The President's Daring Wife
Chapter 65: A Divorce
Chapter 67
“Evelyn, you’re back.”
When Eve got back to the mansion, the family was already having dinner.
“Big Sis, you came back.”
“We thought you’d gone back home, Big Sis. We were disappointed not to find you after returning from school.”
“Didn’t I promise to spend some time with you?” Eve smiled and sat on a chair. “I won’t just go back on my words, you know.”
Her father looked up from his food and squinted his eyes. “Evelyn, are you sure nothing is going on? You’ve been here for three days straight.”
“Come on, Dad, are you fed up with me already?” Eve put on an offended look. “Nothing is wrong, I promise.”
“You– Evelyn.” Her father shifted on his chair. “I don’t trust this look on your face. This is the exact look your mother gives me whenever she does something wrong and she tries to hide it.”
“Big Sis, are you sure you’re alright?” Her sisters looked shocked. “Don’t tell us you have a problem with brother-in-law.”
“Urgh, guys, come on.” Eve sighed and quickly finished up her food.
“Evelyn.” Her grandfather called out as she stood up. “Are you sure you’re not hiding something from us?”
“Grandpa, don’t think that way.” She walked to him and gave him a quick hug. “Haven’t I told you I only stayed because I missed you a lot?”
“I am very happy about that.” Her grandfather laughed. “But, Evelyn.” He gave her a stern look. “Even though you missed your family, you can’t spend a long time away from your husband. I’m sure he’ll miss you more than we do.”
“It’s only a few days, Grandpa. Ethan will not miss me, besides, we see each other at work.”
“Evelyn, I think what Father is trying to say is your husband will miss you because–”
“Argh! I get it, Dad.” Eve covered her ears. “Can’t you save me some face?”
“There’s nothing to be shy about. You’ve been married for several months now, Evelyn, and we haven’t heard any good news yet.”
“Dad is right, Big Sis. When are you going to get pregnant?”
“Is brother-in-law not working hard enough?”
“Girls!” Eve exclaimed. “Of course, we’re working hard. It’s just– It’s just…” She trailed off as her mood instantly plummeted.
At this time in her past life, Eve was already at the hospital suffering from the abortion pills effects.
What did she do wrong this time? Ethan only slept with her once in her past life and she fell pregnant. However, now…
“Urgh!” Eve pulled at her hair as she went up to her room. She fell on the bed and buried her face in the pillow, groaning.
After taking her bath and getting ready, she sat on the bed and brought out her phone. Another alert message from Ethan. How many times had he sent her money already?
Eve scrolled through the messages and counted her fingers. Fifty. That man was really going to go bankrupt if he didn’t stop.
She searched for the bank’s customer care contact and dialed it. After providing her account info, she went ahead to inquire if she could block him from sending money into her account.
Eve got a not-so-thrilling reply. She’d have to go through a long process that would also involve the other party. She tossed the phone beside her on the bed after hanging up and groaned out loud.
Eve tossed and turned on the bed as the alert messages kept flooding in, invading her sleep. She turned off her phone in the end then finally fell asleep.
“Big Sis! Big Sis!”
One of the twins woke her up the next morning and Eve forced her eyes open. Cassie sat beside her on the bed and pulled her up.
“Big Sis, can you believe who is here?”
“Who?” Eve rubbed her eyes and stared at the girl’s lab coat.
“It is brother-in-law, Big Sis. He’s discussing with Grandpa.”
“Ethan?” Eve sprang to her feet. “What is he doing here?”
“I don’t know, Big Sis.” Cassie stood up also. “But last night when you left the dining table, Grandpa and Dad didn’t appear to believe what you said. Maybe it’s Grandpa that called him.”
Eve stilled for a few seconds. She broke out of her shock and her eyes widened.
“Cassie, do you know what they’re talking about?” She turned to the girl and asked.
Cassie shook her head, gripping the straps of her backpack. “They’re in Grandpa’s study room, Big Sis. You can go check it out.”
Eve followed her out of the room and they walked into the other twin.
“Big Sis, brother-in-law is so handsome especially in home clothes. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw him.”
Ethan came in his home clothes. But it was still early, he wouldn’t have even gone to the company at this time.
Eve bid the girls goodbye as they left for school, and she proceeded to her grandfather’s study room.
When she reached the study room, the door was tightly shut. Eve leaned against it and carefully placed her ear on it, her heart pounding.
The voices inside were indistinct at first, but her grandfather’s voice was more prominent.
“Tell me the truth. Is something going on between you and my granddaughter that we should be aware of? Evelyn came here looking downcast. That girl never even cried before, but she did that easily on seeing me sick.”
“She has been staying here for three days straight. The confusing thing is, you didn’t care to show up.” That was her father’s voice.
“Did you do anything to make my granddaughter unhappy?”
“No, Grandfather. Eve and I just had some misunderstanding.”
“What kind of misunderstanding? Why wouldn’t she open up about it?”
Ethan remained silent.
“We are waiting for your answer. Why is it that my granddaughter didn’t say anything about it?”
Eve shut her eyes and gulped. She had really underestimated her grandfather. And as Ethan narrated everything that happened to them, sounding downcast, Eve’s heart dropped to her stomach.
“That is what happened!?” Her grandfather boomed. “How dare you do that to my granddaughter!?”
“Mr. Anderson.” Her father sounded mad too. “We know the kind of training we gave our daughter. How could you accuse her of sleeping with another man and even make her go through that?”
“You not only humiliated her, but this family as well,” her grandfather bellowed. “When you came here with your grandfather, begging us to marry her to you, we didn’t think twice before fulfilling your wish.”
‘Huh?’ Ethan asked for her hand? Eve pressed her ear to the door. Why would he do that, they didn’t even know each other.
And all this time, she’d been thinking their arranged marriage was for business collaboration between the two families.
“You have greatly hurt my daughter, Mr. Anderson. We thought you loved her.”
“Since Evelyn no longer wants to see you.” Her grandfather added. “I will look for your grandfather and we will proceed with your divorce.”
‘A divorce!?’ Her breath caught up in her throat and her pupils expanded.
