Chapter 112: The Gentlest And Most Sensible Man

His eyes lingered on her face and another smile graced his lips. And as he stepped inside the house, to the living room and up the stairs, he couldn’t take his eyes off her.

This felt surreal. It was still like a dream. Maybe he was dreaming about all this. He had broke his promise and drunk those wines. And everything was all his hallucinations.

But hell, this wasn’t a dream. Everything had been real. The party. The alarm. And her. It was all real.

And as he stepped up the stairs— Wait. The stairs.

Greg halted in his steps and stood in the middle of the stairs. What the heck was he doing?

He let out a chuckle. He had promised himself not to scare her and here he was, about to break his promise. Why was he taking her to his room instead of hers?

But damnit! He couldn’t remember how many promises he had broken recently. He could hold a world’s record for having the most unreliable thoughts.

But this was one he wasn’t going to break. Come hell or high water. He was never going to do anything to scare her.

Therefore, Greg turned around and made his way down the stairs again. All while his eyes were glued to her face. As she slept peacefully, almost like a baby, he couldn’t look away. No more frowns or horrible nightmares. That had all changed in one night. And he was more than glad to know that he had been the source of that. Her peacefulness.

He pushed the guestroom’s door with his leg and sauntered inside with her held securely in his hands.

Well— he’d never thought he would step foot in this room again. Throught those days, he had always forced himself to believe this door didn’t exist and she never lived here. His efforts, nonetheless, had proved furtile. As she had almost always been in his mind. He could never get her out of his vision.

And he was never again going to try to. She was here, and it was all that mattered.

He settled her onto the bed and drew up the comforter to her chest. And he lingered. He lingered for a while after taking the diary from her hands and dropping it on the bedside table.

The place where he had just noticed the ring still sitting on. Another realization. She never had any idea of not returning.

She had in fact left the ring here. And if he had stepped foot here during those three days and saw the ring, he wouldn’t have leapt to that conclusion.

She had planned all along to return. To come back to him.

A deep sigh left his throat and he took his eyes off the ring. He focused on her instead and he moved forward, slowly.

He hesitated for a few seconds before he sank down on the bed, beside her.

Just tonight, he wanted to hold her. He had to hold her. To comfort her. And maybe to comfort himself.

Because she didn’t seem like she needed any comfort at this moment. She looked contented. Contented and happy that he had saved her once more.

But hell! He was the one that was saved. She had saved him by pressing that button. If she hadn’t, he would have lost her because of his foolishness, and he was never going to forgive himself.

And as if she had been waiting for him to do that, the moment he lay beside her, she shifted closer and buried her head on his chest.

Maybe she thought him a pillow. Greg didn’t mind. He would use this short time that was left for the morning to descend. He will be her pillow wholeheartedly. And find the comfort he had been yearning.

So he lifted his arm and engulfed her in the gentlest of hugs. He embraced her without letting his eyes flutter nor blink. He would use these few hours that was left to watch her to his heart’s content. He’d hold and cuddle her. And he’d let himself drown in this happiness. Even sleep wasn’t going to deprive him of that. He wouldn’t close his eyes. Because after the break of dawn, he’d be the gentlest and most sensible man alive.

When Lucy woke up, the dawn had break and it was late into the morning. She had overslept. Her eyes stayed fixed on the white ceiling and she let out a sigh.

She still couldn’t believe what mess she was saved from. Everything that happened a few hours ago was still like a movie in her eyes. A dream even.

It was hard to believe the kind of luck that struck her. It felt unreal.

If Greg hadn’t saved her, she would still been in the mansion. She would have said yes to her parents by now. And maybe, Cedric would have been on his way dragging her to the registry.

He wouldn’t waste time to have their marriage registered. And the next thing would be the wedding’s preparations.

Her body shuddered and she shook the thoughts off. No more thinking of Cedric. She was with Greg now. And she was never going to step out of this house. She was never going to go anywhere where she might have a chance of meeting Cedric.

She’d make sure she never left his sight. As long as he wanted, she’d be in his care even for eternity.

She got off the bed and her eyes landed on the bedside table. Her diary. It was the only thing she had brought with her. Not even her sleeper or her phone.

Her phone was still confiscated. It was with her parents.

Well— she wouldn’t be bombarded with their phone calls anyways. It was good not to have her phone at this moment. And she also wouldn’t have to see Cedric’s creepy texts. She had lived without her phone for three days. She could also do that now.
