Chapter 57: What Rejection Feels Like

Aria’s POV

Shock was visible on his face after hearing my last sentence, but I didn’t care; I meant what I said from the bottom of my heart.

“Before Alissa died, she mentioned something that is connected to the Supreme Alpha, so Jace, I think you should stay out of my life for now because right now, I trust no one, especially those who are closer to the Supreme Alpha.”

“Are you rejecting me?”

His eyes were filled with fear.

“That looks like it.”

A sharp pain shot through my chest when I mentioned that—Liza was in pain.

‘You can’t do this!’

She cried out, stamping on my mind, making my chest hurt. To stop her from hurting me and making me look regretful in front of Jace, I blocked her and focused my attention on him.

“From now on, you are no longer my mate and I reject you.”

Jace’s hand traveled to his chest, the left side where the large portion of the heart was located. That same thing happened to me, but I refused to hold my chest. I had once had the same pain the day he rejected me and though I didn’t let it bother me, the pain was unbearable.

“Why?”

His voice was so low, like he was about to cry.

“I don’t need a controlling mate, i don’t want someone whose family is after my life, and I don’t welcome anyone who won’t support me and only tries to talk me out of how to live my life. Now go, Jace, you are no longer needed here!”

I stormed out of the office, leaving him behind. As I hurried towards the meeting hall, my legs felt so heavy as if a huge rock was tied to my leg, pulling my steps. It wasn’t easy getting there because even my body was shaking from the gravity of what I had just done.

But I never regret sending Jace off, i needed peace and after doing that, my mind was as calm as ice.

‘What have you done?’

Liza cried out the moment we stepped inside the meeting hall.

‘You just rejected our mate. Do you have any idea what that means?’

It means we were mateless. But how is that even an issue? The world mustn’t always revolve around having a partner.

“Stop making this look like a big deal, Liza. We’ve got to focus on the most important thing ahead of us now which is how to deal with our enemies.”

However, Liza was so weak and didn’t want to do anything other than scowl.

I ignored her, sat on a chair, and pressed a red button under the table.

“Go get me my phone from the office.”

The secretary bowed and turned towards the door, then he paused and slowly turned around, looking as if what he was about to say would provoke me.

“What is it?”

“Mr. Jace…”

The way he was pausing amidst sentences made me start suspecting he knew something. Perhaps he must have eavesdropped on us earlier and had figured something out.

“Go on…”

I dropped my elbows on the desk, staring at him. However, he didn’t utter another word, he only turned and scurried out of the hall. A few minutes later, he returned, handed me my phone, and was about to leave again when I stopped him.

“Mr. Jace what?”

I placed the phone on the desk, waiting for his reply, i wasn’t about to let him go until he told me everything I wanted to hear.

“N…nothing…Alpha Aria.”

“You heard something, and you’d better tell me what it is or else…”

Terrifyingly, he dropped to his knees, his palms pressed together, pleading.

“I am so sorry. I didn’t mean to listen to your conversations. I only came to deliver something to you and…”

So he did hear all that Jace and I were talking about. My goodness! I was so sure the news would spread across the city in no time that Jace and I were mates and I had rejected him.

“The audacity!”

I hit the table and shot to my feet.

“When you heard me talking to someone, why didn’t you leave? Why did you stay behind to hear everything?”

That was a bad habit.

“I should cut off your ears so that next time, you won’t…”

“Please spare me.”

He cried out, dragging his knees towards me.

“No, you must be used as a scapegoat so others won’t learn to hear what isn’t their concern.”

When I picked up my phone, he held my hand, crying bitterly that he had families that he had to take care of.

“If you cut off my ears, Alpha Aria, how would I be able to hear the voice of my little child who had just started talking? Please spare me.”

That didn’t move me a bit because I knew he was using that to make me spare him. Meanwhile, I wanted to punish him, to even shut him up so that others wouldn’t hear that. But I couldn’t. He was pitiful.

“I swear that no one will hear a thing about what I heard.”

He said, holding tightly to my phone.

“How do I believe you?”

“I don’t know but you can punish me however you want if you hear this outside.”

He was serious so I had to let him go. As soon as I agreed, he leapt to his feet happily, handed over my phone, and hurried out of the hall.

I sighed deeply, sitting down on the chair. Now someone knows about Jace and me. My only fear was my brothers finding out. They would chase Jace and deal with him and even if I informed them that I had already rejected him, they wouldn’t believe me.

Well, I put the thought aside to deal with it if anything goes south and turned my attention to my phone. As soon as I turned on the wi-fi, Hans’ message popped up.
