The President's Daring Wife
Chapter 29: Arrest Her
Chapter 31
Eve’s grandfather and Ethan’s grandfather were about to play chess. The duo did not notice them even when they approached the table.
Eve shook her head, wondering about their obsession with chess. Because even during her wedding ceremony with Ethan, they didn’t cease to compete there.
“Ah! Big Sis! It’s Big Sis!”
The first person that noticed them was one of her sisters sitting across the table.
“Big Sis, is this really you? Am I dreaming?” Eve’s other sister stood up and exclaimed. Her father stared at her in shock and her grandfather stood up.
“The heavens must have blessed me tonight. My favorite granddaughter is here, and I’m about to beat this Old Man.” He wrapped Eve in a firm hug.
“Evelyn, you silly girl. Just because we sent you off to this boy doesn’t mean that you can’t visit us. It has been many months. Why haven’t you come to see us yet?”
“Big Sis!” Her sisters left their chairs and came to her side.
“You look so different, Big Sis. Wow, you’re so pretty.”
“Brother-in-law is so handsome. I wonder if you’ll give birth to a boy.”
“I missed you both, Cassie and Carla.” Eve pulled out of her grandfather’s embrace and hugged the hyper-excited twins. And the girls looked shocked for a second before retaining their cheerful expressions.
“Big Sis, you’re nicer today.”
“See, you’re even smiling.”
“Tell us, Big Sis, what happened to you?”
Eve bit her lips as guilt crept up her heart. Due to Mia’s influence in the past, she wasn’t very open to her sisters despite them hovering around her all the time.
“Leave her alone, Girls.” Her father stood up and hugged her. “Evelyn, I can see that we didn’t make a bad decision by giving your hand to the Anderson family.”
“Ethan treats me well, Dad.” Eve smiled and hugged him back.
“That’s right. My Grandson here is a filial boy. In this whole city, your granddaughter wouldn’t have found a more perfect husband,” Ethan’s grandfather boasted to her grandfather.
“I think you want to say your grandson wouldn’t have found a more perfect wife,” Eve’s grandfather boomed.
“Are you challenging me, Old Man?”
“That is right. And I’ll prove it to you by beating you in this game!”
“You are looking down on me, Old Man. Even in our military days, everyone knew that I don’t lose a bet.”
As their grandfathers bantered, Ethan greeted her parents and they both sat down.
“Big Sis, we’re listening.”
“Tell us, what is the secret.”
Her sisters gave her eager looks and Eve could feel Ethan’s palm on her lap.
“Stop it,” she whispered.
“Stop what?” Ethan whispered back.
“Aren’t they so sweet?”
“Brother-in-law is so handsome.”
The twins giggled.
“Big Sis, if you give birth to a boy, will he look exactly like brother-in-law?”
“Can I adopt him, Big Sis?”
Eve swatted Ethan’s hand away, pushing his palm off her lap. She opened her mouth to answer her sisters’ questions, but a loud voice interrupted her.
“Grandpa! Grandpa! Can you imagine what this girl is doing to this Young Master!?” Matt stormed to the table and glared at Eve. “Great, your grandfather is even here.”
He walked to Eve’s grandfather and said, “Old Man, you’ll soon hear the news that your granddaughter has lost her eyesight. She doesn’t treat this Young Master well. She makes my Big Bro beat me constantly, and she thinks she can send me on errands.”
“Evelyn, is that true?” Her grandfather looked away from his game and asked.
“Don’t listen to him, Grandpa. Matt is just being a wayward boy. Someone needed to put him in his place.”
“Of course, I’m not listening to him. You’re doing a great job, Evelyn. This Old Man has spoiled him too much. And if my granddaughter loses her eyesight.” He pointed his cane at Matt. “Your grandfather will have to answer to me.”
“Don’t let that bother you, Grandpa.” Eve scowled at Matt. “If he dares threatens me with my eyesight, I’ll make sure he loses his for real.”
“Argh! Grandpa, you see they’re bullying me. In this whole city, no one has ever looked down on this Young Master.”
“You have gone too far by threatening her. Don’t you know that she has made me an important promise? If you make her lose her eyesight, how can she birth my great-grandchildren in good condition?” His grandfather glared at him.
