Chapter 39: Unexpected Turn of Events

Aria’s POV

A middle-aged man scurried out from the crowd in a state of panic. He looked so scared, so dishevelled, and his big round eyes were fixed on Lana.

“I must inform you about what Miss Lana is…”

It was so quick that no one noticed it. The man tumbled down the stage screaming, and fell face flat on the ground.

Screams filled the air, everyone started running helter skelter.

“He is dead!”

Another person screamed, followed by a loud gunshot outside the conference hall.

Rafe shielded me, bodyguards surrounded the place, and when the gunshot stopped, Lana was nowhere to be found.

“Search everywhere for her!”

Kael ordered, cracking his fingers.

ONE MONTH LATER

A month passed without a trace of Lana or any information about her whereabouts. Secret spies were sent to the moonclaw pack to search for her, but reports reached me that there wasn’t a trace of her there.

Panic set in in the pack, everyone became so scared that Lana had run away and would one day attack us unexpectedly.

Even Damien had secretly used his magic to find her, but he couldn’t locate her anywhere. I began to wonder if Lana was still alive. What if she had taken her own life to save herself from the public shame?

But that was impossible. Lana would never take her own life. She was a selfish person who would do anything to stay alive.

“Alpha Aria?”

Alissa interrupted my thoughts.

“She is here again.”

She sighed, placing a file on the desk.

“Should I inform them to send her away today too?”

“Let her in.”

Alissa nodded her head, left, and in just a few minutes, Nina walked in, eyes swollen.

For a month, she had been continuously seeking my audience in the mansion, as well as in the company, but every time she came, I ordered the bodyguards to send her away without seeing her. She had even called and texted, but got ghosted.

“Alpha Aria?”

She burst into tears and dropped to her knees.

“I am so sorry for what I said and did to you that day regarding Lana, i didn’t know she was our pack’s enemy. I thought all she…”

“What brought you here?”

I cut her off, getting up from the seat. There was no way I was going to waste another time with her talking about Lana when I had important things to handle.

“For you to forgive me and…”

“You can leave.”

I pressed a red button under the desk, summoning Alissa to the office.

“If you give me a second chance, I won’t defy your words and…”

“I no longer give second chances, Nina. Once I am being looked down on, disrespected, and betrayed, I shut that person out of my life. All I had ever wanted was a friend—a real best friend who would always see the truth. But what did you do? You supported Lana whom you already knew had bad intentions. And worse, you rolled your eyes at me and smiled at Lana.”

“I was being childish and stupid.”

Glad she knew, but I was done with her. Who knew what other things she was hiding from me? Maybe she was one of Lana’s minions, and I made the mistake of befriending her. Keeping Nina by my side might be a mistake, perhaps she even knew where Lana was and would help her kill me.

“I no longer need a friend.”

“Please do not say that, Aria…”

“It is Alpha Aria to you, i am your leader. From now on, show respect to me as your Alpha leader, and do not come to me unless it is something related to the pack’s affairs.”

Alissa came in.

“You are joking, right?”

She sniffled, standing straight.

“Do I look like I am joking?”

I shifted my gaze to Alissa who looked so confused.

“From now on, Nina isn’t my friend; I have no friend. If she comes to this company to find me, do not let her in unless you figure out she came to report something about the pack.”

Alissa nodded her head, turned to Nina, and showed her the way.

“Are you perhaps sending me away because Alissa told you something about me?”

“What are you insinuating, Nina? You know what? Just leave. The Alpha doesn’t need your presence anymore.”

She pushed Nina out of the office and shut the door on her face.

“I don’t trust her.”

Alissa mumbled, returning.

Not because she said it, but I started suspecting Nina since the day I caught her talking to Lana in the mansion. I had wondered what connection they had that they were talking to each other and what they were talking about.

Maybe she was Lana’s informant and was feeding her all the information she got from me. Maybe she was the one who informed Lana about me registering the organization. Unfriending her from me was the best thing to do. As the Alpha leader, keeping everyone far away from me was the best thing to do.

I didn’t know where I got the idea of befriending Nina, maybe because I never had any friends and wanted to feel how those with friends feel.

“I will have people keep a close watch on her,”

She added, but I said nothing. She could do whatever she felt like doing, it wasn’t like I fully trusted her, either. Noticing that I was ignoring her, Alissa quietly diverted the topic.

“We are still investigating who that man was,”

Yes, the man that was shot dead on the day of the conference. His thought had been on my mind since that day, making me think why he was killed that day, and what he was going to say about Lana.

He looked so scared as if he knew what Lana was up to and wanted to burst the bubble. If only I knew that something like that would happen, I would have planted so many bodyguards outside the hall.

“What is the investigating team saying about it?”

“They said he was the butler in one of Miss Lana’s apartments.”
