Chapter 108: Take Me With You

Greg’s fists loosened at the sight and something pulled at his heartstrings. He lost all sense if composure in that instant and he staggered forward.

His hand shook as his fingers reached forward to grace her cheek. Shit! She was crying and in pain. He carefully tucked the hair that covered her cheek away and his heart kept tightening as more streaks of tears revealed themselves. Her brows furrowed now and then and her face was twisting in pain. She was mumbled some words in her sleep. Incoherent words that seemed to be the source of her nightmares.

“Lucy.” His voice came out strained. It almost sounded pain. A reflection of the strange feeling currently tugging at his heart.

He lowered himself on the bed beside her and found himself carefully wiping the tears even as they continued flowing.

Hell! He hadn’t expected to see this. He had expected anything else but this. Why was she in pain? Was she really in need of help? Was that why she had pressed the button?

But why would she need help?

Her small face felt like a baby’s against his palm and she leaned in to his touch, despite still mumbling the word. She had felt his presence and she was leaning in for comfort.

He’d be damned if he didn’t offer her that comfort. He would be a jerk if he admitted that he was still mad at her. Hell! He was now mad at himself. Even though he didn’t know the source of her pain. He was mad that he couldn’t do anything to stop those tears from falling.

Greg stroked her hair, unable to look away. Hopefully, that movement would comfort her and chase away whatever her nightmares were about. And he could some progress. Because as he kept stroking her hair and wiping the tears, she stired and his hands paused.

His whole being tensed, he didn’t know why. But as she stired and flickered her eyes, he couldn’t move anymore. And he just had to wait and watch, he could even hear his own heartbeat.

Her eyes kept flickering and she murmured some words. He could hear them clearly now.

“Greg.”

Her soft voice laced with pain and anguish, floated to his ears. And his heartbeat was chased into another frenzy of a race.

She had been calling out his name.

And as her eyelids flickered until they were half open, she kept murmuring that name. His name. And she did the most unexpected thing. The diary dropped from her hands and she reached forward to search for his hands. The hands that had been her comfort moments ago.

Only when her skin touched his again, did Greg snapped out of his trance. Her soft hands gripped his hands and she attempted to move it forward to her face.

But then, she frowned. Because Greg was sure when was now half-awake. A deep frown settled on her forehead while his hands was still in hers. As if sensing something was wrong.

Her murmurs and sobs stopped all of a sudden and her eyes opened wide, completely. And his heart skipped a bit at that sight. Staring into her now opened eyes, not only made him madder at whatever it was that made her cried, but it also increased the anguish that had a tight grip on his heart.

Her eyes were rimmed red and he could now notice the eyebags. What the hell had she gone through?

“G–Greg?”

Her voice reached his eyes and he brought his attention back to the present. Her frown deepened as she stared at him. And she robbed her eyes, as if wiping off the sleep.

The confusion in her eyes grew as she gave him a dazed look. Her lips parted and her pupils expanded in shock. She probably thought she was dreaming.

Her eyes dropped to their now intertwined hands and her lips trembled, as if she was trying to get a word out. And the only word she let out was his name. Again.

“Greg, you’re here?” She saiid in a hoarse voice. Then she left his hands and both hands came to touch his face. “You’re really here…” There was so much confusion in her voice and she gave him a look of disbelief.

Greg found that amusing. And his lips curled up at her question. “Of course, I’m here, Princess.” He let out a soft laugh. “Because you pressed the button.”

“I– I did?” The confusion in her voice grew and she stilled for a few seconds. Then as if realizing something, her eyes went wide again.

“I—I pressed the button,” she stammered, returning to reality. “I did press the button.” Her voice got clearer. “A-And you’re here. Y–You came.”

Her last words came out in disbelief. And Greg knew why. Because honestly, he still wasn’t aware of what he was doing here. And why he was because she had pressed the button.

But hell! That didn’t matter at the moment. Nothing else mattered. She was right here in front of him. And she looked miserable, if not more than he had been. And he blamed himself. The heck! Why had he left her alone? Why had he been thinking all that shit in his head. Seeing her now, he was a hundred percent sure— no, he was a thousand times certain. If she wasn’t living through hell then he’d be damned to think otherwise.

And adding more to his guilt, she threw herself into his arms and her sobs returned. She sobbed louder this time.

“You’re really here, Greg. You’re here.” Lucy sobbed and wrapped her arms around him. “Y-You came because— because…” She trailed off in her words and stared up to give him a teary eyed look. Then she went back to hugging him again. This time her sobs got heavier and heart wrenching. “Take me with you, Greg. Please don’t leave me here. I—I don’t want to be here, I don’t want to marry him, I— I c–can’t. Please take me with you, I need your help.”