“You’re taking her side too, Grandpa! That’s not fair. This Young Master will not rest until he seeks justice for himself. Bah! I’m out of here.”
As Matt stormed off, peace descended on the table.
“As for you, Old Man.” Ethan’s grandfather picked up a chess piece. “I’ll make you lose ten rounds for bullying my grandson. I’m only having mercy on you because your granddaughter will make me happy soon.”
“Bring it on, Old Man.”
The old men became engrossed in their game and Eve could feel her sisters’ excited gazes on her as well as her Dad’s.
“Big Sis, are you expecting a baby?”
“Really, are you pregnant!?”
“No girls.” Eve looked at her father. “Not yet.”
“What are you waiting for?” Her father said. “It has been several months now, Evelyn. Do you want us to die of expectations? Let me tell you, your mother got pregnant a week after we married, and we had you exactly nine months after.”
“Unfortunately, you got swapped with that girl,” her grandfather grumbled. “I still blame myself to this day for not noticing early.”
“No one can tell you apart from your mother when she was your age, Evelyn. And seeing you now reminds me of the first time Selina and I met each other.” Her father laughed and touched his wife’s hand. “Right, Selina?”
Eve’s mother who had been quiet all this time looked up from her phone. Her dazed look swept across the table and she stood up.
“Excuse me, please. Cassie, Carla, accompany me to the washroom.”
Eve’s eyes followed her back as she walked away with the girls. Her father sighed heavily and her grandfather shook her head.
“Tsk tsk tsk, women are so complicated,” her grandfather grumbled.
“Then that means you’re acting like a woman.” Ethan’s grandfather was so focused on the game. “Why do you keep cheating, Old Man?”
Eve’s eyes only left her mother’s back when she disappeared behind a wall with the girls. She breathed out a soft sigh and looked down.
As she hadn’t been treated well by Mia’s parents while growing up in the province, imagine her happiness when she found out that she had a different family. Well, her whole family welcomed her with open arms when she was brought to the city, except… Her mother.
Just a week after she was brought here, she had wondered why her mother stayed all day in her room. And when she went in to confirm for herself, she was chased out with a slap.
That was the only time her mother had hit her. Nevertheless, her relationship with her was a cold one. She gave her gifts on her birthday and even transferred ten percent of her shares in her father’s company to her after her wedding, but that was all.
“Eve.” Ethan touched her hand and she looked up. And suddenly, a slow melody began playing in the hall.
“Let’s dance.” Ethan pulled her up and she nodded slowly.
“Are you sure you can dance, Ethan?” She smiled. “My feet are too precious for you to trip on.”
“Are you underestimating me?” They walked to the middle of the room. Some couples had started dancing while most people still chatted around.
Eve opened her mouth and was about to answer, but her eyes caught a slender figure approaching them from the entrance.
“Mr. Anderson.” Jessie stopped in front of them, dressed in a lacey dress. “I hope you’re having a great evening, Mrs. Anderson.” She glanced at Eve and smiled sweetly.
“By the way, Mr. Anderson, haven’t you always wanted to meet Mr. Stone? He is standing right there. I think this is the perfect time to strike up a collaboration.” She pointed to an old man who was conversing with some people in a corner of the room.
“That’s right.” Ethan nodded and left Eve’s side. “I’ll be back, Eve.”
Eve wanted to call out to him and Jessie chuckled and folded her hands. “Well done, Mrs. Anderson. But I forgot to tell you that I never give up on my quest.” She flipped her hair and turned around, following behind Ethan.
Eve clenched her hands and groaned inside. If she pulled that girl’s hair out, she wouldn’t be committing a crime, right?
She stood alone in the middle of the hall, then suddenly, Matt walked past her.
“Hey, Matt. Let’s dance.” Eve pulled him back and held his arms.
“You must be out of your mind, Evelyn. This Young Master doesn’t dance with lousy girls. Ah! Leave me alone!”
As Matt struggled to free himself, a commotion came from the entrance, pulling their attention.
A bunch of policemen flooded into the room. And leading them was none other than Cole. “Arrest her.”
He pointed straight at Eve and her eyes widened.
