The Mischievous CEO Won't Let Me Go
Chapter 98: He Was Clever
Chapter 98
Lucy took in a deep breath and stared blankly at the ceiling. If she had her phone and told Gina what was going on, she was sure her best friend would come up with the best advice. Or even a few words to boost her courage and go on with the plan. There wasn’t any plan better than this one she was about to execute.
She couldn’t get to Gina or go to her. Even though they practically lived on the same street. When she noticed that Jonah was no longer standing in front of her door, which was a day ago, she had rejoiced in ecstasy. Who knew he was only transferred to the large door.
He was keeping guard there. Because she had attempted to go out of the large door and take a stroll around the mansion. Well, he didn’t let her out. So the prospect of visiting Gina was even out of the question.
If Gina had known she was here, she would have barged in and helped her sort out her thoughts.
Sleep was far from Lucy’s eyes as her mind was bombarded with many thoughts. And after staring blankly at the ceiling for a long time, she sat up properly on the bed and leaned against the headboard.
The comforter slid off and she wrapped both hands around her knees while staring into the distance. And when her eyes went to the gifts boxes in a corner, a sigh left her lips and she glanced away quickly. A remainder of that engagement. And how the hard truth hit her that Cedric was a bad person.
Maybe it was those remainders that kept holding her back from proceeding with her plans. If he had his mind set on marrying her this much, was he really going to agree to a divorce?
Wasn’t he going to make things hard for her? It was scary enough that he wouldn’t back down and insisted on having her even after what happened at the engagement. Would he let her go after all this?
A slight knock came from the door and a few seconds later, Ara came in. And Lucy wondered why she wasn’t in their quarters already. It was almost midnight, she should be asleep by now.
“Young Miss, you’re still awake?” Ara stared at her with worry.
Lucy gave her a nod and shifted back on the bed and Ara sat down, facing her.
“I’ve thought I would find you awake,” Ara murmured. “That is why I’ve returned.”
Lucy stayed silent and nimbled at her lower lips. She knew why Ara was here. She was going to ask her the same words. The exact words she had asked her a while ago when she brought her diner.
“Master and Madam are getting impatient.” Ara started in a soft voice. “And time is also running out…” She trailed off and sighed. “Haven’t you made up your mind, Young Miss?”
Lucy shook her head and focused her gaze on her feet. “It’s still the same story, Ara. I can’t say it. I don’t know how.”
“But you want to say it, right?” Ara held her hands. “I know you have come to a decision.”
She had long came to a decision. Lucy’s head dropped further. Wasn’t it the best decision after all? She had came to the decision but a lot of things kept holding her back.
“I don’t want you to worry about anything, Young Miss.” Ara squeezed her hands and Lucy lifted her head to stare at her. “Haven’t I promised you I won’t let anything happen to you? I promise. I’ll do anything to make sure we succeed in this plan.”
“I know.” Lucy nodded and tried to smile at her. But she couldn’t even force a smile at this moment.
She felt like a coward, acting like this. She should have confident in Ara and say the words already. Ara had kept reassuring her with these same words since she came up with the plan. Why couldn’t she just give in already and push the fears away.
“And you know time is not by our side.” Ara continued. “Master Cedric keeps coming here everyday. If you prolong things and take long before you agree, don’t you think he’ll suspect something? He’ll start to question why you only agreed after a long time.”
Lucy’s brows furrowed and she gave the maid a pensive look. Ara words were correct and it made her heart stopped beating for a few seconds. What if Cedric got suspicious? If she took long before she finally agreed, he might think she had an ulterior motive and might be plotting against him. Which wasn’t actually wrong.
And if he got suspicious, he would put his guard up and it would end up ruining their plans. Everything would be a waste then. And the freedom she was fighting for would be snatched from her before she knew it.
Why hadn’t she thought of that?
Cedric was clever, it wouldn’t be a surprise if he got sensitive and found something was off. After all, he was a master at playing tricks on people. It would be hard for him not to realize that someone was playing tricks on him.
Especially her. She had outright rejected him in front of her parents. If it took her a long time before she agreed, he might not only take it as a sign that her tantrums were finally over. He might think she had been having ideas withing those times.
“It’s alright, Young Miss. It’s only an assumption, you don’t have to get worked up over it,” Ara cajoled her and patted her hand which she was still holding.
And Lucy stared down at her hands to find out they were shaking. Well, why wouldn’t she?
