Chapter 20 His Legal Wife
Clyde!
Violet froze.
Her fear had come true.
Clyde was here.
No.
She was imagining his voice, right?
Who was she kidding?
Even his footsteps were prominent as he approached from behind.
Violet dreaded to turn around.
She dreaded to come face to face with the man.
“Yay! Daddy's here!”
But Mimi jumped down from her arms, scurrying towards the man and reaching her arms up to him.
Clyde picked her up, staring straight at Violet.
His sharp gaze pierced through her, tensing up her nerves.
The look in his eyes…
Violet didn't like it.
It brought more dread to her heart.
She couldn't imagine what was happening.
She didn't like what was about to happen.
“Clyde Crawford, I didn't know you were still around. Mimi told me everything. So you were busy saving her.” Asher gave him a friendly pat on the shoulder.
He loosened up, his once serious face holding a carefree smile. “Let me thank you again-”
“It's my responsibility,” Clyde replied flatly.
“Daddy's right, Uncle Ash.” Mimi bobbed her head. “He's my superhero. Daddy has to save me whenever I'm in trouble, right, Daddy?”
“Yes.” Clyde nodded.
No!
Violet's heart sank.
It mustn't be that Clyde already knew…
“Mimi’s quite a handful.” Asher laughed, totally oblivious. “I can see she's stolen your heart already.”
Violet took a step backward.
Asher was wrong.
She had a feeling that Clyde wasn't acting along.
He was once pushing Mimi away now he admitted he was her father.
Which meant, Clyde had found out the truth!
“Violet.”
His voice sounding her name sent shivers down her spine.
Fixing her with a stern gaze, he murmured, “We need to talk.”
Violet's heartbeat picked up.
Talk?
About what?
“Right. Now.” Clyde added in a dark tone, enunciating each word.
No way!
Violet didn't move an inch.
Her feet rooted to the spot, the tension slowly crept in.
She didn't want to follow him.
She didn't want to discuss anything.
“Is anything wrong?” Asher's smile faltered.
Snapping out of her reverie, Violet shook her head. “Nothing.”
Then she snatched Mimi from Clyde's arms, taking to her heels and walking as fast as she could.
“Ah! Mummy, I wanna go back to Daddy.”
Violet didn't reply, increasing her pace instead.
She couldn't turn back the hands of time.
She could just ignore.
“Vi, do you know each other?” Asher caught up with her.
Violet replied, “No!”
Her apprehension was increasing, and her nerves were trembling.
No- not Clyde.
If only she'd been faster.
If only Asher had agreed when she first asked to head to the helicopter.
If only she hadn't run from that hospital.
Walking into her baby at the inn should be considered a blessing,
After all, it cooled Violet's heart seeing that her baby was safe.
But now thinking about it,
It was in fact, a curse.
If she'd remained calm as Asher instructed her, Clyde would return Mimi the next morning.
Violet wouldn't have been caught unaware.
She would avoid him.
But now,
Wasn't it too late?
“No, Mummy!” Mimi cried out, struggling to loosen herself. “Take me back to Daddy-”
“Miracle, enough!” Violet snapped.
But she regretted it in the next second when her baby's eyes watered up with tears.
Violet felt like crying too. Stroking her hair, she apologized, “I'm so sorry, Baby.”
She'd never yelled at her daughter before,
But right now, she was confused and scared.
“I just wanna go to Daddy…” Mimi sniffled. “Please don't yell, Mummy.”
Violet didn't mean to yell.
She just…
She couldn't control it.
“What exactly is happening, Violet?” Asher changed his tone, sounding frustrated.
Blocking her path, he repeated, “Do you know him or not?”
The suspicion was back in his eyes.
Asher wouldn't leave her alone until he knew the truth.
It was all written all over his face.
Yet,
Violet's heart was torn.
She couldn't lie to herself.
It was too late.
Whatever she told Asher right now could affect their relationship.
He'd think she never planned to tell him.
He'd think she only opened up because she had to.
He'd think badly of her.
“Violet is my legal wife!” Clyde reached their side. “If that's what you want to know, Asher.”
