan studied her. Then he uncovered the food and checked it out. “Evelyn.” He looked up. “What is all this supposed to mean?”

“I’ve already told you that I’ve turned a new leaf. Do you want me to keep repeating myself?”

“How can I be sure that you’re not up to something?”

“That is why I asked you to give me time to amend my mistakes.”

Ethan sat beside her and covered the food. He maintained a distance from her while giving her a skeptical look.

“Your actions are too good to be true.”

“Eat your food, Ethan.” Eve uncovered the food, struggling to keep her smile in place. She didn’t know why she was sad that Ethan was giving her such a hard time to prove herself. But she’d given him harder times in the past.

“I’m not hungry.” Ethan pushed the plate aside.

Eve’s heart dropped and she sighed heavily. “But you told Elena to bring you the food. If you weren’t hungry, why would you do that?”

She didn’t have to voice out her question. It was so obvious already that Ethan was purposely pushing her away.

“Just go, Eve.” Ethan stood up and headed back to his desk. “I’m not joking, I’m very busy today.”

“I won’t go anywhere until you finish your food.” Eve went after him. “You can’t work on an empty stomach. Aren’t you going to feel dizzy?”

“Quit acting as if you care… It isn’t like you.” Ethan pressed a button on his computer’s keyboard and the screen lit up.

“What if I told you that I’m not acting? Why are you finding it hard to believe me?”

“Tell me one reason why I should believe you.” He picked up a file beside the computer and flipped through it. “Eve, I’m telling you. I don’t have time for this.”

“Urgh! Are you dumb or what! I already told you I’ve turned a new leaf!” Eve lost her cool, and the moment those words left her lips, she gasped and quickly covered her mouth.

“Oh, really?” Ethan’s lips twitched at the corner and he stared at her.

“No no no, Ethan. I’m so sorry, it was a slip of tongue.” Eve waived both hands frantically. “Please forget I said those words.”

“Why should I?” After giving her a careless look, Ethan resumed working on his computer. “You’ve said worse things, don’t start acting like an angel now.”

“Ethan…”

“It wasn’t just a slip of tongue, Eve. This is who you are. I’m relieved that your act is finally over. You think acting nice will make me reconsider issuing you a divorce? You can keep on dreaming.”

“You’re misunderstanding me, Ethan.”

“Just go, Eve. You’ve already wasted most of my time.”

Eve’s fists clenched involuntarily, but she took in deep breaths to stop herself from exploding. She just lost her cool and ruined everything. Ethan now thought that she had acted all good and nice just for him to pity her and fulfill her wish for him to divorce her.

“I don’t want a divorce, Ethan. I will even reject it if you propose it. But we can be like a normal couple, you know. We can’t act like strangers while living under the same roof.”
