Chapter 76: Marrying Her

“It wasn’t only your brothers.” Her father went on. “Cedric’s words have a part to play in it. You should be grateful.”

“He’s right there.” Her mother tugged at her arm, her smile widening. She gave Cedric a proud look before turning back to Lucy. “You can’t believe this. But Cedric’s willing to let everything gone. You are going to get married and all will turn out well.”

Her mother’s words hit her like a ton of bricks and Lucy’s head snapped to Cedric. In fact, she wasn’t even surprised.

After what he mentioned at the bar last night about her belonging to him, she had expected to hear something similar. But marriage, and not another engagement? Both ideas carried the same enormity but she never thought he would directly speak about marriage.

“You will get married to him and every rumor will be cleared.” Her father’s words snapped her back to her senses. “And that should happen as soon as possible. This way, no one will speak of what happened again.”

Lucy blinked and she parted her lips. How could Cedric think of marrying her even in this circumstances? Was he hellbent on having her for himself?

He obviously did not love her. Why did he want her so bad?

“Lucy.” Her mother gave her hand a slight squeez. “If you get married, no one will talk about what happened at your engagement. Cedric’s a good boy and he’s kindhearted for coming back for you. Ha has convinced us it wasn’t your fault and he was to blame. Because he happened to have some fudge with those guys, that is why they decided to take revenge by ruining his engagement. And he isn’t going to be petty to part from you because of that.”

Lucy tried not to look in Cedric’s direction. How could he tell her parents that kind of lie. He had lay things out in such a way that her parents would really think she had no business with Greg and all that happened was because of him.

Greg was trying to get at him by using her as the bait that was why they sabotaged the engagement. And he would be happy to have her back. And marry her even.

The fear crawled back to her heart and she could feel those tremors returning. Her eyes darted to have one glimpse at his face. He was smiling. A gentle and harmless smile. How could he be this cunning.

If she hadn’t suffered in his hands, she would have said it was a lie that this was the same guy that tried to have his way with a girl last night in a bar. And now was the time to let her parents know what kind of person he truly was. She was scared and yet she hated it. She hated the fact that he would lie to her parents without batting an eye. Whatever were his intentions, he had no right to fool her parents.

“The business worl is tough, Lucy.” Cedric spoke for the first time. “I should have been prepared to encounter such kind of challenge. I didn’t see it coming, I swear. Otherwise, I would have done my best to protect you. It is all my fault. I hope you forgive me.”

Lucy gripped her bag, each of his words slicing at her heart. How could someone be so shameless? Did he get a degree in lying or what?

“Cedric is just being cordial.” Her mother shook her head and beamed. “It’s a coincidence that those guys also have a connection with him. We have thought you’ve gone behind us and conspired with them. It’s a good thing you didn’t go to their place. Gina told us you’ve been staying with her.”

Lucy gulped and she lowered her head. That only meant even Gina had come here to plead for her. She even told her parents she hadn’t been in Greg’s home. Was that to make them less worried. Even though her father had willingly send her out, he wouldn’t be happy with the knowledge that she had been living with another man. He’d be relieved to hear Gina said she’d been living in her place instead.

She lifted her head and her eyes wandered between the three people in the room. She still didn’t make eye contact with Cedric and she focused on her parents happy expressions. Despite her father not smiling, his expression was relaxed and their was a hint of happiness in his eyes.

Her father didn’t like smiling anyways. His current expression was enough to tell that he was ecstatic inside to have her back.

And something else was evident in his expression. His desire to get back together with his family. He must have thought that dream was long gone when the engagement got destroyed. But now that Cedric was back, that hope was once again reignited inside him. It shone in every of his features. He was glad that things were turning out well for them once more.

And her mother, she was all smiles and laughter. She never stopped holding her hands and kept giving her that excited look.

Lucy bit her lips and looked away from her parents’ expression. When she sneaked a look at Cedric, his eyes were fixed on her and his face held a gentle smile.

She looked somewhere else by focusing on her fingers instead.

“Lucy.” Her mother’s soft voice reached her ears and she gave her hand a gentle tug. “You also think is a good idea, right?”

Her mother whispered while her eyes darted to her father as if afraid of any change in his expression. Lucy’s silence must obviously be bordering them. And her mother smiled at her again after giving Cedric a smile.

She nudged Lucy for an answer and that was when Lucy lifted her head.
