Chapter 43: Her Karma

Eve sat in the passenger seat of Ethan’s car, hoping more than anything to disappear.

“You still won’t say anything, huh?” Ethan gripped the steering wheel, his knuckles bright. “Evelyn, if you dare cause any trouble this time–”

“I– I didn’t cause any trouble, I swear. It’s just a matter related to the taxi incident.”

“The taxi incident again.” Ethan glanced sideways, his anger increasing. “How many things are you hiding from me, Eve? Why are you needed at the police custody?”

Eve grimaced and looked out of the window.

They arrived at the police station several minutes later, and she hurried out of the car but Ethan came to her side and gripped her hand.

“Stop it, Ethan. I didn’t do anything wrong. And you’ll find out in a moment.” Eve wriggled her hand free and gave him a helpless look.

Ethan gave her a skeptical look. She followed him into the station and they met her father sitting on a waiting chair.

On another chair sat the taxi driver who was handcuffed. While Cole stood in a corner, discussing with a policeman.

Eve hesitated before looking at Ethan. His eyes were on Cole and he looked furious.

“There you are, Evelyn.” Her father sighted her and he stood up and approached them. “That boy claims that he has nothing to do with it. He said he just happened to know the taxi driver. And the taxi driver also claims the same.”

“Mrs. Anderson.” The policeman approached them. “Everyone knows there’s a feud between you and Mr. Nathan. But you can’t bring up such accusations without clear evidence.”

“But you have the evidence,” Eve answered the policeman. “Dad, didn’t you show them those photos?”

“I showed him the photos, Eve.”

“Yes, he showed us the photos,” the policeman added. “But that isn’t enough evidence to apprehend Mr. Nathan. As you’ve heard, Mr. Nathan just happens to know this taxi driver.”

“I know what you’re aiming at, Eve.” Cole smirked and folded his hands. “You have even resorted to having people stalk me because you can no longer have me. Is this your way of seeking my attention?”

“Watch what you’re saying, Cole. I know you had a hand in that incident, and this taxi driver here is working for you.”

“What is going on here, Eve?” Ethan’s low voice sounded beside her.

“What incident are you talking about?” Cole put on a confused look. “Just because your people saw me with this man doesn’t give you the right to point fingers at me. And let me tell you, no matter what you do to seek my attention, Mia will forever remain the only woman in my heart.”

“Mrs. Anderson,” the policeman spoke up. “Without proper evidence, I’m afraid we can’t do anything to Mr. Nathan and this taxi driver only based on those photos. This is a police station and not a relationship counseling center. If you’re seeking ways to mend your relationship with Mr. Nathan, please don’t involve us in it.”

“Relationship my foot. I have evidence of course. What about the call you made me threatening my life before the taxi driver came straight at me? Isn’t it too coincidental, Mr. Nathan?”

“What call are you talking about?” Cole put on a frown. “You see, Officer, this woman is full of treachery. Now she is talking about a phone call. Why would I call you when I don’t even want to be near you? You can check my call logs, Officer. I never communicated with Mrs. Anderson.”

“Ma’am.” The taxi driver stared at her from where he sat. “I thought you said you forgave me that day. Why are you involving me in your relationship scandal? I have a family to feed and many people to look after, please don’t make my life miserable. Mr. Nathan is someone that I know, and we had a little bit of misunderstanding, that’s why we were fighting in that photo you took. Don’t use that to cause any trouble for us, please I beg of you, Ma’am.”

“Evelyn.” Eve’s father held her shoulders. “I believe you, and I know if this boy is influenced by Mia, he can do unimaginable things. But if we don’t have more solid evidence, I don’t think we can do anything.”

“But he called me with a private number, Dad. He said words like if he killed me then, was he being merciful. I can remember everything he said, Dad.”

“You don’t even blink while you lie.” Cole chuckled. “I can’t take this anymore, Officer. And for wasting my time and pointing false accusations at me, I’d appreciate it if you apprehend Mrs. Anderson and teach her a lesson.”

The sound of high heels came from the entrance and Mia trotted in and fell into Cole’s arms.

“What is going on, Cole? Why did you call me here?”

“It is because of this bitch!” Cole pointed at Eve. “She still won’t get off my back, Babe. And now, she’s involving her family and the police.”

“You, Evelyn.” Mia glared at her. “Why don’t you leave him alone, already? Didn’t you claim that you’re now all over your husband? You said you don’t care if I’m miserable, but from the looks of it, you’re so keen on your mission to make me more miserable.”

“Watch your mouth, Mia. Don’t lay false accusations on my daughter.”

“So what if she turns out to be your real daughter? It doesn’t give you the right to gang up against Cole. You claim I’m the one with bad manners, but your daughter is so stupid that you had to beg Mr. Anderson to marry her. Even my Cole doesn’t want her, is that my fault?”

“Mia, you’ve gone too far. I raised you for thirteen years, how dare you talk back at me?”

“Well, you’re not my father!” Mia yelled. “And I’m very happy about that! I’m so happy to get the opportunity to leave that family that doesn’t know anything but hypocritic rules.”

“Evelyn.” Eve’s father turned to her. “Maybe we should let this matter go and let karma do its job. Since we don’t have enough evidence, they will keep on denying it.”

“Eve.” Ethan squeezed her hand, tight. “Why didn’t you tell me about all this?”

Eve glared at Cole and Mia, struggling to control her anger. Mia snickered and Cole shook his head, smiling.

“You are letting this matter go, Mr. Maxwell.” Cole stepped forward and said, “But I won’t let it go. Mrs. Anderson has attempted to taint my reputation which is an unforgivable act. I hope the officers will help me fight for my right by putting her behind bars.”

“Evelyn.” Mia stared at her in contempt. “You aren’t gonna escape this time. You see how karma works, right? The innocent will always be victorious at the end of the day.”

“You’re right.” Eve gave her a small smile. “The innocent will always be victorious. That means your karma is also coming your way, Mia.”

“Mrs. Anderson.” A female officer approached her and held out a handcuff. “Mr. Nathan is pressing a charge against you. And since you don’t have solid evidence to back up your accusation, I’m afraid to tell you that Mr. Nathan is right, which means you’ll have to be put behind bars for attempting to taint his reputation. So please follow me.”

“She is not going anywhere with you.” Ethan pulled Eve behind him.

“I was the one that brought the report, Officer. You don’t have the right to apprehend my daughter.”

“I am just doing my job, Mr. Maxwell. You can bail her out later if Mr. Nathan agrees. Please don’t give us a hard time, Mr. Anderson.”

“Who said she doesn’t have solid evidence?”

A voice came from the entrance and everyone looked in that direction.

Eve’s lips parted, her eyes widening, and she could feel Ethan’s grip on her hand tightening.
