Chapter 23 The Evidence
~
His eyes must be deceiving him.
Clyde couldn't believe what he was witnessing.
What the hell was Asher Sydney about to do with his wife?
Seemed like his nightmare was becoming true.
He couldn't catch a wink of sleep and couldn't control himself from coming here… only to see this!?
They'd got to be kidding.
Violet's eyes widened with shock, the same flabbergasted expression whenever she set eyes on him.
And so did Asher who looked like a thief caught red-handed.
“Why don't you continue?” Stopping in front of them, Clyde folded his hands. “Then see if I don't break you to pieces.”
Asher shifted from her and rose to his feet, giving him a helpless look. “Clyde, we're not enemies.
“You forgot the surname,” Clyde grumbled.
After his statement, Asher's face hardened with tension.
It appeared the fool was gonna claim ownership of what didn't belong to him.
“Clyde, listen. Let's not make a big deal out of this. You and Violet are already divorced, so-”
“Who told you I signed the divorce?” Clyde interrupted him, knowing that the more he let him speak, the more his words would irritate him. “Did Violet tell you that?”
Violet gasped.
Then she sprang up.
“Clyde-”
“I forgive you for running off with my child, Violet Harris. Now pack your things, we're leaving in the morning.”
“And you…” He glanced at Asher. “I'll pretend this is an accident. Never should I see you near my wife anymore.”
After his command, Clyde turned around.
He'd better leave this place before he killed someone,
Before he committed a big mistake.
Violet Harris!
That dumb woman wasn't so dumb after all?
How the hell was she able to hide so well?
How dare she hide his daughter?
Well, that aside, Asher seemed to be more stubborn than he remembered.
That guy would do anything to get what he wanted.
Was that affection he saw in his eyes when he was with Violet?
Ridiculous!
If he didn't stop this union, his name wasn't Clyde Crawford.
He had to get his wife back!
When he returned to the inn, Clyde didn't settle on the bed.
He pulled out his computer and began typing away.
Even a single clue would do to overthrow his enemy.
Nobody should stand in his way.
“Clyde…”
Hours later, the soft silky voice floated in the room.
Clyde looked up from the computer's screen to find the sky bright and light streaming in through the window.
Behold, Violet stood by the door with a shawl wrapped around her shoulders.
Clyde squinted his eyes.
What was she doing here?
Had she come back to her senses?
Had she come to go home with him?
If yes, then he didn't need to go all dirty, because he had found the only clue he'd been looking for all night.
He closed the computer and set it aside, his gaze fixated on her cautiously.
“May I come in?” She hesitated.
Why was she acting like a chicken?
Hadn't she become a little tigress last night, pretending they didn't even know each other?
“Come in.” Clyde shrugged. “I hope you came with your luggage.”
But the look on her face spelled otherwise.
She must be here to speak with him.
Hopefully, it was about something beneficial to both of them.
She came in and sat on the couch, a few feet away from where he stood.
Now she was being conservative.
How funny.
“Clyde, let's discuss like adults.” She must have cried a lot last night. Her voice was hoarse.
“I've thought about it…” She went on. “You have the right to be mad. So did I.”
Right!
She caught him with Cora.
And that was what prompted her to run away.
Well, should he tell her it was all a misunderstanding?
Did it even make sense?
“So let's leave the past in the past.” She added. “I don't want any problems. Asher and I are getting married-”
Clyde raised his hand, halting her.
‘Getting married’
Oh, he detested hearing that phrase.
“You're not here to beg me, are you?” He raised a brow, searching through her soulless eyes.
All her emotions swam in them.
Anxiety, fear, and devastation,
All of them caused by his appearance.
“I am not here to beg you…” She enunciated then softened her voice. “But I hope we don't turn this into a war.”
Then she stood up, her footsteps desperate as she strode up to him. “I won't deny you the custody of your child, Clyde. Just don't come between Asher and me.”
How interesting.
“You're abandoning your child for another man-”
“No!”
“Violet Harris.” Clyde rose to his feet. Staring down, he lifted her chin so she could stare into his eyes. “You know me. You know what I'm capable of. For the last time, follow me home.”
“No!” She swatted his hand away, raising her voice. “I'll never live with someone like you.”
“Really?”
Wasn't she lying to herself?
She fell for him at first sight.
He knew the sparkle in her eyes when they first met.
He was used to that kind of look from all women.
When his grandfather insisted he married her, it had been easier than buying a house to convince her.
He was the man every woman wanted to be with.
Who was she kidding?
“You can have your daughter, but not me!” She spat out. “When you cheated, I lost all affection for you!”
“You said the past is in the past-”
“Doesn't mean we'll ever be a couple again.” She fired back. “So, Mr. Crawford, please go and sign that divorce papers. You can acknowledge your daughter if you want to- but I warn you, don't come for me and Asher, because I have evidence of you cheating with Cora. Let's see how the media will react if the whole world knows about it!”
Her words shook him.
Violet wasn't here to talk.
She was here to negotiate, or more accurately,
She was here to threaten him.
Did she have the evidence?
“One more thing,” she added, lowering her voice. “My family doesn't know about you. I hope it remains that way!”
Then she turned and left, leaving him bewildered,
Leaving him amused.
Clyde stood in the same spot for a while, watching her figure fade into the distance.
His lips twitched and he let out a deep chuckle.
Fine.
“Seems like you want it the hard way, Violet Harris.”
