Chapter 96 Getting Out of Hands
Hoping that his eyes weren't deceiving him, Clyde rose to his feet, his heart beating with anticipation.
Never had he expected her to ever visit him in his office.
Hadn't she been mad at him since these past few days?
“Ah-Ah.” Harry coughed rapidly as if he'd just caught a cold.
He sprang up from the chair, looking flabbergasted. “And so, Mr. Crawford… Which car do you think is more suitable? I understand that you need more drivers for the job, unfortunately, I'm just a rookie. I hope you can give me more time to master driving.”
As Harry blabbered on, Clyde didn't pay him attention.
Violet didn't either.
She stepped forward, her gaze fixed on his, her expression devoid of warmth.
Was she here to visit or fight him?
The cold look on her face made him uncomfortable.
Clyde cleared his throat. “Why're you here?”
“The school hours are almost over.” She folded her hands. “Have you forgotten our promise to Mimi?”
Right!
How could he forget?
To honor her first day of school, Mimi wanted them both to pick her up after the school hours were over.
“I'm ready… let's go.” He grabbed his phone from the desk.
She said nothing else, and an awkwardness hung in the air.
Violet turned to leave and almost crashed into Cora who just barged in.
She bumped shoulders with her, yet, she didn't pause to apologize.
Violet gave her an irritated look, while Cora rolled her eyes in return. Then she stepped forward and brought out an invitation card.
“I forgot to give this to you, Honey. The business gala is on the weekend. As always, I'll be your plus one-”
“Violet will be my plus one.” Clyde cut her off, snatching the invitation. “She's my wife and that's more appropriate.”
Cora's expression fell.
She stared at him in disbelief, her eyes reddening. “But we've always gone together. W- Why?”
“You know why.” Clyde slipped on his suit jacket and walked past her.
He took Violet’s hand in his. “Shall we?”
The girl, who looked a bit speechless, nodded absentmindedly.
As they left the office together, Harry hurried ahead. “As Mr. Crawford's new driver, it's my duty to take you there.”
Harry's acting was over the top.
Thank goodness Violet did not pay him attention.
They walked out of the company hand in hand.
Clyde could take the private elevator that led straight to the parking lot, however, he changed his mind.
And just as expected, when they passed through the employees’ area, whispers and murmurs broke out.
“I haven't seen it wrong. That's Mrs. Crawford.”
“It has been years since she last stepped foot here.”
“Yeah. I almost thought her marriage ended with Mr. Crawford.”
“Haven't you heard? Rumor has it that she traveled abroad and also gave birth to a child. It hasn't been long since she returned.”
“Ah, now it all makes sense. Have you heard that Ms. Reid has been fired from her job as the President's secretary?”
“I heard she got promoted to a COO position.”
“Nobody will buy that. Everyone knows how obsessed with the President she is. Maybe the return of his wife has put her in her rightful place-”
“Hey, shush! You don't want her to hear us, do you?”
“Remember five years ago, Mrs. Crawford ran out of this company in tears. Everyone guessed that it's because of Ms. Reid’s relationship with Mr. Crawford. Now that she has returned, the mistress will learn her lesson-”
“Damnit! Do you wanna be fired?”
Ignoring the employees’ gossip and pretending he didn't hear a single word, Clyde left the company with Violet.
If he had been walking alone, those blabbermouths would definitely get fired.
They knew too much.
How in the world did they get that information?
At the parking lot, Harry jumped into the driver's seat after chasing the real driver away. “Mr. Crawford, Mrs. Crawford, should we head to the Little Young Miss’s school directly?”
“Mm.” Clyde nodded.
Sitting in the backseat, he glanced sideways at her.
Violet was engrossed in operating her phone and he could only see her side profile.
Clyde just hoped that she didn't hear the employees’ gossip.
He'd hung out so much with Cora in the past that a lot of people doubted their relationship.
“Violet…” He placed a palm on her lap. She shook it off.
Clyde sighed and retracted his hand.
The car ride was too boring and silent. He was about to strike up a conversation with her when the speakers blared with loud music.
Harry was already singing along before he realized where he was.
Quickly, he turned the music off. “I'm so sorry, Mr. Crawford, Mrs. Crawford… The speakers malfunctioned.”
As if she wasn't there, Violet didn't look up from her phone for a second.
Clyde threw the guy a warning glare through the rearview mirror.
Harry only winked in return.
He tried to strike up a conversation with her once more, but she suddenly brought out an earphone and used it to block her ears.
Her actions were getting out of hand.
Seriously, how would they reconcile if she kept on giving him the cold shoulder?
Harry was watching like an eagle. He would definitely detect something was wrong.
“Hey!” Violet gasped as he pulled her close to him by the waist.
She stared at him wide-eyed, looking flabbergasted.
Clyde went ahead to remove the headphones from her ears.
Then he kept it aside and continued holding her like that.
Violet struggled but he didn't let her go. In the end, she threw him a scorching glare before reclining against him.
The car finally arrived in front of Mimi's school, just in time for the school's bells to ring.
Kids flooded out of the school in the company of their guardians.
Clyde left the car with Violet.
They waited for Mimi to come out, yet, she hadn't.
When all the kids had left, the worry inside his heart reflected in Violet's eyes as they both went to her classroom.
There, they met Mimi and one other kid looking sad as the classroom teacher stood in front of them.
