Chapter 9 Suspicious
So soon.
Clyde showed his true nature to Mimi.
The heartless man wouldn't spare even a little girl.
Violet left the bedroom, coming outside to see her daughter's eyes puffy with tears.
Her dress was dusty.
She must have come in contact with sand.
Anger mixed with pain clutched her heart. Squatting down, Violet drew Mimi into her embrace. “It's okay. Mummy's here.”
But Freya found the situation funny.
Standing up, she laughed. “Is it the Daddy you wouldn't shut up about since yesterday?”
Mimi sniffled. “He's a meanie.”
She wrapped her chubby arms around Violet, burying her head in her neck.
Her tiny voice, mixed with sobs and sadness echoed in the hallway. “Mummy, why did Daddy push me away? I put on my best dress… I look prettier today, don't I, Mummy?”
“Of course, Baby.” Violet sighed inside.
Clyde didn't know…
Still, how could he be so heartless to his own daughter?
He could at least pretend to be nice by not pushing the little girl away.
Where were his manners?
How sad that nothing could change destiny.
Whether Violet liked it or not, such a heartless man was Mimi's biological father.
He might not know Mimi was his daughter yet, but bullying a little girl was an offensive act.
Hopefully,
Mimi would stay away from him.
After this, she'd never ask for her Daddy again.
“Vi…” Freya dragged her attention.
Violet lifted her head to find her best friend giving her a strange look.
“You aren't only crying because Mimi's crying, right?”
She was crying?
Violet gasped and quickly wiped the tears that dropped from her eyes.
She shook her head rapidly. “No- No, of course, not. Something got into my eyes.”
“Not buying it.” Freya gave her a pointed look, planting both hands on her waist. “Lemme guess. It's related to the reason why you locked up yourself.”
Violet stood up.
Harder to escape her baby's pestering was evading Freya's question.
She'd already made up her mind anyway.
She couldn't hide this matter from Freya.
Violet wiped Mimi's tears. “Forget about him. Grandma's looking for you.”
“Where's Grandma?” Mimi pursed her lips.
It must be hard for the little girl, coping with the sudden rejection.
After all, Clyde was the first ever man she'd been eager about.
“Grandma’s downstairs.” Violet urged her on.
After Mimi left,
Freya snapped her fingers. “Can we talk about it now?”
“Let's go inside.” Violet glanced around the empty hallway.
She held Freya's hand, about to enter the bedroom,
But-
“I found Grandma, Mummy!” Mimi returned with Violet's mother.
The middle-aged woman was holding her in her arms, her brows furrowed as she gave Violet an incredulous look.
In her mother's eyes were many questions.
But the woman didn't ask anything.
She only said, “You’re keeping the guests waiting. Asher's parents are here.”
She grabbed Violet's hand, leading her downstairs. “Don’t tell me you're getting the jitters again. This time, your engagement must happen.”
Her mother was obviously mad.
Even Mimi could sense it and she remained silent.
Once Violet's mother took her downstairs, she grumbled something and walked away with Mimi.
Her family were no longer present.
They must be outside.
The only people standing in the living room were Asher and his parents.
Violet's heart almost skipped a beat, dreading she'd see a particular someone…
Until her fear was replaced with a deep relief.
“Oh my, you're so pretty!” Asher's mother gave her a tight hug.
The woman kissed her cheeks and stroked her hair, staring at her with admiration. “Asher has great eyes for good things.”
“That's because he takes after his father.” Asher's Dad chimed in.
The middle-aged man hugged Violet as well, patting her back gently. “I can't wait to welcome you into my family.”
Their kindness rendered her speechless.
For several months, Violet had avoided meeting his parents.
She'd had a traumatic experience with in-laws before and feared his parents might turn out the same.
But this couple showed her nothing but genuine kindness.
Violet's tears threatened to fall.
If she had in-laws as kind as this, what else could she ask for?
Violet's gaze strayed to Asher.
Unlike a few moments ago, he wasn't all smiles.
As he accessed her with a serious look, she didn't need to be told what was in his mind.
In his eyes was a look of suspicion.
Feeling uncomfortable, Violet avoided his gaze.
But her eyes fell on a lady who just entered.
Cora.
