The President's Daring Wife
Chapter 40: Are You Seeking Death
Chapter 42
Ethan’s thundering voice from the other end made Eve lose her grip on the phone. Her phone slid down her hand and hit the car floor hard.
She reached down for it with trembling hands and checked the screen. It was intact. But the call was disconnected.
Did Ethan hang up?
Eve shuddered again. The tone of his voice still sent tremors down her nerves. What did she do this time? Was she in trouble?
“Ma’am, what is your destination?” The taxi driver asked.
“Th– The Heavenly Garden Villa,” Eve answered.
She’d be damned to go to Ethan’s company today. She wouldn’t even know what killed her. Ethan sounded like he would murder someone.
The taxi took her to the residential area where the Villa stood, and Eve paid him then rushed into the house.
“Madam, you’re back early.” One of the maids received her at the door. “Did you return with the Young Master?”
Eve shook her head. “Hide me, Camila.” She held the girl’s hands. “Where is Elena and Dinah? Please hide me.”
“M–Madam, are you alright?” The maid looked worried. “They’re in the servants’ quarters, Madam. Would you like me to get them?”
“N–No. Hide me there. Take me to your quarters.”
“A–Alright.” The maid nodded hesitantly, and Eve followed her to the back of the Villa where the servants’ quarters stood.
“What should we tell the Young Master when he comes back, Madam?” Dinah asked.
“Madam, if you did something to offend the Young Master, the best thing you should do is face him and apologize,” Elena advised.
Eve sat on the bed in one of the maids’ rooms and wiped her face. The problem was, she didn’t even know what she did. How could she apologize for something she didn’t know?
“It is getting late, Madam. And the Young Master might arrive soon.” Elena sat beside her. “You can’t hide in here forever, and if you don’t face him early, I think things might get worse.”
“Please bear with me, Elena. Let me gather my thoughts,” Eve pleaded.
“Alright, we’ll leave you alone. Please don’t be too hard on yourself. If you need anything, call our attention.”
Elena left with the girls, and Eve stared at the ceiling, pressing a hand on her forehead. ‘Argh! That Ethan.’
She was frustrated enough by that stupid Cole and this new man that seemed like a pervert. Did he want her to develop a heart attack or what?
Eve brought out her phone and looked at it. Ethan did not call her again. She scrolled through her contacts list and stopped at her father’s number.
“Dad.” The call was immediately answered from the other end. “I– I need your help with something, please. That guy from the party keeps disturbing me. Would you help me take care of him?”
“Evelyn, are you alright?” Her father sounded busy. “Which guy are you talking about?”
“That guy with Mia,” Eve answered. “A few days back, he sent a taxi driver to hit me. I’ll send you some pictures, Dad. Please help me investigate.”
“Alright, Evelyn. Do that immediately.”
“Thanks, Dad.” Eve was about to hang up but her father’s voice came again.
“Evelyn.” He sounded confused. “You don’t sound good. Are you sure you’re alright?”
“Sure, Dad. I’m fine.” Eve forced herself to laugh. “Erhm, I’m hanging up, Dad. I’ll send those pictures now.” She bid him goodbye and hung up.
After that, she reached for those photos in her bag and took a snapshot of each one before sending them to her father.
Eve dropped the phone on the bed as well as those photos, and her eyes strayed to the ceiling.
“Madam Madam, the Young Master is back.” Camila barged into the room and her frantic voice made Eve jump off the bed.
“E–Ethan is back? Did he ask of me?” Eve asked, her chest hammering.
“No, Madam. His car just arrived. What if he asks? What should I tell him?”
Eve paced in the room, biting her fingers. She didn’t want to meet Ethan. She didn’t want to see him. ‘Argh’ that man was creeping her out.
“Camila.” She paused and held the girl’s shoulders. “No matter what happens, don’t tell him that I’m here, okay?”
“B–But, Madam–”
“Promise me, Camila. Please don’t tell Ethan that I’m here.”
The maid lowered her head and hesitated before nodding. “Please be careful, Madam. We might all get into trouble if the Young Master finds out we’re hiding you in here.”
Eve fumbled with her blouse, feeling guilty. “Don’t worry, I won’t let anything happen to you. You won’t get into any trouble, okay?”
The maid sighed and nodded, then she turned around and left.
Eve sank onto the bed and groaned. Her phone’s ringtone ripped through the atmosphere and her heart jolted in fright.
She picked up the phone and blinked at the display name. Ethan. Should she answer it?
Eve put the phone down and stood up then started pacing again. The phone rang once more and Ethan’s name flashed on the screen. She sat down and picked up the phone but dropped it.
‘Evelyn! Where are you?’ His message popped up on the screen.
‘Come back home right now, Evelyn! Your punishment might be less.’
Eve sniffed back her imaginary tears and stared at the two messages. Then another one popped up.
‘The security man told me that you’re home, Evelyn! Where are you hiding? Come out!’
“Ah!” Eve yelped and sprang up. Ethan asked the security man. That meant it was only a matter of time before he investigated the maids. And how was she going to bail them out?
Despite reassuring the maid, Eve had no slightest clue about how she was going to extricate herself from Ethan’s wrath.
Maybe she should bravely face up to whatever he had in store for her. She couldn’t afford to put the servants in trouble. And if Ethan dared to make her unhappy, he might as well face his own punishment.
Eve dusted her dress and headed for the door. She held the doorknob and heavy footsteps sounded from the hallway.
Who was it?
Eve paused before taking in a deep breath. Then she pulled the door open, and she bumped into Ethan on stepping out.
“Evelyn! Are you seeking death?”
