Chapter 98 Finish What She Started
If it had been before, Violet would have been ecstatic.
In the past, she'd always wanted to go out with him, to be recognized by the world as his wife.
She didn't care if her parents would find her or find out.
All she wanted was his complete love.
Indeed, she'd always been sad whenever he attended those kinds of events without her. But his reason at that time was to protect her from his enemies.
Whenever he was shown on the news with Cora by his side, she'd always have to suppress her gloom and show that she didn't care.
Well, now, Clyde was serious about taking her out. She'd almost thought that he said that in his office only to spite Cora.
But he appeared to mean what he said. Did that amount to anything, however?
Was it gonna change her stance?
“Don't you think it's unfair?” His sullen voice halted her.
Violet paused just as she was about to step out of the study room, contemplating his statement.
What made it unfair?
Was she supposed to agree just because he asked her out?
“You gave me the opportunity to win you back and prove my loyalty…” His footsteps slowly approached. “Yet, you're denying me the right to prove it.”
He hugged her from behind and rested his chin on her shoulder. “You said it yourself… the past is in the past. Why do you keep pushing me away?”
Violet held her breath, their proximity sending her heart racing.
Was she pushing him too far?
Was she being overly cautious?
Indeed, she gave him a chance. But it was only to get him off her back.
She never knew that in these few days, she'd constantly long for the man she'd promised never to let back into her life.
It only took a single touch from him to ignite that passion in her heart. She'd been avoiding him not because she hated him, but because she hated what she was becoming.
She couldn't back out of her promise to Asher.
She couldn't let Clyde gain the same control over her.
Yet, even now as he held her gently, his scent surrounding her, Violet was losing her mind.
The self-control she'd been trying hard to exercise these past few days was gradually slipping from her hands.
“Clyde…”
“If you don't attend the gala with me, how's everyone gonna know that I value you as my wife?” As he spoke, he trailed gentle kisses down the sides of her neck. “How're they gonna know that I'm a responsible husband?”
Was he ever responsible?
Why was she finding it so hard to forgive him?
“Violet…”
She sucked in a deep breath as he went on whispering. “Cora is nothing compared to your presence in my heart. I only tolerate her because of an old promise I've made to her brother. It's true that Cora covets your position, but I only want to be with you.”
What would it feel like to be loved by someone you loved?
How would it feel to hear those reassuring words from him?
To hear that you're gonna be the only woman in his heart, and that he'd never look at other women.
His words not only entered her ears… they went straight to her heart. Her stance wavered and she turned around-
Oh, she shouldn't have.
His eyes were raw with emotions, the genuineness of his words reflecting inside them.
He meant the words he said.
Unable to bear the overwhelming emotions taking over her heart, she threw her arms over his shoulder, stood on her toes, and locked her lips with his.
No, she shouldn't have.
Clyde picked her up and lowered her onto the couch nearby. He took the lead and kissed her deeply, his satisfied groans echoing in the room.
Lost in the ecstasy, she wrapped both arms around his neck to deepen the kiss…
But then, as if awoken by the sound of a glass shattering, she snapped her eyes open.
Damnit!
Sinking in embarrassment, Violet pushed him off her and darted out of the study room.
“Hey, Vi. You look so out of it. What's up?” Violet almost screamed as she bumped into Freya on her way downstairs.
“By the way, have you seen Harry?” Freya added, looking around in confusion. “The Dude promised to take me out.”
Violet quickly composed herself, praying her best friend would not detect anything odd.
Ever since they returned from Mimi's school, she had not seen the supposed driver.
If she wasn't mistaken, the guy had been casually chatting with Clyde before she walked in on them in his office.
Disregarding Freya's other question, Violet pulled her to a corner.
“Are you sure Harry’s what he said he is?” Because Violet had a strong intuition that he wasn't someone simple.
She could ask Clyde directly, if only she wasn't avoiding the man.
Harry had something about him that screamed of wealth.
She was from the socialites’ circle and could recognize a rich guy at a glance.
“What are you saying?” Freya frowned, whispering in return.
Violet rubbed her forehead, sighing frustratedly.
What if it turned out that Harry was who she thought he was?
What was his intention in lying to her friend?
“Actually, it's about-”
“There you are, Freya!” His voice interrupted her.
Speak about the devil.
Harry appeared out of nowhere, jolting them both.
Only God knew how he found them in this corner.
“I've been searching for you all day!” Groaning, Freya let go of Violet and hurried to the guy. “Where have you been?”
“I had some business with Mr. Crawford at the company.” Smiling, the guy hooked his arm around her waist. “Missed me?”
“Yeah.” Freya kissed him on the cheek and they walked away.
Watching their backs, Violet sighed.
Was she being paranoid?
Besides, Freya's infatuation with the guy would soon end.
She should probably stop thinking much about it.
Violet was only worried about Freya's safety, but maybe that was unnecessary.
Recalling that she'd left Mimi taking a bath, Violet turned back for the stairs. However, she hadn't gone far when someone grabbed her and pulled her inside the bedroom.
“You haven't finished what you started, Mrs. Crawford.” Clyde pinned her against the wall. “Isn't that unfair?”
