Chapter 10 Haunting Memories
Instinctively, Violet pulled out of the middle-aged man's embrace.
Her heart suddenly racing, she blinked her eyes.
Cora.
Cora was also here?
Violet must be seeing wrong.
But she wasn't.
As Clyde's secretary sauntered into the living room, her high heels clicking on the floor, she had on her signature sweet smile.
A smile she'd always used to deceive everyone.
Cora's presence meant one thing.
It's a confirmation that Clyde was on this Island.
As their gazes met, however, Cora's eyes widened a bit.
Then they turned into slits as she plastered on an even sweeter smile.
It was only a fleeting glance.
Did Cora not recognize her?
“Hello, Asher… where's the special lady?”
“Right beside you.” Asher nodded towards Violet.
Cora spun around, putting on a shocked look. “I must say… she's pretty!”
She giggled, reaching out for a handshake. “Hello, Sweetie… I'm Cora Reid, Asher's classmate at high school. Nice to meet you.”
Violet stood, stunned.
A classmate from high school?
Lost at what to say or how to react, she didn't return the handshake.
Cora's hand hung mid-air for some seconds.
Then she chuckled and dropped her hands.
Looking uncomfortable, Asher cleared his throat as if to douse the tension. “I thought Clyde was coming.”
“You know how he is.” Cora shrugged.
“Dressing up, I guess!” Asher shook his head, chuckling.
Cora laughed along.
Then she eyed Violet. “Actually, no… He's in bed, tired.”
She gave him a playful wink.
Asher's eyes lit up with realization then his face flushed with embarrassment.
He changed the topic. “You guys have been inseparable since high school. Married yet? Engaged?”
Cora replied, “Enjoying life together.”
Enjoying life.
Meaning Cora was still his mistress.
Cora pretending not to recognize Violet must be an act.
How could she not recognize her when Violet hadn't changed a bit?
“Well, let me introduce you properly.” Asher turned to her.
“Violet, meet Cora… Here's my future bride, Cora.”
Asher taking it upon himself to introduce them again meant her earlier action didn't settle well with him.
Violet had to force herself to exchange handshakes with Cora.
She couldn't even force a smile, while Cora fixed her with a confident gaze, giving her the sweetest smile.
Then suddenly,
Cora pulled her forward and hugged her.
“Why did you appear again, bitch!?” She whispered beside her ear.
Violet paused.
She'd been right!
The two-faced girl couldn't wait to show her true color.
A bitch!?
Between them, the real bitch was obvious!
Violet didn't think twice before pushing out of the hug, Cora's insult resounding in her ears.
“Ouch!” Cora staggered and fell on the floor, letting out a dramatic yelp.
Everyone gasped, and Asher frowned.
“Violet, what's the matter?”
“No- no, it's not her fault.” Cora stood up, wincing as she held her waist. “My heels are slippery.”
Violet felt like laughing.
No, she was mad.
Even after five years, Cora never changed a bit.
Cora would openly hint at her jealousy towards Violet.
Violet never minded, having the full assurance that Clyde loved her and would never look at another woman.
It turned out the two had been cheating already behind her back.
Violet couldn't remain standing here.
As those haunting memories returned with a wave of anger, she released her clenched fists and turned around.
“Excuse me, please,” she murmured and walked away, hurrying to the nearest washroom.
Violet stood in front of the mirror.
She took in deep breaths to calm herself.
Never did she expect Clyde and Cora's betrayal to still cut deep.
She never knew that the scar hadn't healed yet.
Asher.
He was very close with Clyde and Cora.
They appeared to be good friends.
Would marrying him benefit Violet?
Would it not cause a problem for her?
But Asher was innocent.
How could she reject him because of those evil people?
The washroom door moved with a cringing sound.
Hearing the approaching steps, Violet quickly composed herself.
She stared at the mirror for the second time.
Behold,
Cora's reflection.
Leaning by the doorframe, Cora folded her hands. “So this is where you're hiding, Bitch!”
