The President's Daring Wife
Chapter 47: I Feel Cheated
Chapter 49
“Madam.”
“Madam.”
“Madam, what are you doing?”
Eve snapped back to her senses and looked away from the mirror. She had been deeply engrossed in decorating her face that she didn’t notice the maid’s presence.
“Hey, Camila. Do I look good?”
“You look great, Madam.” The maid had on a small frown. “Are you going somewhere?”
“Yep.” Eve rose to her feet and picked her bag up from the vanity table. “I’m resuming work today. Is the breakfast ready?”
“Yes, the breakfast is ready.” The maid nodded. “But you aren’t well enough, Madam. Are you sure you can go to work in this condition?”
“Why not?” Eve dropped both hands on her waist and twirled around. “Don’t I look as fit as a fiddle? It has been almost a week now. If I didn’t recover, wouldn’t you question my resilience?”
Besides, Ethan hadn’t been home for three days now. He spent the night at his company with the excuse that an important project was going on which needed his strict supervision.
Eve would be expecting him to return the next day, but his alert messages always came in to dampen her hope.
That heartless man never even asked for her permission. He just kept sending her money for breaking the rules.
“You are very strong, Madam. But I hope you won’t tire yourself out. The doctor said you should take proper rest before you begin any strenuous tasks.”
Eve left the bedroom with the maid and headed downstairs for breakfast. While at the dining table, she brought out her phone and blew out a sigh, staring down at it.
Ethan did not even call her. At least, he should call to inquire about her health.
“Madam, your health is fragile. You have to be careful.” Elena came out of the kitchen area and dropped Eve’s orange juice. “Camila told me you’re adamant to resume work.”
“Of course, I am, Elena.” Eve dropped her phone and picked at her food. “Without Ethan around, the house feels like a cage. Do you know how much I struggle to sleep at night?”
“That’s a good thing, Madam. I like that you’re transparent. I knew you wouldn’t stay mad at the Young Master for long.”
Eve pursed her lips. Even if she stayed mad at that man, she’d be growing white hairs before he apologized for what he did. And that would be wasting her time.
“Madam.” Elena patted her shoulders. “I know the Young Master is hard on you, but he has not always been this way. His grandfather told me that. Just give him more time, okay?”
Eve nodded and drank her orange juice. She bid Elena goodbye and asked the security to drive her to Ethan’s company since she could no longer take a taxi.
On arriving at the company, Eve stepped out of the car and adjusted her skirt as well as her blouse, making sure it was well tucked in. Then she brought out her glasses from her bag and wore it.
“Wow, Mrs. Anderson, it’s been so long since you’re here.”
“It feels like ages since I saw you last, Mrs. Anderson.”
“I love the new look, Mrs. Anderson.”
“Suddenly, the company is illuminated once again.”
Eve waved at and greeted the receptionists as she made her way into the elevator. She brought out her makeup palette while inside the elevator and checked herself out in the mirror.
The heavy makeup was just to cover the lingering traces of her recent illness. If she’d come with little or no makeup, the employees definitely would have fled on sighting her, mistaking her for a ghost.
She picked up her lipstick and rubbed some on her lips. And while retouching her face with the powder, the elevator halted all of a sudden and someone stepped inside.
The first thing that came to Eve’s view was high-heeled shoes. Her eyes traveled up the lady’s legs to her face and her expression changed.
“What an unpleasant surprise, Mrs. Anderson.” Jessie sauntered forward and the elevator continued moving up after the doors closed.
“An unpleasant surprise, indeed.” Eve focused on decorating her face. “Are you now obsessed with me, Jessica? Is that why you followed me?”
“Obsessed with you?” Jessie scoffed. “There’s only one person I’m obsessed with in this whole universe. And you know who that person is, Mrs. Anderson.”
Eve rubbed more lipstick and smacked her lips. “What’s that smell?” She frowned and wrinkled her nose. “The smell of desperation– yuck! It smells like rotten eggs.”
She dropped the makeup pallet into her bag and brought out a perfume then spray it.
“Now, this is better.” Eve dropped the perfume and smiled sweetly.
“Are you done?” Jessie’s expression darkened.
“No. Do you want more perfume? I’m sure it will help ward off your obsessive thoughts.”
“Obsession?” Jessie snickered. “You think I’m obsessed with your husband, Mrs. Anderson? Well, you’re correct. And very soon, the president will be mine. You know why?” Her lips curled into a wide smile. “While you were absent, I’ve been taking great care of your husband.”
Eve dropped her folded hands and frowned.
“Don’t tell me you wriggled your way back into being his secretary. I expected more from you, Jessica. Stooping this low makes you look stupid among all the women in the world.”
“What if I stoop low.” Jessie patted the large box in her hands. “It is all for fighting for the man I love. I told you, Mrs. Anderson, not only you can bite. And don’t worry, I won’t go back to being Mr. Anderson’s secretary, because I just got a better place in his life.”
Eve’s eyes followed the girl’s and they fell on the large box.
“You’re curious, right?” Jessie chuckled. “Wait until Mr. Anderson wears this, and let’s conclude who knows him better amongst us. You see, even though Mr. Anderson and I are no longer in the same office, he still runs to me for all of the important things he needs. Including what to wear.”
“You’re so pitiful, Jessica.” Eve forced a smile, controlling her fists from flying. “You think this as a favor, but I think it’s exploitation. But you’re so stupid you won’t get it. Mr. Anderson no longer needs you as his secretary, but he still sends you on such errands. Tsk tsk tsk.” Eve shook her head and sighed. “You’re a disgrace to women, Jessica. Do you even have a hint of pride?”
“Yes, when it comes to your husband, I agree I don’t have any pride. Don’t tell me you’re jealous and mad, Mrs. Anderson. You can go to your husband and throw up tantrums, and that will be lowering yourself. I can’t wait for that to happen.”
“You’re not worthy of any of my emotions, especially jealousy. I still have a say in firing you from this company, Jessica. I’m just holding back because I have no time for your kind.”
The elevator came to a stop and Eve snatched the large box from her hands.
“And if I can reign in my husband, then no other woman is a threat to me. Now, while I’m being nice, kindly turn around and go back to where you’re supposed to be.”
Eve left the elevator with the large box, and the doors closed on Jessica whose eyes were red with anger.
She answered the employees’ greetings while making her way straight to the president’s office. And on entering, she met Ethan coming out of his private suite.
“Argh! I feel cheated!”
