Chapter 82: The Last Thing You Will Do

The days flew by like a gust of wind. One week’s extension turned into another and another and another.

It had been always a month and a half since Ethan traveled. Eve couldn’t have been lonelier if it wasn’t for her work distracting her. Literally, the club had been very active recently.

“Madam, you’re not thinking of going to work today, right?” A maid stood behind Eve as she slowly ate her food in the dining room.

“Camila, stop pestering. I promise I’m fine.” Eve gave the girl a helpless look. She’d taken her medication properly and constantly followed the Doctor’s advice. But out of nowhere, she fainted again last night, making the maids and the Stewardess alert.

“I’m sure there’s not much work to do at the company since the Young Master is not around. Can’t you rest for some days, Madam? You’ve also warned us not to let him know of your fainting spree, but if he finds out we’ll all be in trouble.”

“No one will get into any trouble.” Eve shook her head. “Now, get me some glucose, Camila. Maybe if you haven’t been taking it away from me, I wouldn’t have passed out a lot.”

“Madam, you…” Camila pursed her lips then sighed helplessly. “Please don’t take it too much. You also finished a jar last night. It’s true that it can help replenish your energy, but you must stop doing heavy work to contribute to your wellness.”

“Noted, Camila. Bring me the glucose already.” Eve returned her attention to eating while the maid walked out.

She finished some of the food and drank her pineapple juice then stood up with her bag. Fortunately, her nausea had decreased rapidly. She didn’t vomit as much as before.

Eve rubbed her stomach and brought a makeup palette out of her bag then retouched her makeup. ‘Urgh.’ why was she adding flesh this fast? Would she even be recognizable in a few months?

“Here’s the glucose, Madam.” The maid returned with a jar of glucose.

“Hehe, thank you, Camila.” Eve took the jar and opened it. “Huh? Only half?” She lifted her head and frowned.

“Yes, Madam.” The maid didn’t blink. “I know you’re going to finish it all up, so I reduced it by half. Even so, I’ll advise you again to save some for tomorrow. You mustn’t take it frequently.”

“Urgh, I get it.” Eve rolled her eyes and dropped the glucose jar inside her bag. “You’re even stricter than Elena. It’s just a pint of glucose, why are you being so… so strict?”

“Madam, it’s for your well-being.”

Eve walked out of the house and the driver drove her to the company. She entered the company and headed to the elevator, dodging the receptionists’ area.

The elevator didn’t take her directly up to the president’s area. She made a stop at the Innovation Department and walked ahead to the Manager’s office.

Eve glanced over her shoulder and frowned. What was that gaze on her back? Was someone following her?

She shook her head then looked away. Hopefully, Ethan’s spies didn’t reside in this company. However, there was always this lingering feeling at the back of her mind about someone following her lately.

“Hi, Mira.” Amanda stood up from her desk as Eve stepped into the office. “What a splendid surprise. To what do I owe this visit?”

“Amanda, by now, we’re more than friends, right?” Eve sat across the lady and propped one leg atop the other.

“Of course. You’ve done so many things for the club. Mr. Alan and Mr. Clinton and I are even planning to promote you.”

“Really?” Eve’s eyes lit up.

“Sure, Mira. You’ve earned it. You didn’t only send us photos of you and the president, but also a chat screenshot. The news is going to shake the whole city, this company will be on the media for months.”

“Wow.” Eve opened her mouth and nodded. “When do you plan to spread the scandal anyways?”

“I haven’t decided it with the others yet. We’re still waiting for the right moment,” Amanda replied. “Mira, I know that’s not what brought you here. Is there something you would like me to do for you?”

“I want to know the bigger fish you guys spoke about, Amanda. Since we’re alone now, you can just tell me what it is. I know Mr. Clinton and Mr. Alan don’t want to talk about it.”

Amanda chewed at her bottom lip, staring down at the desk. “Honestly, Mira. I can’t hide the truth from you.” She lifted her head and stared into Eve’s eyes. “Even I, the leader of the club have no idea what it is. Mr. Alan and Mr. Clinton aren’t holding back on you. We are speaking the truth.”

“That is strange.” Eve frowned. “If I’m not mistaken, Amanda. That bigger fish is your mission’s goal. How comes you don’t know what it is.”

“Look, Mira.” Amanda wiped her face. “Part of our mission is to bring this company down. But things are much more complicated than you think. Why don’t you just leave this question alone and let’s focus on the mission?”

“But, Amanda–”

“There are more than fifty members in The Ambitious Employees Club, but none of them have ever questioned what that bigger fish is. Why are you so persistent to know, Mira?”

“Urhm, it’s not like that.” Eve put on a sweet smile. “Come on, Amanda. You know I’m a very curious person and I ask a lot of questions. Also, I was very serious about not being kept in the dark.”

“We are not keeping you in the dark. That is the whole truth, Mira.”

Eve left the Lady’s office and trudged toward the elevator, sighing. Her eyes were fixed on the floor and she hung the bag loosely around her shoulder. Suddenly, someone bumped into her and her bag dropped.

“I’m so sorry.” The person squatted down to help her pack her things which were scattered on the floor.

On hearing that voice, Eve paused then she looked up. “You…”

“If this isn’t our dear Mrs. Anderson.” Jessie put on a triumphant look and abandoned Eve’s things then stood up. “I wonder what you’re doing in this kind of place. Oh, you just came out of the Manager’s office.”

“What is your problem, Jessica?” Eve glared at her.

“My problem is with you snooping around.” Jessie folded her hands and scoffed. “Mrs. Anderson, I’ve been warning you for a long time but you won’t listen. You’re just digging a hole for yourself.”

“You’d better mind your business.” Eve maintained her glare. “The last thing you will think of doing in this company is stepping into my way.”

“And maybe the last thing you will also do, Mrs. Anderson, is acting as if you’re smart when you’re not.” Jessie snickered. She kicked Eve’s makeup palette then sauntered away and entered the elevator.

Eve watched the girl’s back and she took in a deep breath. She reached for her makeup palette and picked it up then gathered other things into her bag before standing up and heading into the elevator.

When she arrived at the president’s area, the employees were not as vibrant as before. In fact, they were whispering among themselves that they didn’t even notice her.

‘What is going on?’ Eve frowned and entered the office. And her heart almost leaped out of her chest at the sight of the figure in the room.

Sitting across his working desk was none other than Ethan.
