The President's Daring Wife
Chapter 66: I’m Pregnant
Chapter 68
Eve barged into the study room, her heart pounding and her body shaking.
The three people in the room looked at her. Her grandfather and father looked enraged, and Ethan’s eyes flashed with confusion.
“Evelyn, good thing you’re here. Why didn’t you tell us anything, you silly girl?” Her grandfather gave her a disapproving look.
“You went through that and you hid it from us. Poor girl, did you think we won’t stand up for you?” Her father walked forward and hugged her.
“D–Dad, Grandpa. A divorce?” Eve pulled away, her eyes going to Ethan.
“Yes, Evelyn!” Her grandfather nodded. “I am at fault for forcing you into this marriage. If I wasn’t great friends with his grandfather, I wouldn’t have agreed to that.”
“Evelyn.” Her father pulled her attention. “You were greatly wronged, and we feel responsible. Don’t worry, such things will never happen again. You will not see him anymore. After the divorce, I’ll even take you out of this city.”
“Ah! No, Dad!” Eve gasped and hurried to where Ethan stood.
Why was this happening? In her past life, it was Ethan’s grandfather that separated them. Why was it her family this time?
“Eve.” Ethan took her hands, staring down at her. “We can’t get a divorce,” he said softly.
“O–Of course not.” Eve quickly shook her head. In her past life, Ethan became so miserable after the divorce. If the same thing happened again, wouldn’t it turn out worse?
Even now, she could see the reluctance in his eyes.
“Grandpa, Dad.” Eve looked away from Ethan. “Our misunderstanding hasn’t reached that point. Please don’t make us divorce?”
“But he treated you that way, Evelyn,” her father scolded. “He treated you as if you are nothing but a frivolous girl.”
“This has never happened to any of my grandchildren before. Their husbands cherish them like treasures. I have failed you, Evelyn, but let Grandpa make up for it.”
“No no, Grandpa. Please don’t do that,” Eve shook her head, her eyes widening. “I am sure Ethan has learned his lesson, right, Ethan?” She lifted her head and Ethan nodded.
“This will never happen again, I promise.” Ethan squeezed her hands.
“But it won’t change the fact that it has happened already.” Her grandfather stood his ground. “We can’t be a hundred percent sure that you won’t repeat it. Everyone knows how tough you were in the military. I should have known you would treat my granddaughter with iron fists.”
“Grandfather.” Ethan let go of Eve’s hands and faced the Old Man. “I am sorry for doing that to her. Please believe me, it won’t happen again.”
“I don’t trust your temper, Young Man. If you’re anything like your grandfather, you can repeat something worse.”
“Grandpa, please believe him.” Eve held Ethan’s arm. “We love each other so much, I know Ethan only did that out of jealousy.”
“She’s right,” Ethan agreed. “I will do anything to protect her, Grandfather. Eve will no longer be unhappy if you let her return with me.”
“Evelyn, why are you taking his side?” Her grandfather pointed his cane at her. “You can’t predict the future, and you can’t be sure if he’s telling the truth.”
“Evelyn.” Her father pulled her away from Ethan. “You’re not the first woman that will get a divorce. Don’t worry, we are going to find you a man that will take good care of you.”
“No, Dad. Grandpa.” Eve looked from them to Ethan. “Please don’t separate us, I beg of you.”
She was given this second chance to build a strong relationship with Ethan. Why did her biggest obstacle turn out to be her family?
“Stop begging us, Evelyn. We’re only doing this for your own good.” Her grandfather shook his head and said.
“We are only saving you future emotional damage.” Her father added. “You will thank us later, My Dear. Mr. Anderson can be the richest young man in this city, but wealth is nothing compared to happiness.”
‘Argh!’ Eve wanted to scream out loud. She wanted to pull out her hair. Why was this happening?
“Ethan, do something.” She looked toward him with teary eyes. Ethan looked more downcast. Was he giving up already?
“Father-in-law, Grandfather–”
Ethan stepped forward but her grandfather halted him.
“Nothing you say will ever change our mind, Young Man. I will look for you grandfather myself. You can wait for the divorce papers and put in your signature.”
“But Grandfather–”
“That’s enough. I won’t talk any longer, you have already succeeded in heightening my blood pressure.”
Ethan dropped his hands and sighed heavily, and Eve covered her mouth.
“Ah! Grandpa, wait!?” She hurried up to the old man and knelt in front of him as he was about to leave the study room.
“What are you doing, Evelyn? Stand up this instant!”
“No, Grandpa!” Eve covered her eyes and sobbed. “Y–You can’t do this to us… If you separate me from Ethan, how is our baby going to survive?”
“Evelyn, what do you mean by that?” Her father came to her side and squatted down. “Are you pregnant?”
“Uhuh.” Eve slowly nodded. “At first, I wanted it to be a surprise. But I can’t bear to be separated from Ethan, Grandpa. Our baby will be heartbroken to know that its parents are divorced.”
“Eve.” Ethan was instantly by her side and he pulled her up. “Are you… Are you…” He seemed speechless.
“Are you really pregnant, Evelyn?” Her grandfather broke out of his shock.
“Yes, Grandpa.” Eve bit her lips then hugged him. “So you have to go back on your decision. I want to take care of my baby together with Ethan.”
Her grandfather pulled away and scrutinized her body. “I should have noticed earlier. When did you find out, Evelyn.” His face broke into a smile.
“Just recently, Grandpa.” Eve ducked her head and tucked a stray strand behind her ear.
“You just found out recently, Evelyn.” Her father laughed and patted her head. “You silly girl. I can’t wait to break this news to your mother and sisters.”
Her father turned around and walked out, leaving Eve standing between her grandfather and Ethan.
“Since that’s the case.” Her grandfather went to his chair and sat down. “I will have some mercy. But you must bring your grandfather here and seek an apology,” he said to Ethan.
Ethan finally looked away from Eve and nodded promptly. “I will do that, Grandfather. Thank you.”
“Don’t thank me.” The old man chuckled. “Thank Evelyn’s unborn child.”
As Eve left the study room with Ethan, she collapsed into his arms and breathed out a long sigh of relief.
“Eve.” Ethan’s soft voice reached her ears and he placed a hand on her stomach. “Are you really pregnant?”
“Huh?” Eve lifted her head and blinked.
