Chapter 98: Sister-in-law Doesn’t Look Good

As if they were being chased out of the island, the private jet arrived that evening. No one carried anything with them, just their clothes and phones.

When the plane descended on the helipad at the rooftop of the hospital, Ethan literally jumped out before it came to a complete stop.

“Th–That was dangerous, Ethan!” Eve shouted amidst the blaring sound of the plane. The gynecologist helped her out and she held his hand. “Ethan, please calm down. Let’s hope nothing bad happens.”

The man wasn’t looking at her. His mind seemed to have wandered off, the same condition he’d been in since they left the island.

Ethan brought out his phone and fiddled with it. Then he made a quick phone call before holding her tight and heading down the rooftop with her.

“You can go home, Eve.”

“No, I must see Grandpa.” Her heart was racing and her nerves were wracking inside. She couldn’t just go home like a coward. And Ethan wasn’t himself, she’d rather be with him.

They appeared on the top floor of the hospital which was also the VIP area, and Matt came out of one of the doors lined up in the empty hallway.

“Big Bro, Big Bro, what took you so long?” Eye’s red and big as if he’d been crying, the guy looked haggard and his clothes were stained with blood. “You have to help Grandpa, Big Bro! The doctors think his condition is very serious.”

“How is he?” Ethan didn’t wait for Matt’s reply and he shoved past him and darted for the ward.

“You’re this big, Sister-in-law. What brought you here?” Matt sniffed and wiped his face.

“That’s not the problem right now,” Eve replied and sighed. “Don’t worry, Matt. I’m sure Grandpa will be fine.”

“That is because you haven’t seen him yet.”

“Please don’t say that. Let’s keep hoping and praying.” Eve patted his shoulder and hurried after Ethan into the ward.

Inside the room, Ethan was sitting on a chair by the bed holding the old man’s hands tightly. And Eve approached and sat on the chair beside him.

“Is he sleeping?” She whispered. The old man was bandaged on the forehead. There was also a cast on his right arm.

“I think so,” Ethan whispered back. He sounded unsure.

“Big Bro, Grandpa has been laying like this for hours. He didn’t even move an inch.” Matt entered the ward and stood behind them.

“Did the doctors check on him?” Ethan glanced at him.

“Yes, Big Bro. The doctors check on him every hour. They said nothing is wrong with him, but this Young Master doesn’t believe them. How can my Grandpa not move if nothing is wrong with him?”

Ethan’s expression ebbed with relief and he carefully released the old man’s hand and placed it on the bed. “Stop worrying, Matt. Since the doctors said so, he must be out of danger.”

“But, Big Bro—”

“Quit acting like a baby. Grandpa will be fine.”

After Ethan shut him up, Eve sighed in relief. Seemed like Matt was only exaggerating on the phone. “How did it happen, Matt?” She lifted her eyes to the grumbling guy who had on an offended look.

“This Young Master was not at the scene, but Grandpa’s driver said that they were driving to a province where Grandpa meets with his old friend. And when they reached the narrow road with many trees, a truck appeared and hit the back of the car where Grandpa was sitting.”

“A– A truck?”

“Yes, Sister-in-law. It was a huge truck, and the driver ran away. Imagine the guts of that person. This Young Master is not going to rest until he hunts him down. I’ll get vengeance for my Grandpa no matter what it takes.”

“Ethan…” Eve looked toward Ethan and covered her mouth. If the truck driver ran away, didn’t it sound like a setup?

“I’ll have the authorities look into it and investigate.” As if hearing her unspoken thoughts, Ethan brought out his phone and rose to his feet. While he left the room, Eve shifted close to the old man and held his hand, her heart suddenly pounding.

“Matt, Grandpa is now out of danger. Let’s believe the doctors’ words that he’s fine. But let’s not make any rash decisions, okay?”

“But, Sister-in-law…”

“Your brother will take care of it.” Eve looked at him. “J–Just calm down. We’ll catch the culprits soon.”

