Chapter 49: Call Me Mira

“But if I put it here, it will look made up. How about we draw up another draft?”

“No, we don’t have time for that. Just do it like that. We’ve done this many times and he didn’t suspect a thing.”

Eve pushed the door open and the voices stopped.

In the room, two middle-aged men sat across each other in front of a desk. While at the swivel chair behind the desk sat a lady who seemed to be in her forties.

“Who are you? Don’t you know how to knock!?” One of the middle-aged men hollered.

“What do you want, Young Lady?” The woman asked. “Why did you barge into my office without requesting permission?”

“I am looking for the manager.” Eve’s eyes swept across the three people.

“I am the manager,” the woman answered. “What brought you here?”

“Why are you asking her that!?” The first man slapped the desk. “She should be explaining herself for walking in on us without permission. Amanda, is this how you handle your employees here?”

“Unless she is new, I don’t recognize her as one of my employees.” The woman called Amanda sized Eve up. “To put it simply, I’ve never seen her around here.”

“Is that so?” The other middle-aged man said and Amanda nodded.

“Now, Young Lady. Say why you’re here and stop wasting our time,” she narrowed her eyes at Eve and said.

Eve studied their expressions. While the middle-aged men appeared anxious, this lady Amanda looked all calm.

“I am from the president’s office,” she said and extended the document. “He said I should bring this to you. The signature is not right.”

“The president’s office!?”

“The president’s office!?”

The two men shot to their feet, their eyes widening. And a big frown formed on Amanda’s face.

“Y–You, are you really from the president’s office?” The first man pointed a trembling finger at her.

“She must be joking. I’ve never seen her face before,” said the second man.

“Rumor has it that the president has changed his secretary.” Amanda also stood up and asked, “Are you perhaps his new secretary?”

“Why are you asking her that, Amanda? Isn’t it obvious?”

“If she’s from the president’s office, then she must be his new secretary.”

Amanda took the document from Eve’s hands before sitting down. “How much of our conversation did you hear, Young Lady?”

“I can swear she heard it all,” One of the men said.

“Didn’t you notice the look on her face when she walked in?” The other man added.

“Calm down, guys.” Amanda glanced at the men before looking toward Eve. “I want answers from this Young Lady.”

Eve sighed and dropped her hands. “They’re right. I heard everything.”

“This is bad!” Exclaimed the first man.

“If she tells the president–”

“She’s not going to tell the president.” Amanda held up her hand, halting the men. “Young Lady.” She rose to her feet and sauntered toward Eve, smiling. “You aren’t gonna breathe one word to the president, right?”

“Why did you ask her that question, Amanda? Isn’t it like wasting your time?”

“Let’s quickly find a way to make sure she doesn’t open her mouth. I don’t trust anyone around the president. Remember how that Jessie wouldn’t cooperate with us.”

“But this Young Lady looks more innocent and nice than Jessie,” Amanda placed a hand on Eve’s shoulder and said softly. “Jessie is so full of herself, she didn’t care about the benefits she’d get if she cooperated with us. I know not everyone is a fool like her. And besides, this Young Lady is new.”

“You’re right.” One of the middle-aged said, his expression brightening. “If you keep your mouth shut, little girl, we’ll make sure you thrive well in this company.”

“Pretend you didn’t hear anything and quietly walk back to the president’s office. We can keep in touch later, and we’ll make sure you receive a good reward.” The other man added.

“So, what do you say, Young Lady?” Amanda lowered her voice. “Are you willing to keep this a secret? It is also for your own good.”

Eve rolled her eyes then folded her hands. She walked past Amanda and sat down on an empty chair beside a water dispenser.

“Do you think I’m a fool or what?” She flung one leg atop the other. “You guys seem to be high officials in this company, right?”

“Are you trying to insult us, Young Lady?”

“Yes, we are high officials. And that means you don’t dare trifle with us.”

“Relax.” Eve held out one hand and smiled. “As you’re high officials, why would I think of offending you?”

The men’s expressions relaxed and Amanda squinted her eyes.

“But you’re wrong in only asking me to keep your words a secret.” Eve went on. “Gentlemen, I am sure these words are part of a bigger secret.”

The men exchanged cautious glances and Amanda walked forward.

“What are you trying to imply, Young Lady?”

“I’m not a dumb person.” Eve stared up at her. “In big companies like this one, surely, there must be secrets and conspiracies.”

The men scrambled forward and stood beside Amanda. “Young Lady–”

“So it is normal.” Eve stood up and dusted her hands, smiling. “And you can’t ask me to keep your words a secret while you have other things you’re hiding. It is like keeping me in the dark which is not fair.”

“What do you want us to give you?”

“I know you’re deriving a lot of benefit from whatever you’re doing, Guys. Aren’t you gonna cut some slack for this Young Lady?”

“Go to the point,” Amanda said.

“I’d like to receive the same kind of benefits. You’re right, I’m not like Jessie. And as the president’s secretary, you’re going to find me very useful.”

Amanda’s expression changed and the men opened their mouths.

“I think what this Young Lady is trying to insinuate is…”

“I think she wants to join us! Can we trust her, Amanda?”

“This is a very serious thing, Young Lady.” Amanda folded her hands. “We are going to find you very useful, surely. But how can we be sure that you’re legit?”

“First of all, I’m not only satisfied with being the president’s secretary. I wish to make more money, even more than the president. And I hope there’s a shortcut way I can achieve that.”

“You have great ambitions, Young Lady.”

“I admire that.”

The men chuckled and shook their heads.

“That’s it, Amanda. Let’s take her in.”

“Now that the president’s secretary is with us, things are going to be a lot easier.”

“Wait a minute.” Amanda shut the men and walked close to Eve. “Rumor has it that the president’s wife is his new secretary.”

“Oh, that.” Eve waved her hand. “That’s not true. The president’s wife only frequents this company. I heard that she’s a full-time housewife.”

“Young Lady.” Amanda smiled. “You’re not the only ambitious employee in this company. And now that you’ve decided to join us, we won’t be formal with each other.”

“In fact, take this.” One of the men shoved a hand into his pocket and brought out a card. “Every detail you will need is on this. This is your membership card. And if you have any news, don’t hesitate to let me know.”

He brought out a second card and handed both to her.

“Welcome to the club, Young Lady.” Amanda went to her desk and returned with the document. “There is no fault with the signature, I intentionally made it so. Now, your first job is to convince the president to accept it.”

“I won’t let you down.” Eve smiled and took the document.

She pushed the cards into her skirt’s pocket and made her way to the door.

“By the way, what is your name, Young Lady?” One of the men’s voices halted her.

“Call me Mira.” Eve glanced over her shoulder.

“Mira? As in Miranda? Mirabelle?”

“No, just Mira.”
