The Mischievous CEO Won't Let Me Go
Chapter 111: A Long Ride
Chapter 111
Was it because he didn’t want the guilt in his heart to seize. Because more than anything at the moment, he had the urge to bang his head against the steering wheel.
And if she wasn’t inside the car with him at this moment, he would have run himself to any nearby tree and make a collision.
That way, every pain he would feel might make him feel somehow better. How could he let this happen? He had been the biggest fool in the world for completely three days.
He had been blaming her and thinking of her in every negative way, only to satisfy his jealousy. Not knowing that she was suffering. Not knowing that she had been living through hell.
She wanted to be with him. She asked him to take her away. And hell, he had read things wrong. He had been a jerk and only considered only his emotions.
To hell with self-control and whatever. Even if she was a living hazard and a walking danger to him. He would exercise the greatest control ever known. He might end up hurting himself in the end. But hell! He would never hurt her. He would never live her alone in this state. And he sure as hell wouldn’t run anymore.
Because he had been running all along from his fears. If he couldn’t have her, loving her was dangerous. That was the damn thing that had been in his mind. Who said that wasn’t possible?
He’d be a real man and be with her nomatter what. Even if she wouldn’t reciprocate his feelings. As long as she wanted to be with him, it was enough.
This was a big challenge, and he would take it headon. He’d take every kind of challenge at the moment, as long as she’d be happy.
He wouldn’t force her. And damnit! He would hide that feeling well. He was a master of secrets. This was a minor thing compared to all things that never left his mouth. He’d seal his lips and never utter the words. As long as she would stay. And he would keep on seeing her always, and knowing that she was safe.
“Greg.”
He was lost in his thoughts when her voice broke the silence in the car.
His eyes strayed from the road to her and he found her eyes fixed on him. Her eyes never left him since they left the mansion. Her happiness nwas reflected in them. And they were shining so brightly, it was blinding.
When Lucy got his full attention, she went on. “Thank you for saving me,” she murmured softly. “I owe you a lot. And I hope I can repay you someday.”
“You don’t need to repay me with anything.” Greg found himself smiling at her.
And she didn’t need to thank him. She should be balming him instead. She should be mad at him that he hadn’t come and saved her earlier. That he’d waited until she asked for his lips. He should have sensed something was off when her phone couldn’t get through. On the contrary, he had thought she was trying to evade him because she had ditched him.
The only thing she could repay him with right now was if she stayed by his side. And he would protect her. From any scumbag that tried to ruin her life.
“You’re so good to me, Greg.” Her voice reached his ears again and she dropped her head. “I should have known your heart is always in the right place. You have a generous heart. You’re like my guardian angel.”
Was that what she thought? Greg chuckled. Her guardian angel. He liked that. He didn’t think himself generous. He didn’t have a generous heart. And his heart had always been in the right place, but that was only for her.
He lifted one hand from the steering wheel and used it to stroke her hair. “I’m only good to you, Princess. You deserve all the kindness in this world.”
And he would turn into the nicest person in the world. He’d squeeze out every kind in him and shower it on her. He was going to give it to only her.
Lucy nodded and she covered her mouth to suppress a yawn. Greg could see that she was fighting the sleep. She wanted to remain awake. He didn’t know why. Was it because she was so happy?
Her happiness was contaminating. And he found himself feeling the same. Despite his desire to keep the guilt in his heart and remind himself of what a jerk he had been.
A glimmer of happiness flickered in his heart. And it kept expanding. It expanded to the extent that it had completely occupied the space in his chest. And as the car drove through the empty street, he slowed it down to savor this moment. Because he wanted it to last, forever.
“Go to sleep, Princess.” He kept stroking her hair while his other hand was on the steering wheel. “We’ve got a long ride ahead of us.”
And she gave him a nod. She nodded her head obediently and released her yawn. Then she simmered against the chair, with her face still on his side profile.
From the corners of his eyes, she shifted for a while to find a comfortable position and his palm ended up being her pillow.
Her eyes fluttered for a few seconds and she finally closed them, her soft breathing was the only sound prominent in the car.
Throughout the whole ride, Greg kept his palm supporting her. And by the time they arrived at his house, daylight was about to break. It was four in the morning.
He pulled the car to a halt in the parking lot. And scooped her again in his arms, careful not to wake her.
She mumbled something in her sleep and nuzzled her head against his chest while both her hands were now wrapped on the tiny book. Her diary.