“You can’t catch the culprits, Evelyn.” A hoarse voice came from the bed and Eve’s eyes darted to the old man.

“Grandpa…”

“Grandpa! You’re awake!” Matt shot forward, his expression brightening.

“Of course, you can’t even let me sleep. You keep acting like a girl,” the old man scolded and Matt lowered his head.

“Don’t scold him, Grandpa. Matt is only worried about you.” Eve chuckled and looked between the two people.

“She’s right, Grandpa. If you suddenly leave this Young Master alone in this world, how do you expect him to survive? I might as well hang myself and come with you.”

At that moment, Ethan walked into the room while operating his phone and his eyes lit up when they came to the bed.

“Grandpa.” He came back to his chair and held the old man’s hand. “How do you feel? Matt, get the doctor.”

“No need. Matt, come back.” The old man shook his head.

Matt returned to where he was standing and Eve looked at Ethan. “Grandpa said something about the culprits. Why did you say we can’t catch them, Grandpa?” She asked the old man.

“Because it is that boy,” he answered. “I got his call before the accident happened.”

Eve swallowed, and the look of realization on both brothers’ faces was all she needed to know who the old man was talking about.

A strange feeling built up in her stomach and she held her bump with both hands. “W–Wade.”

“I didn’t know he would be this crazy.” The old man continued. “All I did was to drive his father out because of his bad misconduct. Who knew it would backfire this way?”

“What do you mean, Grandpa?” Ethan stared at him in confusion.

“That boy was right. You share the same blood, Grandson. Although I had his father before your father, my first wife didn’t live for long. His father caused me a lot of trouble. He didn’t behave like my own blood. And when I got proof that he was embezzling the company’s funds…”

“You drove him out?” Ethan finished his words.

“I gave him a choice.” His grandfather went on. “To either let go of his wayward life or leave my household. He made the later decision, and I was mad at him for years. I never wanted to speak about him. Who knew he would have a son that’ll cause us this much trouble?”

The Old Man stopped speaking and the ward sank into silence.

Eve rubbed her stomach to curb the unsettling feeling. So that was the story. Wade’s father was the first child and Wade was back to covet the family’s fortune. To think that he could even harm the old man…

“That boy is beyond saving,” the old man moaned, shaking his head. “I don’t know what his father told him, but he appears keen to bring this family down.”

“It’s alright, Grandpa. We’ll make sure the authorities get him,” Ethan reassured.

“How can they? If he’s anything like his father, even the authorities can be fooled by him. My poor Grandson. Tell me, have I made a bad decision by letting his father go?”

The old man’s eyes brimmed with tears. In his eyes was a look of regret.

“Grandpa.” Eve ignored the feeling in her stomach and tugged at his arm. “Don’t blame yourself, a lot of things are bound to happen that we have no control over. It’s not your fault that he chose that path.”

“I feel responsible, Evelyn. I should have reigned him in while he was still young.”

Eve went silent for a while, taking in a deep breath to ease the pain. She could even feel sweat forming on her forehead. “Grandpa, just focus on getting better. If you get discharged soon, we can tackle the problem together. His father might be, but Wade might not be beyond saving.”

“I also want to feel better soon. I was scared that I’d never get to meet my great-grandchildren. Evelyn, when are they going to come out?”

“Grandpa— Ah!” Eve held her stomach as a sharp pain tore through it. “I– I think they’re coming.”

“Eve, stop pretending. Grandpa doesn’t need you to put on this act,” Ethan said calmly.

The pain expanded in Eve’s stomach and she gritted her teeth. “Ethan– please, help— Ahhhh!”

“Big Bro, Sister-in-law doesn’t look good,” Matt who was standing beside her said. “I don’t think she’s pretending.”

Before Ethan’s eyes fall on her, a warm liquid flowed down Eve’s legs, dampening her dress and she screamed louder. “I think my water broke!”

“Damnit!” Ethan cursed, his eyes widening.
