Chapter 44: I’m The Right Man For You

“It’s you again.”

“It’s you again.”

Mia and Cole said at the same time.

The man walked toward where Eve stood with Ethan, and he stood beside her.

“It is me, yes.” He glanced at Cole and Mia. “And I have come here, not to waste my time on you two insignificant people, but to actually see you.” His gaze strayed to Eve.

“Eve.” Wade brought a device out from his pants pocket and showed it to her. “I forgot to give you this at the coffee shop. I guess we were both carried away.”

“This man again,” Ethan said in a low tone. “Evelyn–”

“It– It isn’t what you’re thinking, Ethan.” Eve quickly shook her head. “Mr. Hudson, I thought you would respect my request and never stalk me again. Why did you come here?”

“Ah! Evelyn. You’re really something.” Mia folded her hands and scoffed. “So this man is in collusion with you. It’s no wonder, he stood up for you that night.”

“I can see that you have found another man, Evelyn. You now claim that Mr. Anderson is enough for you, but I don’t see it that way. And instead of me that you have been forcing several times in the past, it seems like this man is more than willing.”

“Who is this person, Evelyn?” Her father asked. “He was present at the party that night.”

“Don’t listen to them, Dad.” Eve looked from her father to Ethan. “Mr. Hudson and I have only met a few times. We are nothing but strangers.”

“Who are you trying to fool!” Mia shouted. “I knew it! I always knew it! Eve, you wanted to destroy me and Cole by using this man, right? Mr. Hudson or whatever he is called must be your new lover.”

“Watch your tone while you speak to my daughter, Mia. This isn’t how I raised you.”

“Everyone, please calm down. This is the police station, you are disturbing the other occupants here,” the female staff said.

“Mrs. Anderson.” She turned to Eve. “Please comply and put forth your hands. We don’t want any drama here. If your family wants to fight, let them take it somewhere else.”

“Wait a minute, Officer.” Wade stepped between Eve and the lady. “You can’t apprehend her yet. Didn’t you want solid evidence?”

“Unfortunately, Mrs. Anderson doesn’t have one.” The female officer replied. “So, Mister, please step out of my way.”

“That’s not happening.” Wade shook his head then turned to Eve. He took her hand and placed the device on it. “Eve, it’s my fault. We were too carried away at the coffee shop, I forgot to give you this last piece of evidence.”

Eve gave him a skeptical look before her eyes went to the device. “Mr. Hudson, what is this?”

“Play it.”

Eve pressed the only button on the device. It appeared to be a recorder. In the next second, two loud voices played in the room.

‘You are so useless, Man. I told you to go straight at her.’ That was Cole’s voice.

‘I did my best, Mr. Nathan, I swear I almost smashed her. But someone came in the way and pulled her aside, I had to press on the brakes immediately.’ That was the taxi driver’s voice.

‘Shit! Damnit! I told you she must die! She must die! And that was your only chance. What if she never comes out again!?’ Cole sounded furious.

‘Well, we can only hope that Mrs. Anderson goes out again. We might be successful next time. I assure you, Mr. Nathan, even if someone pulls her aside, I will follow her and smash her to pieces.’

‘Damnit!’

‘Mr. Nathan, about my payment.’

‘Who said you’re getting any payment?’

‘But you promised me a million dollars, Mr. Nathan.’

‘Well, did you carry out your job? Get out of my sight, you stupid man! And don’t even think I’ll hire you next time. I’m going to find someone more competent. That Evelyn must die, and I’ll make sure of it!’

As Cole and the taxi driver’s voices continued playing in the room, everyone stared at the voice recorder in Eve’s hand in silence.

Cole’s eyes and mouth were wide with shock. The taxi driver trembled from where he sat. And Mia looked as pale as a white sheet.

“This is the last piece of evidence, Officer.” Wade turned to the officer when the voices stopped playing. “I recorded it at the same time I took those photos. But I forgot to give them to Eve because we were occupied by something else. Now, what are you going to do about these two lunatics.”

“Well.” The male officer step forward and the female officer dropped the handcuff and retreated. “Since that is what happened, I’m afraid that Mrs. Anderson’s claims are right, now that the evidence is complete.”

“No! Don’t listen to them, Officer,” Mia exclaimed. “They made it all up, I swear. Evelyn and this man have something going between them. He’s obviously her new lover. All this is a lie.”

“No one asked you to speak, Young Lady. Please this is the police station.” The police officer stared down at Mia. “Mr. Nathan.” He faced Cole. “The evidence is now complete, and we found you guilty. It is now obvious that you harbor ill intentions towards Mrs. Anderson who is an innocent citizen. As the authority, we’ll have to make sure this never repeats itself by putting you behind bars. Both you and this taxi driver are a threat to her life. And until Mrs. Anderson says so, we won’t allow you to be bailed out.”

“This is a lie, Officer. This is all made up!” Cole yelled. “Are you going to listen to them and this stupid recording? Please investigate Mrs. Anderson and this new man. Something is going on between them.”

“If anything is going on between them, it is none of your concern, Mr. Nathan. Please comply and put forth your hands. You have a reputation to maintain and we won’t tolerate any trouble.” The officer took the handcuff from the female officer and held it forward.

“No, this is a lie. I won’t let you arrest me! Evelyn, You’re going to pay for this!”

“This is too cruel of you, Eve!” Mia balled her fists. “Tell them to let him go!”

Two more officers approached and held Cole in place, while the first officer handcuffed him.

“How can I tell them to let him go, Mia?” Eve shook her head. “So that he will keep chasing after my life? Not a chance. You’re right, the innocent are always victorious and karma is so sweet.”

“Y–You, Eve! You’re going to regret this!”

“I’m already regretting associating with your types in the past, Mia. Cole will get what he deserves. With his temper, he’s a threat to all the innocent people out there.”

The policemen took Cole and the taxi driver away, while Mia screamed and went after them.

“Someone, throw this mad lady out,” the senior officer commanded and the female officer took hold of Mia and threw her out.

Eve’s father sighed heavily and walked forward. “Mr. Hudson, thank you for providing this last piece of evidence. Please take care of yourself, Evelyn. Mr. Anderson, I expect you to protect her more often.” Her father bid her goodbye and left the station.

“Don’t worry about that, Mr. Maxwell,” Wade called after the man. “I will take very good care of your daughter and make sure no danger comes to her.”

“Eve.” He attempted to hold her hand and Eve stepped aside.

“Please it is Mrs. Anderson, Mr. Hudson. And although I appreciate your help, I expect you to stop following me.”

“Why are you speaking this way, Eve.” Wade dropped both hands in his pockets and smiled. “It’s alright, I understand that you’re shy because Mr. Anderson is here. He can’t even protect you, Eve. Let me tell you, I’m the right man for you.”

“Mr. Hudson, watch your tone,” Eve warned. “I won’t tolerate such words from your mouth.”

“It’s alright, Eve. I won’t force you. Whenever you change your mind, you know how to find me. And I hope Mr. Anderson will be man enough to engage in a fair competition. I have eyes for your wife, and I hope she’ll be mine, soon.”

Wade and Ethan exchanged a heated glare while Eve’s heart pounded rapidly. She held her breath, waiting for the two to break into a fight.

But Wade finally looked away and he winked at her before sauntering out of the place.

“E–Ethan.” Eve hesitated before looking at the man. “Don’t listen to him–”

“Ah! Ethan, wait!” Ethan grabbed her arm and dragged her out of the place.
