Chapter 37: Master Driving Overnight

“Mrs. Anderson, you have to turn on the engine first before you start driving.”

“Mrs. Anderson, that’s not how you hold the steering wheel.”

“Mrs. Anderson, you’re not pressing on the accelerator.”

“The car is not moving, Mrs. Anderson.”

“No, Mrs. Anderson, your left not right.”

“Please focus on the road ahead, Mrs. Anderson.”

‘Urgh.’ Eve hit her forehead on the steering wheel and it beeped loudly. Her heart wanted to fly out of her chest and even her hands were shaking.

“Mrs. Anderson, can you please come out of the car?” Her instructor said.

Eve had been waiting to hear that all day. She jumped out of the car and took in a long drag of the fresh air. Very refreshing.

“Mrs. Anderson.” The instructor dragged her attention. “It has been more than one week and you cannot even hold the steering wheel properly yet. If the idea of driving doesn’t settle well with you, why don’t I inform Mr. Anderson to find you a solution.”

“Are you looking down on me, Jonah?” Eve took her handbag from the car. “Learning how to drive is not something one can master overnight. Just give me a bit more time, I’m sure I’ll get the hang of it soon.”

But even as she spoke, Eve wasn’t sure of her own statement. How was she going to get the hang of things soon when that image kept flashing in her mind?

The instant she entered the car, the memory of Ethan’s car losing control and falling off the mountain cliff automatically rewired back into her mind.

“But I’ve seen people master driving overnight, Mrs. Anderson. Yours is just a special case.”

“Jonah, do you still want your job?” Eve gave him a narrow look.

“O–Of course, Mrs. Anderson.” The guy chuckled and scratched his head.

“If so, don’t think of telling Ethan that I’m not improving. Whenever he asks about my progress, what should you tell him?”

“I’ll tell Mr. Anderson that you have been learning fast and can even drive with the speed of light.”

“That’s right.” Eve gave him a thumbs up. “Now drop me at Ethan’s company. It’s almost late anyways.”

“Whatever you say, Mrs. Anderson.” Jonah held the back seat door open for her and she went in.

After arriving at Ethan’s company, Eve left the car and squinted her eyes at the sun which had already turned orange and was about to slide down the horizon.

She bid the instructor goodbye and entered the company.

“Hi, Mrs. Anderson.”

“You’re looking great today, Mrs. Anderson.”

“Mrs. Anderson, would you care to have a look at the trending makeup set?”

“We came across new shades that are just perfect for your skin.”

“Hey, guys.” Eve waved at the employees after leaving the elevator. “Sure, I’d love to take a look.”

She lingered in the employees’ area for a while, checking out the makeup materials and also chatting now and then. When she was done, she headed for the president’s office. And on getting there, her eyes were met with Ethan’s glaring eyes.

“You are late.”

Eve dropped her bag on the couch and sat down. “Give me a break, Ethan. I just came back from my driving lesson. You could say something like how was my day, did I have a great time, what have I learned so far– anything but you’re late again.”

“You came back twenty minutes ago. Why do you keep distracting the employees, Eve?”

“Urgh. Can’t I make friends? You’re boring as it is, Ethan, and I’m afraid I’ll die of boredom if I don’t have other people to speak with.” Eve rested her back on the couch and faced the ceiling.

“Evelyn, this place is solely for work and not for making friends.”

“Yeah, yeah. I know. You’ve said that for like a thousand times already,” Eve said, her eyelids fluttering and the exhaustion weighing on her.

“Evelyn!” Ethan’s loud voice snapped her awake moments later. She didn’t even know when she fell asleep.

“What is it?” Eve rubbed her eyes and stared up at him.

Ethan dropped some documents on her and said, “Photocopy them.”

“Urgh!” Eve rolled her eyes. “Can’t you see I’m trying to sleep? Do it yourself.”

“Eve, you’re my secretary.”

“I know that.” Eve closed her eyes again. “But that doesn’t give you the right to overwork me.”

“Do you want to lose this job?” His voice resounded in her ears.

Eve sighed and groaned out loud. She sat up with difficulty and picked up the documents. “You, Ethan. You should at least let me rest for a while.”

Ethan went back to his desk and she headed to the photocopier which stood in a corner of the office.

After photocopying the documents, she trudged to his working desk and drop them. “Here, I’m done, Sir.” She glowered down at him.

“Make me coffee,” Ethan instructed and pushed the documents aside.

‘Urgh.’ Eve strolled to the coffee machine, yawning. She made a cup of coffee and brought it back to him.

“Too sweet.” Ethan tasted the coffee and spat it out. “Eve.” He glared at her. “Why haven’t you improved up till now?”

“Does one master how to make coffee overnight? Stop stressing me, Ethan.”

“I thought you said you were a straight-A student.” Ethan pushed the coffee cup aside and she picked it up.

“What if I was a straight-A? Ethan, you’re more difficult than the hardest maths problem. The coffee is only a bit sweeter than you like it, I’m sure you can manage.”

“Make another one.”

Eve scoffed and walked away. She made another one and he rejected it. And she continued walking back and forth, making cups of coffee. It was only after her tenth round that Ethan finally accepted the coffee.

“This is so so. I’m only going to manage it.”

“You could do that before stressing me.” Eve snickered and was about to walk back to the couch. But the door creaked open and long heels appeared.

She quickly turned around and darted for Ethan’s desk, then she jumped onto his lap after snatching the coffee cup and dropping it.

“Evelyn!” Ethan glared at her.
