The Mischievous CEO Won't Let Me Go
Chapter 101: Why Would He Help Her
Chapter 101
Despite those thoughts and the sudden confusion, Lucy kept flipping the pages. She turned one page after another but her diary only seemed to get bulkier.
And when she pressed on the paper, it felt somehow hard as she neared the blank pages. It wasn’t far now, she could notice it from the dates.
She kept pressing on that hard surface as she flipped the few pages that remained. And as the pages got thinner, the hard surface became more prominent. That spot didn’t flatten like the rest of the page. As if something was lying underneath it.
And when she got to the last page, that something came into view and her breathing hitched and her heartbeat came to a screetching halt in those few seconds.
It was infact, an object. A round object with a red buttons. Her jaws dropped and she blinked at the sight of it.
What was it doing in her diary? Had it been there all along while she thought she had lost it? When did she even put it there?
Lucy rubbed her eyes to make sure she wasn’t seeing wrong. The object that she didn’t want to have anything to do with. That object that Greg had given to her. He had asked her to press it of she needed his help before the engagement.
But she hadn’t. And had even thought she had lost it. What then was it doing in her diary?
Her heart tightened all of a sudden and her vision blurred at the sight of the words written on the page which the red button rested on.
‘Greg said he’ll help me but I don’t want his help. Cedric is a good man, I don’t see why we shouldn’t be engaged. Greg will only spoil things for me, isn’t it? I don’t want to have anything to do with him or this button. Maybe I should throw it away and…’
And that was where her words stopped. The same words she had written inside her diary. She must be holding the button at that time. And someone must have walked in on her and she’d shoved it inside the pages and dropped the diary back inside the drawer.
Reading those same words written by her now, Lucy suddenly realized how much a fool she was. She had forced herself to believe Cedric was a good man despite her instincts. She had written this after his stupid phone call, lying to her that he was only drunk that night an couldn’t control himself.
She had praised him as a good man. How hilarious. A bitter smile graced her lips and she chuckled sadly.
She hadn’t wanted to have anything to do with Greg then. She had thought he would only ruin things for her. While he only wanted to pull her out of the danger. Greg was not the hazard in her path, it had been Cedric all along.
And if she had pressed this button before the engagement, who knew where she would be now?
She would be anywhere, but definitely not in this predicament.
Greg would have done something to pull her out of this predicament. He wouldn’t have had to take action in the engagement night itself. Things would have turn out in her favor and she would never have found herself in all these. She wouldn’t have had to face the brutal reality of Cedric’s true colors at the engagement.
And she would have fled from his grips with Greg’s help. Greg wouldn’t waste time in saving her then. Not when he had taken the risk of saving her during the engagement.
She had fooled herself to think that he would only cause her trouble, when he had only wanted to help her.
He had asked if she was happy and when she didn’t say yes, he carried her out of the engagement hall without caring that everyone was there. The reporters were there. And the whole town was watching.
And she even had the guts to blame him after that. She hadn’t appreciated what he did and flee his house like a coward she was. Having in mind that her parents would at least understand her, when she’d only come here to be met with their wrath.
And she’d still blamed him after that. She blamed him for what happened. But despite that, he took her again to his home, because he didn’t want her to go out to a city where she had a high chance of getting lost.
Even if he was mad at her, he didn’t show it.
The only thing he thought of was making things right and bringing her back to her parents. And he had taken her in after she had shown her disapproval to that.
He never gave up trying to help her. He was too selfless, he didn’t even ask for anything in return. All he wanted was to make her happy with no strings attached. And she’d stepped on that happiness and still let herself be consumed with worries about her parents. They’d finally forgave her now. And their forgiveness came with a price. She had to marry Cedric and even though she had a plan in mind, the worries and fears never left her. And the sight of this red round object now. It only added more to her negative feelings. Now she could feel something else. Another feeling was added to those bundle of emotions. Regret.
It was too late to have any regret, but she help feeling it. In fact, she wanted to bask in that regret and keep reminding herself of what a fool she was.
Now that things were too late, would he think of helping her again? That wasn’t even a question.
Why would he help her? He didn’t owe her anything.
He must be tired of helping her again and again. Wasn’t that why he didn’t come to get her? He give any care that she didn’t go back to him. He was, otherwise, releived that she was out of his life.
