Chapter 60: Funny

But her reply was stranger than his question.

“Yes, it helps me sleep?”

“What?” Greg furrowed his brows. “You were watching tv in your sleep?”

“No.” Her lips curved into a smile and she yawned. “The noise helps me sleep. I love it when the tv is on.”

That sounded more stranger. Greg’s frown deepened. But he didn’t let his mind linger on her weird habit and he lifted his hand to stroke her hair.

“Do you want to sleep more?” He asked, but she shook her head slowly.

Then she lowered her head, and when she looked up again, her expression had changed to that of gloom. He could see the sadness reflecting in her eyes.

“What is wrong,” he asked, concerned and worried, and used his hand to hold her chin.

She fiddled with her hands and whatever she wanted to tell him, never made its way pass her trembling lips. That wasn’t good. He didn’t like what her sad look was doing to him. His blood was boiling already and he wondered if someone came here behind his back or if someone told her anything to make her like this.

“Is it the food delivery?” He found himself asking.

That must have sounded funny to her and she smiled and shook her head. Still, whatever she wanted to tell him, she didn’t seem ready to. She was hesitating.

And Greg couldn’t help but ask if she was alright. But she answered she was fine, which ebbed some of his worry. Whatever it was she wanted to say, it could wait. He wouldn’t prode further.

So he took one of the snacks and started eating it. “Get ready, we’ll go to the boutique,” he told her and she quickly nodded then stood up and hurried off, as if she was trying to get away.

Greg turned back to eating the snack, still finding her behavior weird. He thought back to his promise and shook his head. He would take her there, since she seemed desperate. But he would make sure it was the last time she stepped foot on that area.

He thought back again to the sad look on her face and an uncontrollable sigh escaped his lips. After waiting for a while and she didn’t show up, he stood up and made his way to the guest room.

There, he found her sitting in front of the mirror and staring at her own reflection in a daze. She looked so worried, her face was downcast and her lips were pressed together. Was she thinking of her family? He wondered.

Or did she regret being here? She seemed fine this morning and he didn’t like that he didn’t know what was bordering her. So many things had started conjuring up in his mind and it was unsettling for him.

She didn’t even know he had came in until he walked forward and stood behind her. She looked up and stared at him through the mirror and as if avoiding his eyes contact, she dropped her head immediately.

Greg moved to the side and made her look up at him by lifting her chin. “What happened?” He inquired softly.

She didn’t avoid his gaze this time. She didn’t even look away, but bit her lips. His eyes went to that direction immediately and he scolded himself to concentrate.

“Lucy.” He addressed her seriously.

Lucy kept on chewing at her lower lip and he had to pull at the smooth flesh on her chin to stop her from doing that.

“I’m scared,” she finally admitted after a long silence. And after that, she said nothing else.

That word pulled at Greg’s heart string. His heart tightened from the look in her eyes and the fact that she had opened up. He pulled her up into his arms and wrapped her in a hug.

What was she scared of? Was it the fact that she was here with him or something else? She didn’t trust him initially and he doubt if she did trust him even now. She had accused him of ruining everything, her life included. Yet, here she was staying in his house and standing in front of him. What if she wasn’t really happy here? Could he afford to let her go even if that would be the best thing for him to?

“Don’t be scared,” he murmured above her hair and he could feel her hugging him back. “I won’t let anything happen to you. I’ll protect you from everyone.”

‘My self included’ he wanted to add. And he was saying that more to himself than to her. It was a vow he had embedded deep in his heart.

When he let her go, her expression was much calmer but her eyes still held a little bit of worry. She sat back on the chair and faced the mirror again. She had wore a dress already. The dress he saw her in yesterday.

“Greg, why do you have this here?” She asked all of a sudden while pointing to the makeup tools on the table.

Greg picked one tool up and twirled it with his fingers. “They’re for my sister, you can have them.”

“Huh?” She frowned and looked up at him in confusion. “Does your sister come here?”

“Yeah,” Greg answered casually and leaned against the wall with folded hands to get a proper view of her face. “She’s not in town, she loves to crash in here whenever she visits.”

Although, the whole family lived here. His sister moved to City H with her husband. And who else to disturb when she comes to visit except for her favorite brother who was him of course.

“Oh, that’s great.” She turned her attention back to the mirror. “I also have my own room at my brothers’” she said with a look of nostalgia then she turned to him and asked.

“Greg, do you miss your sister?”

That question sounded funny to him. Except for his cute little niece, he never as much missed anyone. “Nope,” he answered her question.
