Chapter 62: Joke on Them

Jace’s POV

So that was it, that was why his wife didn’t want me to enter the meeting hall because I was going to ruin everything for them.

But jokes on them, no one dares take what belongs to me.

“Are you done blabbing?”

I asked, shutting them up.

“For your information, nobody can take that position from me because it has been passed down from my great-grandfather to my grandfather and to my father so basically, it is now my turn…”

“Are you out of your mind?”

He shouted, pointing his walking stick at me.

“I am not, uncle.”

The name I called sent shock into his heart, visible on his face. Since I grew up and realized he wasn’t my father, I had never once called him ‘uncle’ but that day was different. I was provoked beyond recognition.

“You always said that position wasn’t on your mind so I trained so hard to take over and now you want it back? You must be out of your mind.”

Alex hissed loudly.

“That is what I wanted to say to you, Uncle. You can start thinking of descending the throne and handing it over to me.”

I looked at my wristwatch.

“Probably today because I will be taking over tomorrow. Get the elders ready.”

After saying that, I turned around and left, their harsh words falling on my back.

I hadn’t even gone out of the mansion when Selene came running after me, panting heavily.

“Jace?”

She called, trying to grab my hand but I stepped aside, causing her to nearly fall down.

“Are you going out?”

I folded my arms staring at her as she asked me, waiting for her to scold me since that was what they were good at.

“Can you drop me off at the spa, please? My friend’s mating ceremony is tomorrow and today is the bridal shower, so…”

“No.”

I cut her off.

“The drivers are more than ready to take you everywhere.”

But she didn’t want to go with them, she wanted to go with me.

“Please, Jace, I promise I won’t pester you. You’ll just have to drop me in front of the spa and go.”

She sounded and looked so desperate and I had no choice but to take her.

Inside the car, Selene tried to involve me in a conversation but I kept increasing the radio to make her shut up.

And whenever we stopped at traffic, she would be shifting on the seat, looking around uncomfortably like she was looking out for danger.

I’d wanted to ask why she was doing that but decided to just shut up unless I wanted her to start another topic.

When we stopped at another traffic light, she turned to me, fear visible on her face.

“Jace?”

She called and when I didn’t answer, she continued.

“No matter what happened today, please do not look deep into it, just run for your life.”

I looked at her, my brows raised in curiosity.

“What do you mean?”

“You see that supreme Alpha’s position? It is dangerous. Leave it to Alex and divert your mind to that mindset you’ve had since growing up of not ascending the throne.”

“You just want me to step aside so that your brother could take what belongs to me, right?”

She shook her head fast like she was reading fine.

“Not that. Alex is the only one that would be safe when he ascends that throne. If you do, you will end up like your father: dead.”

“Excuse me? Were you sent to threaten me?”

“I am sorry but that is the truth and truth is always bitter. Please, Jace, do not do this, I love you so much and I can even sacrifice my life for you that was why I followed you out here.”

Before I could ask her what she meant by that, a gunshot echoed, and the bullet pierced through the window, shattering the glass.

Selene screamed my name but unfortunately, she pulled me down before I could pull her down and took the bullet.

Everything went still, and the next second, her blood started dripping on my face.

Terror took over me, I got up, making her fall back on the passenger seat.

“Selene?”

I called, jiggling her, my hands trembling but she didn’t say a word. She was breathing so hard as blood kept flooding out of her forehead where the bullet had gotten her.

“J…jace?”

A smile appeared on her face as she stared at me.

“I am happy that you are the last person I will see before passing and I am honored to die while saving you. Please…stay far away from my father, stay away from my entire family because they are after your life…”

She lifted her hand, caressing my face.

“I love you so much, Jace, so sad I can’t be with you forever.”

Her hand slipped off my face, and gradually, the smile on her face faded.

“Selene?”

I called, jiggled, and tapped, but got no response.

And by the time I managed to get her to the hospital, the doctor confirmed her dead.

I was heartbroken. Heartbroken that Selene died while saving me. She had a lot of dreams she was chasing, a lot she was yet to chase.

Even though she always annoyed me by thinking she was my future mate, I had always rooted for her whenever she came up with a new thing to do.

And the fact that she was killed hurt me the most. That attack was meant for me not her, but to save me, she pressured me to go with her.

If I had known, I wouldn’t have listened to her, I would have just left the mansion without her.

“There he is, he killed my daughter!”

I lifted my head, releasing my hands from my head to see Aunt Tina, my uncle, Alex, and their last daughter all staring at me like I was a murderer.

She charged towards me, grabbed my collar, and pulled me up from the chair with full force.

“Murderer!”

She screamed, crying out loud, drawing the full attention of the people.

“How could you do this to me, Jace? All Selene has ever wanted was to be your mate but you repaid her kindness with this?”

I cracked up, laughing at her words.

Weren’t they the ones who killed their daughter? Weren’t they the ones who sent the thug to kill

Me?

“Stop pointing fingers at me when you know the real murderer of your daughter.”

I yanked her hands off my collar.

“You and your husband took your daughter’s life!”
