Too Late, Ex-husband

Chapter 30 Promised Him
…
At Continental Villa Estates.
Violet sat in the chair by the window, letting the cool morning wind breeze past her into the room.
On peaceful mornings like this one, she was able to organize her thoughts.
And recently, her thoughts had been in nothing but jeopardy.
First was the appearance of her ex-husband.
And then meeting Cora again, before her baby got lost and came down with that condition.
Now Clyde was after her like a ghost.
Hopefully, the nightmare she had wouldn't come true.
It was a horrible experience she wouldn't wish upon her mortal enemy.
If that nightmare came true…
Violet shuddered, shaking her head to dispel those thoughts.
If only it was easy to forget things.
Then she'd give anything to forget this nightmare.
A gentle knock came from the door, putting a halt to her thoughts and saving her from thinking further about the nightmare.
Asher stepped inside, his eyes roaming across the room before they fell on her. “You're up already.”
“Good morning.” Violet stood up and walked over to him.
He was dressed in a grey business suit, obviously set for work.
Wasn't it too early?
Asher sat on the edge of the bed, offering her a small smile in reply to her pleasantry.
Was that a black circle underneath his eyes?
His eyes also appeared wary and tired.
Didn't he sleep last night?
“Violet, if you were to choose between me and Mimi's father. Who would you go for?”
Violet was about to voice out the question in her mind when Asher asked that strange question.
Where was that coming from?
Wasn't his question funny?
“I want you to answer me truthfully.” However, Asher didn't seem to be joking, giving her a serious look. “Will you choose Clyde Crawford or me?”
Was that even a question?
Did Asher think that she wasn't over that heartless man yet?
Clyde almost destroyed her womb for goodness sake.
Why would she go for that kind of man?
“Vi-”
“I heard your question…” Violet murmured.
She was just too surprised that she couldn't form a reply yet.
Looking up, her lips pulled into a smile and she squeezed his hands gently. “Of course, I'll choose you, Ash. You've been so good to me, and-”
He placed a finger on her lips, shushing the rest of her words.
The seriousness in his eyes hadn't faded, the look in them turning into something else.
“Can you prove it?”
When he whispered that, Violet blinked, not quite understanding his request.
“You said you'd choose me.” Asher went on, his gaze falling on her lips. “Can you prove it, Violet?”
She gulped.
Violet didn't need to be told what he wanted her to do.
She didn't understand why she wasn't comfortable with it.
Instead of shifting close, Violet found herself shifting away.
But Asher wasn't giving up.
Their hands still intertwined, he stroked the ring on her finger. “Are you disgusted with me?”
He sounded hurt and confused.
Violet couldn't even bring herself to look into his eyes.
Right. Was she disgusted with him?
Asher was now her fiancé for goodness sake.
They'd been together for quite a long time now.
Yet, they'd never gone past touching hands and hugging.
Was she being too conservative?
Instead of waiting for her to make a move, Asher shifted close.
He lifted her chin, tilting up her face.
Violet's heart was racing again. Her breathing hitched and she struggled to breathe normally.
What was happening?
She wasn't about to have a panic attack, was she?
She closed her eyes, hoping it would chase away her anxiety.
It didn't work.
Her heartbeat only got louder.
Gradually, she felt his palms on her shoulders, caressing them gently.
Violet dared not open her eyes or she might do something as stupid as push him away.
She couldn't tell why,
But she wasn't ready for intimacy with him yet.
“Uncle Ash, what are you doing to my Mummy!?” A tiny yell jolted them apart.
Mimi stomped out of the bathroom, wearing a tiny bathrobe, her messy hair dripping wet.
Clearing his throat, Asher faced the other direction, and Violet couldn't conceal her embarrassment either.
“Uhm, Mimi, you're done bathing?” She stood up and grabbed a towel, wrapping it around her wet hair. “Now let's get you all dried up.”
“No need, Mummy.” Mimi grabbed the towel, frowning in Asher's direction. “Remember I'm now a young lady. I'll do everything by myself.”
Then she stomped away and climbed onto the chair in front of the mirror.
Violet watched silently as the girl tried to dry up her hair, her aggressive movements surprising her.
Mimi wasn't mad, was she?
She wasn't even as cheerful towards Asher as before.
Shaking her head helplessly, her eyes strayed to Asher's direction who had already stood up. “Well, I'll be going. Take care, you two.”
“You too, Ash.” Violet walked him to the door and bid him goodbye.
As Asher left for the stairs, she facepalmed herself in embarrassment before returning to the bathroom.
“You're being mean to Uncle Ash again, Mimi. Why did you give him the cold shoulder?”
Violet couldn't help but scold the girl.
If Mimi went on like this, wouldn't it make things awkward all the time?
Her daughter didn't seem affected though. She even smiled as she shrugged. “Mummy, I couldn't let Uncle Ash take advantage of you. You only belong to my Daddy.”
Those words coming from her daughter's mouth sent cold shivers down Violet's spine.
She couldn't help but blink at the girl.
She scratched her ear to make sure she didn't hear her wrong.
“Weren't you comfortable with me being with Uncle Ash? You promised to be nice to him?”
Mimi dropped her tiny hairbrush and sighed.
Although she didn't look guilty at all, her words sounded apologetic. “I shouldn't have decided too early. Mummy, why can't we all be with my Daddy instead? I had a dream that Daddy misses us.”
Urgh!
Clyde again.
If only the little girl knew her father's true color.
Then even she wouldn't want to be near him.
“For my sake, Mummy, I want you to be with my Daddy again.” She jutted out her lower lip, batting her long lashes. “Please, Mummy. I know Daddy needs us.”
Violet slapped her forehead.
Seriously, she was having a headache.
But she couldn't go on scolding her daughter.
Not when Mimi was putting up this cute and innocent front when she was being mischievous.
Where did she even learn this from?
“Listen here, Dear.” Violet took the brush, running it through the girl's hair carefully. “It’s not a good thing to make a promise and back out of it. Do you want your Mummy to come off as unreliable?”
Mimi shook her head, her gloom becoming more evident. “You didn't promise Uncle Ash that you'd marry him, did you?”
“I did, Dear.” Violet showed her the ring on her finger. “This ring is proof.”
