Chapter 111 (WHAT LIFE BRINGS)

“Emily, what happened to you? How did you get a child?” Step mum was as calm as the sea. That confused her, she would sworn to anyone that that wasn’t her step Mum and sis.

“He’s my son.” She repeated again. “How?” Step Mum asked. She looked so worried. “I… I,” she sighed. “The job I took, the one that gave me money to pay for Dad’s hospital bills. It was to be a surrogate.” She explained.

“A surrogate?” Step Mum and Tina looked at each other Surprisingly. “Yes,” Emily nodded her head. She bowed down her head and played with her fingers in shame.

Step Mum sighed, she gave Jeff to Tina and knelt in front of Emily. She held Emily’s hand in hers. You could imagine the shock on Emily’s face.

“I’m so sorry Emily, I should have paid attention and asked you the type of a job you got. But I was so selfish to have asked you. I wanted to get rid of you so that I and my daughter would live our lives without worries but I was wrong.” She looked at Tina.

“Tina got sick few months after your Dad’s death. The doctor confirmed she had cancer but it was at an early stage.” Emily looked at Tina who’s eyes was already filled with tears.

“All the money I had finished on her chemotherapy treatment, we ran out of helps. We wanted to reach you but your friend told us she didn’t know here you lived. Your phone was off those moments. I got scared and regretted my actions towards you.” She wiped the tears in her eyes.

“Looking at Tina on the sick bed with no help, I discovered selfishness won’t take a person anywhere. I couldn’t afford the bills again and at last, I sold the house we once lived in.”

“Tina got her surgery, she became cancer free and that was when our struggles begin. No one to give us anywhere to sleep or anything to eat. I went back to our old home and the new owners let us stayed for three days.”

“And the next day after we left the house, I got a call from that man that he wanted to see me urgently. I took Tina along and we went there. That kind hearted soul gave me the papers of this house, he said he found it somewhere hidden under the bed. Your Dad didn’t tell me he owned a house. I took the paper, thanked him and left.”

“When I and Tina came to check out this house some weeks ago, that was on the same day he gave us the paper. I found out the house was so big. You see that house close to ours?” Emily nodded her head.

“It’s part of this house but we have no money and I sold that part of the house. I used the money to open a grocery store and that’s where I and Tina have been feeding from,” she said in tears.

“Emily.” Tina called in tears. “We are sorry for what we did to you.” She apologized. “Please forgive us,” she pleaded. She held Jeff to her chest and knelt on the floor.

“We are so sorry. I thought I was going to die at the hospital without seeing my only sister and ask for her forgiveness,” she cried.

Emily watched them cried and pleaded with her. Tears didn’t escape her eyes but she felt bad for them. She felt sad that they went through that.

She wanted to cry too because it was so touching but her tears refused to come out. She sighed, stood up from the couch and helped Tina up.

“It’s okay, don’t cry again. I’m glad you are okay.” She hugged her and then hugged her step Mum too.

“That k you so much for forgiving us, Emily. You have a kind heart. I didn’t get to know your Mum but I know you took after her,” Emily smiled.

“Emily, where do you stay now?” Tina asked her. “The house down there,” she said. “Which house? Is it the house of the woman that her daughter’s name’s Hanna?” Step Mum asked.

“Yes, Hanna is my cousin. Her Mum is my Mum’s elder sister,” she smiled. “Wow! We live in the same place. But why is the child with you? I thought you’ll have to hand over the child to his parents and then moved on with your life.”

“Yes but somethings happened. His Dad fell in love with me and he didn’t let me go,” she said excitedly. For the fist time, Emily could talk to her step mum freely.

“Awn, please bring him to come visit me. After all, I’m just like a mother to you.” Grandma held her hand. “Yes please, I’ll like to see my in-law,” Tina said too and Emily giggled.

“There’s no one at home and I forgot to lock the door. I’ll come back tomorrow,” Emily said taking Jeff from Tina. “We’ll visit later too and thank your Aunt for taking care of you.” Step mum promised her.

Emily left the house and as she was going back home, her phone started ringing. She brought it out of her pocket and answered it.

“Emily!” She removed the phone to see the caller. It was Belle. “Belle! Oh my God!” she exclaimed. “Where are you?” Emily asked her. “Here!” she saw Belle waving to her in front of the house.

“Oh my God!” She ended the call and increased her pace. “Belle! It’s you.” Emily hurried to her. “I finally found you.” Belle hugged her. “How… How did you know where I lives?”

“It’s a long story. Hi Jeff.” She took Jeff from her.
