The President's Daring Wife
Chapter 54: Meeting With A Client
Chapter 56
Eve stepped toward the desk and walked past the pile of documents. She stopped by the floor-to-ceiling glass window and looked out of it before tossing the document out.
After dusting her hands, she returned to the couch and lay down on it, breathing out a sigh.
Her eye lingered on the ceiling for a while and slowly, her vision turned blurry.
Eve covered her mouth to hold back a yawn when footsteps approached the door followed by a slight knock. And moments later, the door was pushed open from the outside and a female employee stepped in.
“Ehm, Mrs. Anderson– I mean, Mimi.” She stopped in front of Eve and hesitated. “I got a promotion last week and the others promised to throw a party for me after work today.”
“A promotion!?” Eve sat up and exclaimed. “Wow, congratulations, Anna. I’m so happy to hear that.”
“Thank you.” The employee smiled. “I– I wonder if you would like to come to the party with us. Everyone will be there.”
“Really?” Eve’s brows furrowed.
“Please don’t say no.” The employee gave her an eager look. “You’re so nice, and you told us we shouldn’t treat you differently. I’ll feel guilty if you don’t join in the celebration with us.”
“Mrs. Anderson– I mean, Mimi. The president seems to pamper you a lot, I’m sure he won’t mind. We’ll hold the party after work anyways, I just want us to have a great time together as colleagues.”
“Don’t worry, Anna. I’ll be there.” Eve smiled at the girl.
Ethan pampered her a lot? That man was always cruel to her. But he wouldn’t stop her from celebrating with the employees, right?
After all, she was a free bird.
“Thank you. Thank you. Thank you so much, Mimi. We’ll get you when work is over.” The girl giggled and skipped out of the office.
Eve rested her back on the couch, her mind wandering to that document. Then all of a sudden, her phone rang and she reached for it in her bag.
“Hey, Grandpa! How have you been?”
“Evelyn, you silly girl.” Her grandfather sounded mad. “When will you ever think of visiting this old man? Don’t you know how much we miss you? Tell me, is that boy stopping you from coming to see us?”
“Grandpa, no! Not at all.” Eve quickly shook her head. “Ethan is treating me so well, sometimes I forget my own family. So don’t blame him, Grandpa.”
“You appear to be living in bliss there, Evelyn.”
“You’re right, Grandpa. My every day is filled with nothing but happiness. Ethan treats me like a delicate egg.” Eve scratched the back of her neck and laughed.
“That’s good to know. Forget about this Old Man. As long as you’re happy, things will be well.” Her Grandfather chuckled. “But don’t forget about your family. You must visit us soon.”
“Alright, Grandpa. I promise to see you soon. I also miss you anyways.”
After hanging up, the urge to sleep was no longer in Eve’s eyes. And she stood up and paced in the office for a while.
She walked to Ethan’s desk and spent a long time checking out the documents on it, both the ones that he signed and the ones that he hadn’t signed yet.
Eve shook her head and sighed. Her eyes will dart to the door now and then at every slight sound.
Hours passed by, it was turning dark.
Eve sat on the couch, eating the food she’d just ordered from the company’s cafeteria when the employee from before knocked on the door and came inside.
“We’re about to go, Mimi. Are you ready?”
“Is it time already?” Eve drank her orange juice and wiped her mouth.
“Yeah, it is time. We have already closed,” the girl answered and pulled her up. “Let’s hurry, others are waiting for us outside.”
Eve carried her bag and stared at her wristwatch. ‘Urgh.’ that Ethan. Where in the world did he go to? It wasn’t another business date, right?
The employee wouldn’t let go of her hand. The girl was hyper-excited. And Eve trotted after her out of the office.
Just as she said, the other employees were waiting for them. They all left the company together and drove down to a bar not far from the company.
“Is that the president’s car?”
“I’m not sure. Maybe the president had a meeting with a client.”
Eve quickly ducked her head as a familiar car drive out of a nearby hotel. The windows were tinted and she couldn’t see the people inside, however, it was the same kind of car she had seen earlier.
The big car they’d taken came to a stop and they all stepped out and walked into the bar.
The place shook with loud music, and under the dim colorful lights, people danced and some sat in front of the counter, calling for the bartender or gulping down drinks.
“Here, Mimi. Our booth is upstairs.” Anna held her hand and led the way.
The other employees had already made their way to the booth, and when Eve and Anna got there, someone popped up a champagne bottle and whistles and laughter rang in the atmosphere.
“We are happy for you, Anna! A very big congratulations on your promotion from typist to content editor!” They all said in unison.
“Awwn, thank you, guys!” Anna giggled. “But I’d also like you to dedicate this celebration to our lovely Lady Boss who is so down to earth.”
“That’s right. You’re like an angel from the sky, Mimi. Since you appeared in the office, the darkness faded and there has been nothing but light.”
“The office was so boring in the past until you appeared.”
“Since you’re the president’s wife, we will take very good care of you. In return, also take care of us.”
“That’s so sweet of you.” Eve held her chest with both hands. “I’m so flattered, Guys.”
“The pleasure is ours. Now, let’s celebrate!”
The employees popped more champagne bottles. There was music and laughter everywhere. Eve felt light-headed as she gulped down several glasses of champagne.
“More!” She yelled to the others and they all screamed in unison.
They were all wasted by the time the party finished. Eve staggered to her feet and she scoured for her handbag.
“Do you need help, Ma’am?” An indistinct voice sounded in her ears.
“Who are you?” Eve rubbed her eyes, then she quickly shook her head. “No, I’ll… manage.” She pushed the staff aside and wobbled toward the door.
She tripped several times as she made her way downstairs. The bar wasn’t so crowded now, and she could make out a door from a corner.
Eve walked in that direction, gripping the railing tight.
She came out into an open space and the cold wind hit her. “C–Cold.” She shuddered and rubbed both palms on her shoulders.
Her eyes wandered around the area. Too many cars. She shook her head to ward off the dizziness, but it increased with each second. Then something began building up in her chest.
Eve covered her mouth and gagged, her eyes darting around for a corner to throw it out. But as she stepped forward, she collided with something hard, and a tall frame came into her vision on lifting her head.
“W–Who are you?” Eve rubbed her eyes, but that figure remained blurry. And without having the resolve to hold it in any longer, she fell forward and threw up.
