The Mischievous CEO Won't Let Me Go
Chapter 77: She’s Just Shocked
Chapter 77
Glancing between her parents’ expressions, it now felt like a heavy weight on her trying to get the words out. As if an heavy force was preventing them from leaving her throat.
And the unfamiliar whispers. Voices started whispering in her head and she didn’t like those words that flooded her senses.
‘Don’t do it, your parents are going to hate you.’
‘If you deny, you’re going to ruin everything.’
‘Do you think they’ll listen to what you have to say?’
Lucy tried so hard to dispel those words from her thoughts. Her heart was hammering against her chest.
Her mother’s expression was slowly changing to a worries one. A huge frown creased her face and her father’s frown, even though it was barely noticeable, his expression was unlike seconds ago.
Cedric’s face was the one that held the deepest frown. And Lucy focused on him instead. She couldn’t afford to stare into her parents’ eyes and do this.
She’d rather face Cedric and focus on her anger instead. Anger that he had the guts to look down on and fool her parents.
“Father, Mum.” She lowered her head and murmured. “I don’t think I can do this… I don’t want to marry Brother Cedric.”
A hush fell inside the room only the gasps of her mother could be heard. The two man stared at her in utter shock, even her father was flabbergasted.
He hadn’t expected her to say that and astonishment was boldly written on his expression.
And Cedric, no one had their eyes on his but his expression had darkened. Only Lucy could see that.
“What is the meaning of Th-This?” Her mother looked as if she hadn’t heard her right and she let out a soft laugh. “Now, come on, Dear. How could you play this kind of joke at this moment?” She gave a nervous laugh. “This may sound all too sudden to you. You didn’t expect us to mention marriage, right?”
Her mother tried to reason with her. She knew very well how Lucy dreaded the idea of marriage. So she thought either it was due to the sudden shock that had her uttered something like this. And Lucy could see in her eyes. She was urging her to admit she was joking.
“Don’t listen to her, Son.” Her mother turned to Cedric after another silence. “I think Lucy’s just shocked. Maybe we should—”
“We will leave you together. Talk about it.” Her father completed her mother’s words. He was staring straight at Lucy, as if reading her expression.
Unlike her mother, it wasn’t a question that her father didn’t think she was joking. His fists were balled, as if fighting to keep his temper in check. And he gave Lucy a look that indicated a lot of things. She shouldn’t disappoint them this time. Otherwise—
Lucy didn’t know what her father might do this time. He would probably send her out again. Or ask her never to return. That was what she hated most. But right now, what scared her most was not only her parents’ wrath, but Cedric’s deception.
She couldn’t live with this kind of man.
“Uncle is right.” Cedric broke out of his shock and quickly changed his expression. “After all, we just got engaged.” He emphasized the word engaged and pressed his lips into a smile while his eyes came to Lucy’s fingers. At the sight of no ring, he only frowned for a few seconds before his expression turned into an amiable one once more. “Lucy and I will discuss about it. We can’t border you with these daunting discussion. We’ll come up with a date and let you know—”
“No.” Lucy’s voice came out weak. Even though she had meant to cut him off sharply. But her parents’ expressions were wanting her courage. And the many anxieties in her heart at this moment. If she refused this time, she had a lot to lose. She would lose her parents’ love again. She might never get to step foot here again. She didn’t want all that. But one thing was for sure, she didn’t want Cedric either.
She pried her hands reluctantly from her mother’s hold and rose to her feet. Her nerves were a wreck inside and she took in her parents’s expression, cautiously.
“F-Father, M-Mum,” she murmured and gave them a nervous look. “I can’t marry him.” She pointed a shaking finger at Cedric. “And I wasn’t at Gina’s. I was with Greg all this time. I don’t want to live with Cedric, I only want—”
“What nonsense are you spouting!?” Her father’s word made her flinch and Lucy cowered.
She kept her head lowered and fidgeted with her clothes.
Right! Her earlier fears was coming through. Her mother was still confused, trying to wrap her head around what was unfolding. And her father was in rage already. Would she even be able to carry on with this?
“Henry?” Her mother shook her head in disbelief and gave another laugh. “Let’s live the kids alone. I know Lucy is making things up. Gina would not lie to us. Let them have a talk and sort things out.” She went to hold the man’s arm to walk away with him while giving Lucy a pleading look as if begging her not to make any trouble.
As her parents stood up to leave, Lucy glanced at Cedric. Surprisingly, he wasn’t fazed. Even if he was mad at this moment, he didn’t show it. There was even a hint of smile on his face as he stared at Lucy. But his eyes were delivering a different message. He was daring her to go on and spoil things. He was giving her the same kind of look she had only seen for the first time that night on their engagement.
Lucy cut her gaze from him and faced her parents that were about to walk away.
“Father, Mum, please listen.” She scurried to them and held her mother’s hand, while her eyes darted between the couple.
“I don’t want to marry him, he’s a bad person.” She shook her head rapidly and sobbed. “I’m speaking the truth. I’ve been staying all this time at Greg’s. We’re living together. And you can’t believe what happened last night—”
