Chapter 68: I Will Do Anything For You

“Calm down, Eve.” Ethan held her in place and made her stand properly. They both barged into the study room and met the two old men engaged in a glaring contest.

“Grandpa, what’s going on?” Eve looked from her grandfather to Ethan’s grandfather. Of course, she didn’t need to be told what was going on.

“It is this old man. Can you believe he doesn’t want to apologize, Evelyn? He is even backing up his grandson’s misconduct.”

“Nonsense! That is not misconduct. If you were in his position, you would have done the same,” Ethan’s grandfather hollered. “Did they give you a hard time, Grandson?” He faced Ethan. “If this Old Man doesn’t want to give you back your wife, I say we should leave here and find you another girl immediately.”

“Ah, Grandpa!” Eve rushed to him and tugged at his arm. “Don’t do this to us. Ethan and I love each other. Separating us is like sentencing us to death.”

“Shut up, Silly girl. How could you spend a night with another man! Isn’t my grandson enough for you?”

“You are making it seem like my granddaughter ran off with that man.” Eve’s grandfather pulled her to his side. “While everyone knows in this city that your grandson has the highest number of employees as females. Tell me, Old Man, is he someone to trust?”

“If only females are competent for the job, why can’t he hire them? I raised my grandson to be righteous and uptight. You can’t lay such accusations on him.”

“And I also raised my granddaughter to be a pious woman. Old man, you have gone too far. This family will not tolerate such nonsense!”

“If you are keen on making my grandson apologize, our friendship ends here today. Your granddaughter should be apologizing for leaving home without her husband’s knowledge and also spending a night with another man.”

“Ah! Ethan, do something.” Eve hurried to where Ethan stood and pulled at his arm.

“Evelyn, stay away from that boy!” Her grandfather thundered.

“Grandson, leave her alone. This silly girl has gone too far. She even promised to give me great-grandchildren, I guess her words were just to fool me.”

“But I’m pregnant, Grandpa.” Eve held Ethan’s hand. “Didn’t my Grandpa tell you?”

“Of course he did.” Ethan’s grandfather glared at her. “But I don’t believe you, Evelyn. If you were pregnant, Elena would have let me know.”

“What do you mean, Old Man? Are you trying to say my granddaughter was lying?”

“Isn’t it obvious?” Ethan’s grandfather looked at him. “This girl claims she has intended for it to be a surprise, but I don’t believe it. Knowing her personality, she would take out a microphone and announce it to the whole world the moment she found out she was pregnant. My grandson wouldn’t keep it a secret either.”

“You, Evelyn!” Her grandfather pointed at her. “He is saying the truth, right? You are not pregnant!”

Eve winced and shrank into Ethan’s arm, sniffing back her imaginary tears. “G–Grandpa.”

“Silence. You thought you could fool me, you silly girl. Now nothing will stop me from making you two divorce.”

“Ah, Ethan.” Eve stared up at the man.

“Eve and I are not getting a divorce.” Ethan squeezed her hand. “You were supposed to rectify things, Grandpa.”

“There is no rectifying in this matter. This girl lies, and liars shouldn’t be treated with kindness.”

“Evelyn, I can’t wait to punish you.” Her grandfather scolded. “Now your father is spreading the news to everyone in the circle. Do you want us to appear as fools?”

“Grandpa!” Eve whined. “Ethan and I have made up already. Quit speaking about the divorce please.”

“Shut up!” Ethan’s grandfather cut her off. “We get to decide if you two will be with each other. Since we’re the ones that brought you together, we have the power to separate you.”

“We are not getting a divorce,” Ethan said.

“Yes, we’re not.” Eve nodded.

“And if you try to push us, Grandpa, I will abandon the company and move to another country with Eve.”

“You would do that for me?” Eve lifted her head and asked softly.

“I will do anything for you, Eve.” Ethan cupped the sides of her face. “I never go back on my promise.”

“Then don’t let them come between us.”

“I won’t.”

Eve hugged him and buried her face in his chest. “I– I love you, Ethan.”

“Me too.” Ethan patted her back. Eve could swear she heard him chuckle.

Her heart fluttered and her lips spread into a smile. “You’re not just bluffing, right?”

“Eve, I’m serious.”

“What are you two doing!?”

Eve pulled away from Ethan’s embrace. The two old men stared at them in shock.

“You, Evelyn, come here this instant!” Her grandfather commanded.

“Grandson, let go of her right now.” Ethan’s grandfather hit the floor with his cane.

“Let’s get out of here,” Ethan said and Eve smiled and nodded. They left the study room hand in hand, her eyes lingering on his side profile.

“Ethan, I’m serious. You won’t go back on what you said, right?”

“I won’t,” Ethan replied. “Let’s go home, Eve.”

“Sure, let me get my things.” Eve left him walking down the stairs and she entered her room. She picked up the backpack and her phone and handbag, then her parents’ gifts.

On coming out of her room, she bumped into her mother in the hallway. “Mum…” She greeted and was about to walk away, but her mother grabbed her hand.

Eve’s heart stopped beating in that second and she stared back at the woman in shock. “Mum.”

Her mother placed two fingers on the back of her wrist, her eyes flashing with indescribable emotions.

Then she released her hand and walked away, and Eve’s heartbeat came back to life.

‘That was weird.’ Eve surveyed her hand and placed her fingers on that spot. She let out a sigh before retaining her smile and rushing for the stairs.

Ethan was waiting for her in his car, and she jumped inside and shut the door.
