Chapter 48: The President Won’t Suspect A Thing

Eve dropped the large box on the couch and sank down beside it.

“Eve.” Ethan looked surprised for a few seconds before he retained his nonchalant look. “What are you doing here? Aren’t you supposed to be recovering?”

“I should stay back home so you can goof around, right?” Eve folded her hands and stood up. “Ethan, are you a child to not buy your own clothes?”

Ethan sat on the couch and unwrapped the box, revealing a business suit. “You got it from Jessie?”

“It is Jessica!”

“Eve.” Ethan looked up. “Are you here for trouble?”

Eve sighed and sat beside him. “Of course not,” she grumbled. “I’m here because I’ve resumed work. Ethan, you could at least call me and ask about my health.”

Ethan scrutinized the suit and picked it up. “Take this to the thrash.” He nudged the box towards her before standing up and disappearing into his private suite.

Eve’s eyes left his back and she grumbled some words before picking up the box. She walked out of the office and disposed of it in the trash, and on coming back, Ethan was still inside the suite so she followed him inside.

“Ethan.” Eve sat on the bed and watched him as he dressed. “Why would you spend the night here? This bed is hard and stiff, don’t you feel uncomfortable?”

Although the private suite looked big, it wasn’t as big as their bedroom back at the Villa.

“I can’t believe that when all the employees leave, you sleep alone in this vast company. Aren’t you afraid that something might catch you in the middle of the night?”

Ethan stared at her as if she was crazy. “I’m not alone. The securities are just on the bottom floor.”

“That’s it.” Eve stood up and helped him wear his jacket. “The securities are patrolling down at the bottom floor, while you’re up here sleeping alone. Do you have a heart of stone or what? Don’t you know that something might happen to you without anyone around to help you? Ethan, have you lost your fear instincts?”

“Stop nagging. It isn’t like I’m afraid of anything.”

“You aren’t afraid of anything?” Eve shook her head and came forward to help him wear his necktie. “That’s a lie, Ethan. There must be something you’re afraid of. And I know what it is.”

“Really?” Ethan frowned and she nodded.

“What is it?” He asked.

Eve chortled. Her palms traveled up his chest and stopped at his collar. And she carefully flattened them in place. “I know you’re afraid of losing me, Honey.” She stood on her toes and wrapped her arms around his neck. “Aren’t I right?”

“Not close.” Ethan nudged her aside and faced the mirror, while she landed on the bed.

“Not close?” Eve tapped her chin, frowning. “You really aren’t afraid of losing me, Ethan?” She looked up and gasped.

Ethan picked a cufflink from its box on the vanity table and wore it on the edge of his sleeves.

And Eve sank into deep thought. If she could recall correctly, Ethan risked everything to save her in her past life.

He even went against his grandfather’s will by wanting to reunite with her after the divorce.

“Ethan.” Eve stood up and her fingers trailed up his arm. “Are you sure you’re not afraid of losing me? I might just disappear one day and you won’t see me again.”

Ethan paused and stared at her through the mirror, while she smiled sweetly at him.

“Unless you turn into a spirit, let’s see how you’re going to disappear, Evelyn.”

Eve shuddered at his tone. ‘Urgh’ was he angry?

“Then maybe I should turn into a spirit.” She tugged at his arm, laughing softly. “I will turn into a spirit and disappear, Honey. And let’s how you’re going to react. Didn’t you say you’re not afraid of losing me?”

“Shut up!”

Maybe he was just trying to concentrate, or maybe her words were doing something to him, but Eve didn’t want to stop. She had to get a reaction from this stoic man.

“I swear I’ll disappear, Ethan. Oh my goodness, my body is light. I can feel myself floating. Ah! Ethan, help.”

Ethan moved his hand to nudge her aside but Eve held on tightly to his arm.

“Ethan, help me. I’m flying– Ah!”

Ethan suddenly pinned her to the bed and Eve’s eyes widened, her heart thumping hard.

“I said shut up! Evelyn! Won’t you heed a simple command!?”

Eve pressed her lips together, her heart threatening to fly out. Damnit! Had she ticked off the bomb?

But the massacre she waited for never came. After taking in deep breaths as if controlling his anger, Ethan simply left her on the bed and went back to face the mirror.

Eve gulped and stood up, her limbs trembling. “E–Ethan, please tell me if you’re a psycho, so I can be well prepared for things like this.”

“Get out,” Ethan said calmly.

“You almost gave me a heart attack.” Eve patted her chest. “I’d be damned if I stay here a second longer.” She fled out of the private suite and staggered onto the couch in the office.

Ethan came out moments later, fully dressed and looking… Handsome? Eve shuddered and looked away.

Despite his heavenly looks, hiding inside the deadly-gorgeous body was a raging beast that could bring massacre to the earth.

How could he say he wasn’t afraid of losing her? She’d caught him sneaking glances at her the night her grandfather introduced her to the social circle a few days after she was brought here to the city.

Only his looks that stood out among the crowd had caught Eve’s attention. Even so, she didn’t give him a second glance because his appearance screamed of arrogance. At that time, she was also all over Cole.

Then occasionally, they’d meet at parties set up in the social circle, but no words were exchanged. They were complete strangers. Imagine her shock when her grandfather told her that she would marry him immediately after she graduated college.

“Evelyn!”

Eve broke out of her reverie at Ethan’s loud voice.

“What are you thinking about? I’ve been calling you since, do you have ear defects?”

Eve left the couch and went to his desk. “You could have just stopped at the first question, you know. What is it?”

“Take this to the innovation department.” Ethan pushed a document to her. “Find the manager. The signature is not right.”

Eve picked up the bulky document and sighed. “By the way.” She halted after turning around. “Why are you dressed in a dashing tuxedo? And don’t you have your suits here in the private suite?”

“I have a business date later. Now go, Eve. Stop wasting time.”

Eve trudged out of his office and headed into the elevator. The innovation department should be on the tenth floor if she wasn’t mistaken.

The elevator took her down and she made her way to the Manager’s office, after asking some employees for directions.

Eve lifted her hand to knock at the door, but loud voices from inside made her stop.

“The president won’t suspect a thing, just change the stupid specifications!”
