Chapter 85 Her Husband
…
At Metro City.
‘She’s awake!’
As the heartbeat monitor changed rhythm, his own heartbeat became irregular.
Sitting in the chair beside the bed, Asher tapped his feet anxiously.
He waited for her to open her eyes.
He waited to confirm his suspicion.
Despite the bandage on her forehead, concealing half of her face, the resemblance was undeniable.
It was so striking that he believed she was…
“Violet.”
Asher called out the moment she opened her eyes.
Fluttering her eyelids, she squinted to adjust her eyes to the light.
“Oh… where am I?” She let out a pained murmur, reaching up to touch her head,
But then she winced.
Her arm was broken.
It was going to take at least two weeks before the fracture healed.
“Violet…” Asher called out again.
Those eyes.
He could never mistake them.
Those were his Violet's eyes.
She stared at him, blinking, her eyes narrowing a bit.
For a second, she didn't speak as if thrown into shock.
Her expression was pale and she winced once more. “W- Who are you?”
“Don't you recall?” Asher reached out and stroked her hair.
How he wished this was real.
Violet was back!
She shook her head, staring at him innocently. “I- I don't recall… Where am I?”
How could she be so perfect?
Whenever she spoke, her voice always did strange things to him.
Definitely, nobody else had such a sweet voice with a calming effect except her.
“You're in a hospital…” He replied. “You got into an accident.”
“Oh?” She kept on blinking.
Then her lips parted in shock. Her expression turned sullen, and she sighed. “Is my name Violet?”
Asher paused.
But then he also sighed and nodded. “Do you like it?”
“Yeah.” She tried to give him a smile, but it didn't reach her eyes.
She must be so confused right now.
“I'll get the Doctor…” Asher stood up, his mind somehow relieved, his heart somehow troubled.
He left the ward and met his assistant sitting on the waiting chair outside.
Asher sat beside him, holding his forehead. “How could destiny be so confusing?”
“You really don't believe she's Ms. Hayes, do you?” James chuckled.
Of course, that lady wasn't Violet.
Violet was in IvoryHills. No way she would end up back here so soon.
“But who is she?” Asher murmured. This was so confusing.
How could there be another Violet?
How could she have a doppelganger?
Was this lady her lost twin?
Well, they grew up together. Their families were very close.
If Violet had a lost twin, Asher would be the first to know.
“We can find out who she is when she wakes up,” His assistant suggested. “I believe she has a connection with Ms. Hayes.”
Asher shook his head.
If only that was possible.
“She's already awake.” He sighed heavily. “She doesn't remember anything.”
“Huh? She lost her memories?” The assistant looked flabbergasted. “That's bizarre. Maybe she's only confused.”
Whether she was confused or not, Asher would soon find out.
He summoned the doctor who did a brain scan on her.
A while later, he sat inside the doctor's office with James.
“It is true that the young lady has lost her memories,” The Doctor explained. “The accident caused a shock in her brain, making her forget the moment and all the events before that.”
“But I assure you she'll recover.” The Doctor smiled. “We've had patients like this. They sometimes lose their memories after a traumatic event. It's the brain’s way of protecting the victim from recalling the mental pain. In a few days, she'll be back to her old self.”
Asher sighed in relief.
A few days wasn't that long.
He could wait and solve this puzzle.
He left the Doctor's office and returned to the ward.
She sat on the couch, eating, while a nurse kept her company.
“Mr. Sydney, you have returned.” The Nurse stood up. “I'll leave you two then.”
Even after the nurse left, Asher spent some minutes standing by the door, watching her.
He couldn't help but imagine Violet sitting there.
They looked the same.
But… They didn't feel the same.
Should he call Violet and tell her about this?
This was an emergency after all, and Violet wouldn't mind.
On second thought, however, Asher let go of that idea.
He'd rather handle this alone. Violet was already dealing with enough problems.
Stepping forward, he sat beside her on the couch.
Her fingers trembled as she tried to grab the spoon.
The nurse had been feeding her before he came in, and now she was trying to feed by herself.
What a pitiful sight.
“Here, I'll do it.” Asher picked up the spoon.
As he fed her the food, he couldn't look away from her face. He only had to convince himself again and again that she wasn't Violet.
When she was done eating, he made her drink water.
“Still hungry?”
She shook her head to his question. “I wanna go home.”
Asher laughed softly, at her gloomy tone. “You can't leave the hospital yet. Your wounds have to heal first.”
“Oh…” She sighed in disappointment.
Staring at the floor, she blinked rapidly to hold back her tears. “I hate that I can't remember anything.”
“You'll do in a few days…” He assured. “The Doctor said that your condition is common.”
“Oh…” She nodded. “Can you help me lie on the bed?”
Glancing from her to the bed, Asher found it awkward at first.
What was he thinking?
She was just a helpless girl in need of help.
He put the plates away and picked her up.
She was as light as a feather. He was almost afraid that he'd break her bones.
Carefully, he lay her on the bed.
James came inside with two bags containing fruits. “I have bought this for you, Miss. I hope you enjoy it.”
She smiled at the sight of the fruit. “You're so kind. Are you one of the nurses?”
James glanced at his outfit.
He didn't look like one. “Of course not-” He laughed, about to introduce himself.
But her words stopped him. “Then you must be friends with my husband.”
