Chapter 38: The Taxi Incident

“Come on, Honey. Stop it.” Eve tugged at his necktie while undoing his buttons with one hand. “Ah! Not here, Honey. At least, wait until we get home.” She buried her face in his neck and giggled nonstop.

The footsteps from the door stopped and something dropped on the floor.

“Eve, stop it,” Ethan said in a warning tone.

“Ah! Honey. Not the buttons. Leave my buttons alone. Stop it– Ah! Stop it.” She ruffled up his shirt as well as hers.

“S–Sir.” A trembling voice came from the door. “I– I think I should come back later.”

Eve glanced over her shoulder. Jessie stood by the door, her face green and her expression sour. She squatted down and picked up the documents from the floor.

“Oh, it is you, Jessie.” She faked a surprised look. “Come back come back. What brought you here?”

Jessie was about to head out of the office and she turned around, forcing a smile. “Sir.” She ignored Eve and looked at Ethan. “I brought this report from the finance department. Can you please have a look?”

“Let me see it–”

“A report from the finance department?” Eve put on a frown, cutting Ethan off. “Aren’t you supposed to report that to me, Jessie? As the President’s secretary, you have to pass through me first. You can’t just barge into this office. Aren’t I right, Sweetheart?” She glanced at Ethan.

Jessie’s knuckles turned bright as she gripped the documents. “Oh, I am sorry for the mistake. I– I’ll take that into account next time.”

“You have been working as the president’s secretary for a very long time, Jessie.” Eve got up from Ethan’s lap and dusted her skirt. “I have only spent a week here and I know the rules better than you. Tell me, didn’t all the managers report to you first when you were still the president’s secretary?”

Jessie avoided her eyes and stared down at the documents in her hands.

“I know what you’re up to, Jessica.” Eve stopped in front of her and whispered, “You don’t want to give up even now, huh? I told you I won’t be merciful twice, why do you keep pushing my buttons?”

Eve snatched the documents from her hands and went on. “Also, this is not the proper way to dress in the workplace. As a senior staff in this company, you should set a good example for the younger employees.”

“Mrs. Anderson.” Jessie stared straight at her. “I thought this was supposed to be a fair competition. Why do you keep using your liberty as the president’s wife to push me to the wall? Besides, your dress can’t be called decent either.”

Eve’s eyes followed the girl’s and she stared at the few undone buttons of her shirt.

“Oh, this.” She smiled sweetly. “This is because I was having a good time with my husband before you interrupted us, Jessie. And let me make things clear.” She shook her head. “I’ve told you from the start that you don’t stand a competition with me. I am his wife, and you are now his– nothing. So do yourself a favor and put an end to those fantasies.”

“Mrs. Anderson.” Jessie’s eyes reddened. “Your threats won’t work on me. And as long as I’m alive, even if you send me out of this company, I’ll keep chasing after your husband. And be careful, because not only you can bite.”

Jessie flipped her hair then she turned around and walked out of the office, while Eve scoffed and rolled her eyes.

“What were you two talking about?” She dropped the documents on Ethan’s desk and he asked.

“Just some girl stuff,” Eve answered, redoing her shirt’s buttons. “Now don’t disturb me, Ethan. If you need anything, do it yourself. And let me have my beauty sleep.”

Eve was about to turn for the couch but Ethan caught her hand.

“Where do you think you are going?”

“Huh?”

“Come and finish what you started.”

“Hehe, Ethan. J–Just let me go. I’m sleepy– Ah!” Ethan dragged her forward and she ended up on his lap, colliding with his chest.

‘Urgh.’ That beasty Ethan.

Eve staggered into the house after work. And to think that he had ditched her on their way back to the Villa by making an excuse of meeting up with a very important client.

“Go to sleep early. Don’t wait for me.”

That was what he had told her. As if she was going to wait for him.

“I’m so tired, Elena.” Eve fell into the Stewardess’s arms and hugged her.

“Oh my goodness, Madam. Is the Young Master overworking you? Is he being a cruel boss?”

“More than that.” Eve wiped her imaginary tears.

“Now now, take it easy, Madam.” Elena rubbed her back. “It is not too late to back out of the job. Just let him know that you no longer want to be his secretary.”

And let him take that Jessica back? Not a chance. Maybe when her driving lessons ended, the stress would reduce.

“Argh!”

“Madam.” Elena was frantic. “What is wrong? Is anything else bothering you?”

Eve shook her head and sniffed. If only there was a magic potion she could take to become an expert driver in one night. “Please get me my orange juice, Elena. I’m famished.”

Elena left for the kitchen while Eve trudged upstairs to the bedroom, her hands holding tight to the railing.

She took a quick bath and without having the energy to walk into the closet, she slumped down on the bed in her bathrobe.

“Your orange juice is here, Madam.” Elena entered the room, holding a tray. She settled the tray on the bedside table and picked up the juice glass.

Eve sat up on the bed, leaning against the headboard and she took the juice from the Stewardess’s hand.

“Dinner is almost ready. I’ve told the girls to speed up.”

“Oh.” Eve drank the juice and gave the now empty glass back. “Thank you, Elena.”

Her hand wandered to her bag after Elena left, and she brought out her phone that just started ringing.

“Who is it?” Eve lay down on her stomach and murmured.

“Am I speaking with Mrs. Anderson?” The strange male voice said.

“Uhuh.” Eve nodded, holding back a yawn. “Who am I speaking with?”

“A friend.” The voice answered. “I have an important piece of news to share with you. Can we meet up at your convenience, Mrs. Anderson?”

“What news?” Eve covered her mouth to suppress another yawn.

“You were almost hit by a car the other day. It is no surprise that someone must be behind it. I have evidence to back up my claim, Mrs. Anderson.”

The taxi incident?

Eve sat up and rubbed her eyes. “Who are you and how did you know?”

“Where can we meet, Mrs. Anderson?”
