The President's Daring Wife
Chapter 22: Covet Mr. Anderson
Chapter 24
Eve scratched the back of her neck and laughed nervously. “Uhm, Ethan. I know I was wrong in doubting your relationship with her, but you can’t stay mad at me. After all, am I not your darling wife?”
Ethan turned around to head back to his working desk, and she grabbed his arm.
“Ow, come on, Honey. I know I’m wrong, but can you at least eat your lunch?” She forced him to sit on the couch and uncovered the food box.
“I already ordered lunch. Evelyn, go back home.”
Eve unwrapped the spoon and scooped a portion of the food into it. “Ethan, I said I’m sorry. Now stop giving me a hard time. I feel guilty already for making your secretary cry. Here, open your mouth.”
Ethan pressed his lips together as she leveled the spoon on them.
“Ethan,” Eve whined. “Quit acting like a child. This lunch is specifically brought to you from home. I know it’s better than any kind of food out there. And if you don’t eat it, I swear I’ll be mad. You know what happens when you make me unhappy.”
Ethan brought his phone out of his pants pocket and tapped into it. Eve gasped and dropped the spoon back into the food box before snatching the phone.
“Don’t even think about sending me any money. Do you intend to make me mad, Ethan?”
“You started it.” Ethan glowered down at her. “Now, give me my phone.”
Eve sighed and dropped the phone behind her, far away that he couldn’t reach for it. “What do you want me to do, Ethan?”
“Go back home.”
“Are you sure you want me to go back home?” Eve bit her lips and shifted close to him. “In this whole universe, aren’t I always your priority? You should be jumping in joy that I’ve visited you in your office. Not all wives do their husbands this kind of favor.”
“Eve, stop it.” As she undid the buttons of his shirt, Ethan grunted. “Not here.”
“Then promise me you’re going to eat your food.” Eve put the buttons back into their places and smoothened his shirt.
“If I eat, are you going to leave me alone?”
“With a heavy heart, Ethan,” Eve murmured. “You should be asking me to stay longer instead of sending me away, you know.”
“You’re invading my workplace.”
“Oh.” Eve picked up the food box and took the spoon. “Finish it fast before it loses its warmth.” She brought the spoon to his lips but he took it from her hand.
“Get me water.”
As Ethan ate his food silently on the couch, Eve went to the water dispenser and poured some into a cup.
“Here.” She sat beside him and gave it to him.
When he finished eating, Eve covered the food box and repackaged it. “Hehe, Ethan. You’ll come home very early tonight. There’s something I want to show you.”
Ethan didn’t answer her. He stood up and grabbed his phone, then strolled to his working desk.
“How about a goodbye kiss?” Eve followed him.
“I don’t have time for that. Go back home.” Ethan picked up a document from the desk and flipped through it.
“Urgh. Why do you make me feel like a desperate wife?” Eve spoke under her breath. She leaned down and pecked his left cheek before going back to the couch.
“Don’t forget to come home early,” she warned him while putting on one of the shoes beside the couch. She also took the one beside the glass wall and put it on before taking the food box.
On walking out of the office, Eve breathed out another sigh and shook her head.
‘Damni! Damnit! Eve. What was I thinking?’ Now she’d made Ethan mad. And that man was stubborn as it was.
She appeared in the employees’ area where the cubicles stood, and she sighted a slender figure not far ahead.
Jessie.
She’d better apologize to the girl.
Jessie’s back was to her, seemingly discussing something with the female colleague facing her. As Eve got near to where they stood, her once guilty smile instantly fell.
“The rumors weren’t false after all, it turns out Mr. Anderson doesn’t have a happy marriage.”
“Why did you say that, Jessie?” Her female colleague asked.
“Just now, I’ve seen the kind of person his wife is. Apart from having a bad temper, she’s also insecure. Hmph! She thought I was having a relationship with Mr. Anderson.”
“Ahhh.” The female colleague covered her mouth.
“I was lucky the heavens were with me today, if not, that vixen would have broken my head to pieces.”
“But Jessie, haven’t you always had eyes for the President? Maybe she suspects something.”
“She doesn’t. She’s just being insecure.” Jessie sounded confident. “And I think, from now on, things are gonna be much easy for me. No man can last with such a wife, I’d better step up my game and covet Mr. Anderson.”
“That’s risky. Remember the President isn’t interested in dating his employees.”
“Oh, but he’ll soon be. Remember I’m his secretary, and we spend most of the office hours together. Even if he’s a saint, I’m a hundred percent sure that he can’t resist me for long.”
Eve folded her hands and cleared her throat. “Well well well. Are all the employees in this company unprofessional? Apart from gossiping around, you even harbor dirty intentions toward your boss.”
“Ahhh! It’s Mrs. Anderson!” Screamed the lady. Her body trembled and she bowed rapidly before scurrying away, leaving Jessie standing there alone.
“Is it a crime to fantasize about the President?” Jessie turned around with a haughty look. “Besides, his wife doesn’t seem to be capable enough. Maybe we’ll be saving him by tending to his needs.”
Eve stared her down and chuckled. And here she was, thinking the girl was pitiful. Why was her gut instinct always right?
“Jessica or whatever you’re called. Here’s a little word of advice; whatever you’re cooking up in your mind right now, better get rid of it. Don’t even think of getting close to my husband with any intention apart from work.”
“I have had hidden intentions towards Mr. Anderson for a long time now. You’re too late to offer that advice. Mrs. Anderson, you have a foul temper, even your husband can’t stand you. A competition with me will do you no good.”
“A competition? Do you think you’re even worth it?” Eve scoffed. “As his legal wife, I’m already a thousand miles ahead of you. We sleep together, we eat together, we do everything together. Tell me which one of those things you’ve ever done with him.”
“Jessica, I know how hard it is to work and attain such a position in a great company like this. Don’t let your years of hard work be crushed down by this momentary attraction. Because if you try to covet my husband, I, Mrs. Anderson, won’t guarantee you your job.”
“You’re wrong.” Jessie folded her hands and smirked. “This momentary attraction will soon be permanent. And when I become the President’s wife, isn’t this position as his secretary only going to be a speck of dust in comparison.”
“Back off while you still have the chance, Jessica. Believe me, I’m not very nice when it comes to dealing with human beings like you.”
“Hehe, you don’t know me, Mrs. Anderson.” Jessie stepped forward. “And let me tell you one thing,” she whispered. “My flight landed yesterday, but I longed so much to communicate with your husband in the middle of the night. Do you know how many hours we spent chatting?”
Eve controlled her fists from flying to the girl’s face. It appeared she had underestimated this Jessica.
“What is happening? Eve, you’re still here?” The door to Ethan’s office opened, and his voice sounded behind her.
Eve was about to turn around when Jessie grabbed her hand. Then she staggered and fell back.
“Ahhh! Mrs. Anderson,” she sobbed. “I’ve told you there’s nothing going on between me and your husband. I swear I’m not lying. Please spare me from your anger, I worked so hard to get this job. D–Don’t make Mr. Anderson fire me!”
