Chapter 53: Her Assignment

Eve let out a gasp before quickly turning around. She used her bag to cover the side of her face, then she ran off in the opposite direction.

After walking around the huge skyscraper, she finally located the Cafe and her heartbeat eased down.

“You are late, Mira. What took you so long?” One of the middle-aged men at Amanda’s office approached her.

The whole cafe was vacant. Only a handful of employees were present. They were not even more than twenty.

“I’m so sorry, Mr. Clinton.” She smiled and wore her bag properly. “I had to squeeze out of the president’s tight schedule. You know what a workaholic he is.”

“Make sure this never happens again.” Mr. Clinton warned. “We are always cautious, no one knows we meet up here. So you must make it seem like you don’t like the food in the company’s cafeteria and prefer lunch in outside restaurants.”

“Got it, Mr. Clinton. I’ll take note of that.”

Employees, both male and female, old and young, sat at the tables spread across the wide cafe.

“Are these all the members of this club?” Eve brought her attention back to Mr. Clinton and asked.

“Of course, not. Most have left,” the man replied.

“Mira.” Amanda walked forward. “We were supposed to introduce you today, but it’s no longer possible since not everyone is present.”

“Oh, it’s alright.” Eve waved her hand. “You can introduce us some other time.”

“And even though we haven’t introduced you yet, that won’t stop us from giving you your assignment,” Amanda continued.

“That’s right, Amanda.” Mr. Clinton and Mr. Alan nodded.

“We must start acting while the iron is hot. She is the president’s secretary, she must utilize her resources and make our work easier.”

“You’re correct.” Amanda smiled at Eve. “But first of all, Guys. Let’s give her a round of applause. Even though she is new, know that, except for the managers, her position is above everyone else’s. So you must treat her with respect.”

The people clapped and Eve waved her hand, smiling.

“Come on, cut out the formalities, Guys. We are in this business together. And as members of the Ambitious Employees Club, we must stick with each other like brothers and sisters.”

“Cheers!” The others chorused and clapped loudly.

“As for your assignment, Mira.” Amanda held out her hand and one of the younger employees scurried forward and placed a document on it. “Make sure you sneak this into the president’s important files.”

“What’s this for?” Eve took the document from her, frowning.

Amanda and the two middle-aged men exchanged glances, as well as the other employees.

“I thought we agreed on not keeping me in the dark, the sole purpose of me joining this club. If I don’t know what it is, how do I know how to handle it?” Eve folded her hands and put on an offended look.

“You see, Mira. You’re still new.”

“But you just gave me recognition right now.”

“You’re right.” Amanda stepped close to her and looked into her eyes. “This document is very important, Mira.”

“The thing is, every manager in this company has at least one percent share. And among all the managers, sixty percent are with us,” Mr. Clinton added.

“So every year, we make sure the company’s profits are doubled or tripled,” said Mr. Alan. “But we take a fake report to the president. We make it seem as if the profits only increased by fifty percent, which is a fair price.”

They all laughed at the same time and Eve’s brows furrowed.

“What do you mean by that, Mr. Alan?”

“What he means is.” Mr. Clinton went on. “We make the president believe that the company’s profit has increased only by fifty percent, while the remaining profit comes to us, the Ambitious Employees. That is where our extra income comes from.”

“And can you believe what we made last year, Mira?” Mr. Alan’s eyes shone brightly.

Eve shook her head and looked toward Amanda.

“We made thirty billion, Mira. That is a lot of money, and the president didn’t suspect a thing.” Amanda smiled. “So imagine what we’re going to make this year with your help.”

“Yes, with your help, we can make even more.” Mr. Clinton stared at her greedily while the other employees nodded in agreement.

“Because we had to pull some strings in the past and even find ways to trick that Jessie, we suffered a lot, Mira.”

“But now that you’re here, we won’t need to worry about it anymore. This document was supposed to pass through the finance department first. But if it goes directly to the president’s office, he won’t suspect a thing. He will put in his signature just like before.”

“And more money will fall like rain.”

Eve held on tight to the document as the employees laughed and clapped again.

“You’re so brilliant, Guys!” She widened her eyes and laughed. “I guess I’ll have to learn so much from you. Thank Goodness, I didn’t waste more time idling away in the president’s office before getting to meet you.”

“Yes, Mira. You have a lot to learn. The heavens are with you, that is why you found us early.”

“I’m so so honored, Mr. Clinton, Mr. Alan, and Amanda.” Eve looked across the three people, placing a hand on her chest. “If I make a lot of money very soon, I’ll never forget you guys.”

“You’re so sweet, Mira. Now, go go go. You have a mission to achieve.”

They all dispersed from the cafe, and each employee took a different route. Some returned to the company in their cars or motorbikes, while Eve took a different direction from the one she’d taken before, following Amanda’s advice.

“Phew.” Eve wiped off her sweat as she stood inside the elevator. She also avoided the receptionists who would jump and scream at the sight of her.

“Hey, Mimi.”

“You look so glamorous today.”

“Anything for the girls?”

Eve stopped at the employees’ area after leaving the elevator.

“Is the president around?” She stopped walking and asked.

“No. The president went out hours ago,” one of the employees answered. “You’re so favored by the president, Mimi. You even come to work and leave whenever you want.”

“Why won’t she?” Another employee giggled. “After all, she’s the president’s wife.”

“Shush, guys.” Eve placed a finger on her lips, gesturing to them to keep quiet. “Can you please stop referring to me as the president’s wife or treating me like that? Haven’t I told you guys we’re all colleagues?”

“You’re so kind and beautiful, Mimi.”

“You also have a heart of gold.”

“Awwn, girls. I’m so flattered.” Eve smiled sweetly.

“By the way, I’ve brought the shoes. Would you like to try it on?”

“I’d love to, but that will be later. Let me get some rest, girls.” Eve walked away and the employees waved her goodbye.

She pushed the glass door to Ethan’s office open and peeked inside. Empty. Great!

Walking in, her gaze strayed to the working desk where some documents were neatly piled on. She took in a deep breath and her fingers curled around the document.
